Banana fruit requires no introduction as it is available every where in the World and is one of the most popular and common fruits enjoyed by the people. I am discussing about the health benefits of this fruit through this discussion, which I am sure that members will find interesting and useful. 1. Banana fruit is one of the tropical fruits with good amount of calories in it. 100 gms of this fruit can provide about 90 calories of energy. 2. Banana fruit contains soft pulpy textured flesh which is rich in simple sugars fructose and sucrose and it is easily digested by the body and when consumed it instantly supplies energy to the body and helps in replenish energy. That is why this fruit is a popular food amongst the athletes to get instant energy. 3. This fruit is rich in anti - oxidants, vitamins and minerals which are having beneficial effects on our health. 4. Banana contains about 8.7 mg of Vitamin C in 100 gms. of the flesh. The Vitamin C is very useful to the body as it helps the body to gain resistance against the infectious agents and also helps in scavenging the harmful oxygen free radicals in the body 5. Banana fruit is rich is electrolyte Potassium. 100 gms of banana can provide 358 mg of potassium. Potassium is an important component of cell and other body fluids. This is having very important role in controlling heart rate and blood pressure, countering bad effects of sodium. 6. Banana is very rich is Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine), which is an important B Complex Vitamin and has a beneficial role in treating neuritis and anemia. This Vitamin helps in reducing the homocystine levels in the body, which is one of the factors causing coronary artery disease and also the episodes of stroke. 7. Banana fruit contains about 7% of soluble dietary fiber in it. This is very helpful in having normal bowel movement. Because of this property, Banana is considered as a good food for the persons suffering from constipation. 8. Regular consumption of banana helps in getting adequate levels of trace elements like magnesium, copper and Manganese to the body. 9. Magnesium is essential for strong bones, this is having cardiac protective role in the body. Copper is essential element in red blood cell production and manganese is required by the body as a co factor for the anti oxidant enzyme super oxide dismutase. 10. The oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species [ROS] play a role in aging and various diseases in our body. Banana fruit is having anti- oxidants lutein, zea-xanthin, ß and a-carotenes in small amounts and they act as protective scavengers against the free radicals and ROS. Thus regular consumption of bananas can make you look younger. Hope you liked this discussion! Could you kindly leave your valuable comment and oblige? Thanks!

hi AkRao To add - The peel of the banana is rich in magnesium and phosphorus. that makes it a great choice for Shining White Teeth. You can use the peel and scrub your teen with the inner sides. It can also help in removing stains from the teeth that might have come up due to any food or otherwise. and yes, the banana can cause constipation to some and some like me who have ulcerative colitis should act on consuming them after consulting the doctors. but yes, I still love the banana shakes and even the normal ones.

Hello Dear Sids!! I never had any idea about the usage of the banana peel dear Sids. Thanks a lot that you have given some nice tips. This tip will be definitely useful for the people like me who often get stained teeth because of smoking. I used to use baking soda to get rid of such stains. Having read your tip I will try to use the peel and see the results. I am really thankful to you for giving the first hand information that the people suffering from ulcerative colitis should consult their physicians first before having the bananas. Do they get some irritation or do they suffer from constipation dear Sids? I enjoyed your useful and informative response as ever! Thanks a lot and have a nicetime1 Take care!

That is an interesting and helpful information dear Sids! I think this information will be useful for the people suffering from ulcerative colitis and also from arthritis. So this was your persona experience that you develop constipation with green bananas and not with yellow one! Your experience with apple is also added information for me. I will keep these things in my mind and use this information when ever required.!! People with arthritis should avoid bananas as they’re having cold effect, during the attack. This is very interesting piece of information dear Sids.! I am happy to know that you are using both the fruits to nullify the effect of each fruit and the same time to reap the benefits of both the fruits! Thanks a lot for sharing such a wonderful information dear friend! God bless! Have a nice day!!!!

I can have one smaller size yellow banana a day. Constipative symptoms start when I go for the green ones and the bigger sized ones. Though my doctors did not tell me not to eat bananas on day one, but over time I felt this happening. So in 2006 I had asked them specifically. They said that if the constipation happens, I have to avoid them. (Though off-discussion, red apple to me is laxative and hence I have to avoid that one too many a times, but it is good when I start having some constipation). Then the arthritis happened in 2008. and I guess, banana is to be avoided during an arthritis attack and even after if you have the pain returning back as per my ayurvedic doctors. They said something like the Banana is having a colder effect on the body because of its composition which is scary and problematic for people with arthritis. but still, as I mentioned, I have one banana and an apple almost everyday, I avoid them only during winters (and some continued days of rains) to stay safer from my arthritis pains as I do know that the banana and apple are much better complete fruits than many others.

Our fruit basket will always have bananas stacked up and it has become a habit for us to consume it after every meal and sometimes in between. As you must be knowing the price has sky rocketed. What used to cost around 50 paise just a couple of years ago is now available for not less than three rupees each. Here the bananas are weighed along with the hard wood that goes with it. At one time the price was sixty rupees a kilo. It has now gone down slightly. No matter what, bananas for us is our staple diet.

Thank you for that informative discussion, a wealth of knowledge from the humble banana, I go to the gym and work out 3 times a week and I was also told that I need to eat bananas to replace the potassium that I lose when working out, as well as the health benefits as you have already listed. Fortunately bananas are very cheap especially on the market stalls where we are sometimes at the end of the day you can get a large scoop usually about 15-16 bananas for 50p or 80cents! The only trouble is if you eat too many you spend too many visits on the toilet!

You are most welcome dear Wolfie! Yes, we tend to loose potassium along with many other electrolytes when we undertake some hard physical exercise in the form of sweating. Bananas can be good to replenish the potassium losses and they also give you instant energy to recoup yourself after the heavy physical exercise. Yes humble banana, is a cheap fruit and it is very easily available any where to procure. Looking at the nutritive value of this fruit I think we are getting much more than what we pay for this fruit. Yes, since this fruit as discussed contains crude fiber and is a good laxative in nature can make one o visit the toilet frequently if they are consumed too many at a time! Thanks for sharing your experience dear Wolfie! I sincerely appreciate your participation and for leaving an informative response! Have a nice time!

Banana is a fruit that we eat every day . Bananas contain the complete content of sugar called glucose, sucrose and fructose. Banana calories about 90 calories, is high value for the fruit category. Many athletes make the banana as a favorite fruit. Include of me and all my family. I like bananas very much. Bananas are very well suited for people with hypertension / high blood pressure. Patients with hypertension are encouraged to reduce food high salinity. Bananas are ideal for people with hypertension because bananas are very minimal salt content. Bananas are rich in potassium, high potassium content is also good for people with high blood pressure. The combination of high potassium and low salt makes the linings of fruit are beneficial for people with high blood pressure. From what I have read that competent authority gave permission for the feasibility of food in the United States (FDA) has recognized the benefits of banana fruit producers so as to allow it to claim that the benefits of bananas can lower the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.
