As promised, this is an update to my discussion about "Hurricane Sandy",
who by now most people know plenty about. And as I live in NY, I can say
that what is being said is true~it wasas bad as they said it
would be and for some much worse. I was one of the "lucky" ones who
only lost power for a brief time. It was a very long and tense day
mostly waiting and not knowing exactly what we were waiting for.
My friends and I all felt the same uncomfortable feeling so we kept
in touch all day by phone trying to keep each other calm. When the
winds started picking up and the lights kept flickering it was really
unnerving and when the lights finally went out there wasn't much to do,
but wait and wonder what's next. The devastation to Westchester County,
where I live is unbelievable. There are over 125,000 people without
power here alone. I live in Yonkers and we have sporadic outages.
I have power again. I am now concerned about some of my very special
mylotter friends who live in the other states that were affected
by other types of weather like large amounts of snow. (MW-are you ok)?
Unfortunately, they might not even see this discussion for lack of
power. So if you can please let me know that you are your families
are alright! I hope and pray you all are~

The news is on right now and it's showing some of the damage and floods in NYC. Based on these pictures, you are very lucky!
We were all pretty scared too because we kept hearing it would be the worst storm we'd ever seen. They kicked me out of work early on Monday because I'm the only one that doesn't live within 5 minutes of work. The schools let the kids go home at noon.
So we spent all afternoon watching TV and getting updates on how bad things were at the coasts.. especially in NJ and NY.
I kept waiting for it to hit us.
It never really did.
We had some winds. A few trees fell down here and there. But it was nothing like they expected.
We lost power for literally 2 minutes. Some people lost it for longer than that.. but right here where I am, the storm pretty much completely passed us by.

Hi kats~ Glad to hear from you to know that you and your family are all
safe. As I said, I was one of the lucky ones. It was scary. The winds
were loud and strong! My bf went to work by cab because his boss begged
him. He works in a College Cafeteria and the kids on Campus needed to
be fed (he works cleanup, but they needed as many people as they could
get). There has been no bus service since Sunday and most of the workers
take the busses so the ones that got rides stayed overnight. So, I was
alone! The area where the College is got hit really hard and they lost
power and may not get it back for a week or so. Don't know what they're
going to do. The kids that live there are already not happy after 2 days
in the dark! Watching the devastation to NYC and NJ's Shore is just
heartbreaking~I don't even know what else to say.

I feel for those dealing with damage and floods. No power isn't the end of the world, you know. And right now it's not really cold enough for it to be a big deal. It's a good thing this didn't happen in another couple months when it's below zero or something. The biggest problem with dealing with no power is staying fed.
Once in a big ice storm we went 4 days with no power. We got by okay though. We had a gas stove so could still cook. It was freezing outside so we put all of our cold and frozen foods on our back porch or in the garage in a cooler. The in laws brought over a kerosene heater so we could stay warm. All in all it wasn't too bad..
It wouldn't be the same this time. Our stove is now electric, and we don't have any non-electric heaters.. plus it's not cold enough outside to keep the food at a safe temperature.

Opal! I'm so glad to see that you survived this, too!
We didn't do too badly here. Parts of Winchester did flood, lots of trees and power lines down. Our electricity went out a few times but came right back on, fortunately. Our lake flooded but it's better now. We had 3 trees come down and another is still up but leaning against another tree. We'll have to have that one brought down so it won't fall on top of anyone. Lots of tree branches hit the house but that was all. I've been very sick with the worst cold of my life through this so I haven't gone outside yet and can only see as far as the windows allow but I don't think there is any damage to our house.
Believe it or not, we didn't get one snowflake! They initially said we could expect 1 to 2 feet of snow but that ended up happening on the western side of the mountains and we're on the eastern side. It has been steadily raining since the start of this thing and it is occasionally snowing all around us but, so far, no snow. WHEW!
My friend on the eastern shore of Maryland (near Ocean City) said he did all right throughout this mess. He never lost his electricity! He has a brother, though, who lives in New Jersey, just about 1 1/2 blocks from the ocean. His brother told him that they had mandatory evacuations right across the street from him but not on his side of the street but I think that was a lie. His side is closer to the ocean and, from what I've read, he was given a mandatory evacuation but chose to stay because he's a hoarder and has 8 cats and refused to leave. He is without electricity now, though.
I'm SO glad to hear that you didn't get worse than you did! I've been very worried since hearing all the reports of loss of life and all the fires that have destroyed so many houses! My heart goes out to the families of anyone who has lost a loved one and/or property in this devastating storm.

OH MW! I'm soooo glad to hear from you! When I heard that W VA got
3 feet of snow I was really worried about you! I'm glad you were
lucky too! Hope you're feeling better too. It was just a very
long stressful day. Like I said, just the waiting and wondering
was scary. My phone didn't stop ringing because 3 of my gf's
and I were all alone so we kept each other "company". One of
them lives directly across the street, but neither one of
us was afraid to even go out the door because we were warned
not to because of the high winds and flying debris and possible
falling limbs or trees. And another gf lives on the other side
of our complex and it was the same situation. She didn't want
to live her kitten alone or she would have stayed over my
apartment since the bf was staying at his job. The schools
are still closed for the third day, but they are putting the
busses back on the road, at least some of them in Westchester
County where I live.

I'm really surprised Winchester didn't flood more! You guys flood with a light drizzle! No drainage in that city.
Front Royal got it bad with the rain and wind, but other than some power outages, I think everyone was pretty much okay.
I think WV got the brunt of the snow.

When I saw the snow falling on TV (in W VA) I actually felt happy. Not for them, of course, but it didn't look like we would get any here and we didn't. We had enough snow here two years ago to last me a LIFETIME! West Virginia is literally up the road about 6 miles from us but that horrible snow was on the other side of the tallest mountains (farther west) and I could tell we wouldn't get it. I've seen those mountains hold back a lot of snow since we moved here.
As for Winchester flooding, it's a pretty old town (established in 1752, I believe) which means it has very old sewers and drainage systems. Also, it's mainly farmland outside of the city and you'd think more of it would flood. I think there wasn't much flooding here because we really didn't get a lot of rain, at least compared to some. I think we got just under 3" total rainfall. The winds only got up to around 60 mph, I believe. We were very lucky. I just wish this constant rain/drizzle would stop! It's so wet and cold out there and I've got to go pick up my husband from the hospital today. I'm not at all happy about that (for several reasons, lol).
I feel very fortunate that I don't know anyone personally who has suffered a lot of damage from this storm. I feel so badly for those who did.
I saw more flooding way back in 1972 with Hurricane Agnes. I lived in an apartment house (on the third floor, thankfully) and it flooded right outside our door. But, then, that hurricane came right up the Chesapeake Bay and literally made landfall in Baltimore City, where I lived.

Hi Gabs! It is so wonderful to hear from you! I have missed you so!
I am not on FB, so I am trying to check on as many people here as
I can. And I know that so many people are without power so they
can't let us know how they are. I hope that you are well and
please keep in touch. Love you guys too, Les, Star & Luna

Hi AL! I'm fine and thanks~ They are still running nothing but news
on alot of the tv channels and the pictures are horrible. NYC
is still a mess from all the water that they are trying to clean
up. NJ really got hit the hardest. They have help from FEMA and
they are really going to have a difficult time trying to rebuild.
I just feel so sorry for those that lost their homes and more~

Glad to hear all is okay with you. I PM'd you just out of concern but learn here you are fine so that is cool. I am sure you are concerned for your friends and hope you hear something soon. I am in Northwestern US so am lucky. I guess the storm has moved inward last I heard and those folks are getting alot of snow.

Hi celtic~ Yes, I got your PM and so appreciate it. I am having issues
getting onto Mylot's site (not that this is anything new?). My PM's
never worked normally either. I have to try all my browsers to just
get to this discussion! I was extremely lucky as far as the storm
was concerned. It was scary because the winds were stronger than
I've ever heard before. We only lost power for a few hours. At the
time it seemed like forever, especially because I was alone with
my 2 cats since the bf went to work. But, compared to what I saw
afterwards on tv I was beyond thankful! Thank you so much for
being so concerned~ Leslie

We are in Ohio and all is well here. Some heavy wind and rain and about 2 inches of snow is what we ended up with. Glad you are ok. I am so glad I was not there. I hope that everyone can get on their feet soon and work towards cleaning and rebuilding soon. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them.

Hi Thoroughrob~ Glad you and your family are all well. It is extremely
sad to see how much devastation this storm has left in it's path. I
am very thankful that I was fortunate, but at the same time feel
so badly for all those that lost so much. The cleanup and rebuilding
will take a very long time and there are parts of NJ and NY that will
never be the same. It is truly heartbreaking.

I'm glad you are okay. It's unbelievable how many people have lost power. Millions, and I wonder how long it will take to fix it all. I feel so badly for people who work for hourly wages. They are going to have a heck of a time trying to make ends meet. Of course disaster aid should be available. But it certainly won't make up for all the trauma.

Hi lil' sis~ It is really sad the devastation that Hurricane Sandy
has caused. And yes, many people have lost days of work because
there has been closed offices, no transportation, lack of power.
It is going to take weeks, months or longer to try to put things
back together. The Government has stepped in to try and help
things along, but it is still going to be difficult.

I'm in New England and survived it without problem. It was pretty intense for a while and as you said, part of what made it particularly nerve wracking was in the not-knowing. Some parts of town did get flooded and my daughter lost power and came and stayed with me for a while. I'm glad you are alright and I hope everyone else is as well!

Hi bun! I'm fine. I was definitely one of the lucky ones. If
you've seen some of the horrible pictures of NYC itself they
definitely got the serious flooding/water damage. The County
I live in still has 195,000 people without power which is
the worst of it. NJ is the State that really got hit the
hardest since they have alot of areas on the water.

It's great to hear you are ok. I was really worried about everyone in that area. Hurricanes can be especially dangerous if it is an area where they don't normally come. I am glad you were as prepared as you could be. The mountains here got some of the snow. People are ok..they were worried about hikers but I haven't heard that any haven't made it out. A couple of roads closed is the worst here so we are lucky.

Hi Jen! Glad to hear that and your family are alright too! They
are trying to clean up and get power back on those that are still
without it. There are still alot of downed power lines and huge
trees down all over the County so it is making it very difficult
for the cleanup. I am just happy to be safe and all my friends
are alright too!

I'm glad to hear a lot of myLotters came out of this okay. The storm kind of danced around this part of New Brunswick. We ended up with a very ordinary rain storm. The rain wasn't even anything special. Hit my parents area in southern Ontario pretty hard and scared my wife's family in Quebec. We were expecting a huge amount of rain with potential for flooding but the storm is tracking north of us. Didn't even stop me from cycling to work. I am a little worried about cynthiann a mylotter in Jamaica. The storm hit her area and she hasn't commented since last week. I hope everyone is alright.

Hi koopharper! Glad that you were lucky too! My immediate area is
pretty much ok. There is sporadic power outages. One side of the
street has no power (where my bank is)and the houses in back of
it and that is how it is throughout the County. But, there are
a total of over 195,000 people still in the dark, so that isn't
good. As for Cynthiann, I was told that she was ok, although
I'm not sure if she has power yet. She has alot of friends in
this discussion, so maybe someone will give us a further update.

Yes, it has been horrible and hard to believe how many areas are still suffering with issues from this. I do not know anyone in the hardest hit areas, but I have talked with people affected by it, or people in other states who were then hit by the snow because of it. Just glad it was not any worse for most people than what it was.

Hi GG~ I was truly one of the lucky ones, but feel so guilty when
I watch what so many are going through. The emergency services are
all working overtime to get help to those that need it. The Governors
of NY and NJ have enlisted the help of the President and are getting
Federal Emergency Aid to help those that need it. The have crews from
all over the US coming in to help with the cleanup, getting the power
back on, but it is still not going to change the devastation that has
been done. So many people have lost so much that they can't back
and my heart breaks for them~

Thanks for letting us know you survived Sandy.
The storm effect wasn't as bad as predicted here in Hamilton, at least not that I've heard. My power did not go out. I left the gas fireplace going Monday night in case it did (it has an electric starter) and it was so hot in the house when I woke up Tuesday I had the inside front door open most of the day. A lot of small branches down from the maple out front, but nothing bigger than three-quarter-inch diameter.

Hi jill~ Thanks, I'm fine and feel so terrible watching
all the devastation too. Some of it is just so unbelievable.
The Storm destroyed homes, the Boardwalk in Atlantic City,
an Amusement Park in Rye near where I live-just so much
loss. I pray for those that were less fortunate and am
so grateful for my safety.

Thanks for letting us all know you are safe. It must have been one scary time. I live up in the North as well and got no where nears what happened to alot of others who road out the storm. The power outages, fires, and other devastation is tremendous in many areas. I'm wondering about a few of my friends still too. Some of them did respond already on FB but I worry about some others, yet. I pray your friends are all safe and that the unluckier ones can get their loves back together again eventually. It is just unreal how the freak of nature can just wipe things away from you in such a short time.

Hi NailTech! Great to hear from you too and thank you. I'm
not on FB. My friend who lives in Tampa,FL called me today
to see how I was and told me that they were getting some
effects from the storm. He lives near the water so I
guess it's possible. And nature is now more unpredictable
and freakier than ever. We had a "Halloween Snow Storm"
here in NY last year! At this point, I guess nothing
surprises me as to Mother's Nature's Wrath~
