It's a deep topic therefore hard enough to determine without making bogus referrals. It all comes with the kind of risk the sportsman was involved, timeline, tools, competetiveness with the peers among the others. Race car drivers per say we can surely make a statement based on engine and teamwork, besides of the driver being talent enough to take advantage of all that and apply to the unpredictable, which is a race. Senna was natureally born to sit in in a cockpit and plunge it to the limit, so was Shumacher. They are distinct as human beings, diferent cultures per say. Woods is a diferent blurke, he was given a golf club at the age of 2, that's it, plain and simple, so he found entertaining plaing and carried on. Federer conquered the atp tour top ranking and held, I'm mysef a former tennis player, it's easier control a tennisball @ 90 miles per hour than a formula 1 @ 200 miles an hour, see, I'm making a defense toward the racedrivers which might sound arrogant. The truth is, we cannot judge them all in a big enviroment withou sort it out duded tothe circumstances.

I read this after posting mine. I couldn't agree with you more especially about the Senna. It was a humble, gentleman on and off the race track. When we think of the best in any sport we must judge them by their actions on and off the field, track, courts, or whatever. It takes more than just talent to make a great anything.

Hey Mr. Kleber, have to agree with you. Senna was "GOD", I should also confess that I too felt no body else can drive like Senna, he is GOD!

Schumacher is one of the greatest, have you seen him drive his opponents to despair??

When you use the word "sportsman" I can only think of one person Lou Gehrig. He was a gentleman on and off the field. He made America cry when he announced that he had lateral sclerosis (now more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) and that he was leaving baseball for good. I remember the news reels in later years and I cried as well. A movie was made of his life starring Gary Cooper. It's a must for movie goers. To get on with your posting I feel that it is impossible to pick out any one player who is the greatest. Each sport has its own greatest player and to make a list of all the sports and the greatest players would take forever and a day.
New York sportswriter Paul Gallico suggested the team have a recognition day to honor Gehrig on July 4, 1939. There were more than 62,000 fans in attendance as Gehrig stood on the field at Yankee Stadium with the 1927 and 1939 Yankees. He fought back tears of overwhelming emotion and began to speak his immortal words of thanks, calling himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." It was one of the most poignant and emotional moments in the history of American sports, and there was not a dry eye in Yankee Stadium. At the close of Gehrig's speech, Babe Ruth walked up, put his arm around his former teammate and spoke in his ear the first words they had shared since 1934. Quoted from Official Lou Gehrig's site.)
