Pain

Tuesday night I ran off to get a few things at the store and on the way back I was hit by so much pain that I nearly went to the hospital instead of the house.
I figured if I took some pills I'd feel better, but I also knew that if I took them on an empty stomach I'd just be in a different sort of pain.
The roomie asked me what I wanted to do, I just wanted the pain to stop and explained about the pills/food problem.
She said she was going to fix something anyway, so she told me to grab the things she needed and she'd do the rest.
I sat there in the kitchen with her while she fixed food.
After I ate, I took my night pills and waited for them to take affect.
The pills did their job, the pain abated, but I still wasn't feeling too good.
Wednesday Maggie told me to stop putting it off and call the doctor. When I got home I looked up pain doctors, called my G.P.'s office and they said they'd give me a referral - no visit necessary.
I then left a message with the pain doc to set up an appointment, but no call yet today (and since its nearly 5 I don't think its coming.)
Still, I can hope that I can get to see a pain specialist soon and maybe figure out some way to treat this...
Can you guys think of anything else I might do to help with this pain?

It depends on where the pain is as to what might help. For overall body pain the hot tub you have is good, so is a heated mattress pad. Ginger helps with pain as does turmeric, and mega doses of B6. Calcium and magnesium help with muscle pain. Chiropractic, and massage, and pepper based rubs if your skin can tolerate them. Both caffeine and diphenhydramine (benadryl) enhance the effectiveness of pain meds. Myofascial release helps, but many doctors do not think so. I hope you hear from the pain specialist tomorrow.

my upper back and my chest were what were hurting so bad, of course, the neck was involved, but its pretty much always in some pain
it felt like a vise, but I know it isn't the heart - that's like the one organ that actually works right! Okay, most of the rest do pretty good, its everything outside of the organs that don't work right.

Our chiropractor trained Bob to do the myofascial release and trigger points. As I said, some doctors believe it to be a scam, but it works for me. My chiro suspected a torn rotator cuff but I have no insurance or money. He showed Bob what to do to my back, gave me some limits on my weight training and in two weeks the pain was all gone. So, unless you have a roomy who can and will learn to do this your best bet there is massage or chiropractor. Chest pains can be from fatigue and stress, and you never get enough sleep, that would be why I would think the heated mattress pad to sleep on would be good. The herbs and vitamins seem to work for most everything. Good shoe insoles, etc. Lots of people are urging you to get into the doctor, and I know you are trying. Capsaicin in a rub will warm automatically, but you are very fair skinned and I do not know if it would burn you or not. We munch on candied ginger for lots of reasons, pain, upset stomach, and to stop coughs. Oh, Bromelain (pineapple extract) and fish oil are supposed to help as well.

Oh yeah, that capsaicin stuff, one doc recommended it, every where that stuff touched more than burned... but I also got a blister the first time jalapeno juice ever touched my skin... I'm allergic to the stuff!
I'm still sleeping with the a.c. on but maybe when it gets colder I'll look into a heated mattress pad, tho I do have an electric blanket...

What kind of pain is it? or what is it from?. I know it can take awhile to get into specialists. I know here it took me 6 months to get into the hematologists, and another month into the GI. I hope it goes away, and you get in quickly I know what it's like to sit and wait while you suffer.

I live in a big city and docs here tend to leave some slots open in case of emergencies, but I do know about long waits to see them.
If I want to be seen for something small I can generally get into my GP the same or next day, but of a physical it can be months.

Hello Elicbxn. I'm sorry to learn about your pain. Unless you know what is causing the pain you probably should go to the emergency room. Some years ago I had a cyst on an ovary and it doubled me over with the pain. I called my Dr made an appointment the pain left was thinking about canceling the appointment. Kept the appointment and learned I had a cyst the size of a grape fruit. could burst at any moment. So unless you know the cause of your pain go to the emergency room. Not worth taking a chance that it can cause a whole lot of problems.

Since I live with pain on a constant basis and have for years I have several good suggestions that might help without any side affects. First though, I need to ask you a few questions.
Where is the pain located and do you know what causes it? Has this been going on for a long time or is it fairly recent?

The pain in most of my body is old news, feet/neck/chest... but this chest pain was way more than I had ever had and then my back was also hurting.
The closest I can describe is vise like, but also shooting, running up my chest then easing a bit than another pain in another place, like shooting up my back

Sounds very intense. I have three lotions that I mix together for inflammation and pain. They are expensive but I don't have to use them much and when I do, it doesn't take a lot since they are mixed. I use a massage lotion for texture, a hot/cold muscle lotion, and two drops of this stuff called Herbal 35. If one uses Herbal 35 alone, it is usually a drop or two on the fingertips massaged into temples for headaches.

I'm not sure about that. I have you a link to it though.

Not a referral link
It is expensive but it has done me well. Just a drop on your fingertips and then rub it on the temples and the back of your neck. Amazing.

I also suffer from back and neck pain. What helps me is a hot bath. You can also add epsom salt which may make it even more effective. Also hydrating is known to help pain and if you can take an anti inflammatory as well you can reduce any swelling. On top of that I'd also suggest trying heat or ice. Some people prefer one over the other. My lower back pain bothers me the most so I like to ice it at night to help me sleep. I'm sorry I hope you feel better. I know pain specialists are often hard to see right away. The ones I've been to generally make me schedule a month in advance.

Well, as GG already said, it depends on what kind of pain it is, and, as you haven't specified, we can't be of much help.
Hope you feel better soon.

I get weird pain sometimes that I cannot explain. It comes and goes, but sometimes it hurts so bad I just want to cry. I too cannot take pain meds on an empty stomach. It helps with the paid, but like you the side effects are just no fun.
Other than taking some pain pills you might want to get a heating pad and see if that helps. Sometimes a really hot shower helps me. Or a hot bath. Even drinking some hot tea might help. Basically...heat.
I hope you get a call from your pain specialist tomorrow so you can maybe get some relief from your pain.

No call today, darn it - probably waiting for that referral...
I felt so bad I was afraid to go in the hot tub, I was afraid I'd have a muscle spasm and the roomie wouldn't be able to get me out.
Fortunately, after I ate and took my pills the pain abated and hasn't come back nearly as bad so I've been out there last night and tonight. If I could do the computer in the hot tub I'd probably stay out there more!

You mentioned your upper back as painful. Sometimes it takes awhile to get pain under control especially if it is a chronic condition. If I don't take at least two ibuprofen a day my arthritis gets very, very painful and as you probably know, the key to controlling most pain is managing the inflammation. Once the medication is out of your blood stream the joints flare up again and you have to wage the battle anew. Think about that and see if a maintenance regime might help manage your pain.

hi ElicBxn I am so sorry to hear of your pain but really the best thing is to go directly to the ER as it w ill sort out what it is. I know i had this abdominal pain of the left side so okay my GP of course thinks it my diverticulitis and prescribes two antibiotics but the pain was worse next morning and I was broken out.so call t he doctor he says go directly to the RR so the ER doctor comes in looks at the blisters half way around my body. He s miles I have good news and bad news it is not diverticulitis. the bad new "you have shingles"
okay so I was prescribed acyclovir and got it went home and stung all over m y abdomen for the whole summer. what I am getting to is the Er doctor knew what my GP did not. go to the ER my friend I hate to think of you in pain like
that as there has to be a cause. then if need be the pain doctor. sounds serious. so don't be like me and keep putting off things as that tends to make most ailments worse. I will pray its something simple and you will be well
soon,

well, within an hour of eating and taking the pills I felt better, and I knew it wasn't my heart. I suspect I was just having an extra bad round of fibro pain
I've been pretty aggressive with the meds since Tuesday and that has kept the pain at a more manageable level. AND, I'm set to go see the pain specialist on next Tuesday.

The irreligious will laugh or shake their heads, but you & I know prayer works. It's largely how I've maintained my physical & emotional strength through this last year--& you know a bit of what that's been like!
You needn't be around others, & would do much better alone where concentration is vital, in fact. Pray, hun. I'll throw in my own prayers to help a little.
God bless you,
Maggiepie

Better action you have to do is go to hospital as soon as possible. Based my experience is no good to try many medicine that not recommended by doctor. Go to consult with doctor who know better for all about disease. If it going to be late, it can be danger for your body.

Go to bed and let all the kitties pile on and sing (purr) you to sleep. This, of course) is after the pills have taken the edge off the pain.

The best thing you can do is to wait till your doctor calls you. But if you happen to experience it again, I think you need to go to the hospital and have yourself checked right away.
