I always wanted to be a teacher when I was young. But it changed when I was in high school and I took up a major in business. I always tell people that the reason why I don't want to be a teacher anymore is that teacher don't receive high salary. But the truth is, it's more than that. I think I'm not yet ready to be a teacher. Being a teacher is more than standing in front of the students and teaching them how to solve linear equation or the correct form of verb. Aside from being a lecturer, you should also be a role model. Students will forget all the academic lessons that you taught them but they will never forget the lessons that are life related. Since I don't have a lot of experiences in life. I don't think I can be an efficient mentor. I will not also deny that another reason is that I get disappointed with some of my teachers. There are teachers that treat students unfairly. I have a professor in college who only talk nicely to smart students. Whenever those students relates their opinion and academic problems, that professor will listen attentively and try to help them. But one time that I wanted to explain to him what happened in our project, he told me that he doesn't care and that he hope it's not going to happen next time. I never ask for a high grades or for him to be nice to me. I don't even care if he doesn't smile at me as he usually is friendly to the students who do well in his class. Each students perform differently and if a student is getting just an average grade, it doesn't mean that she's not trying her best.I never failed any exam and I pass my projects on time although I only get average grade. But even if I perform bad at his class, a teacher should treat his student equally no matter how the students perform in his class or at least give him some respect. I may not be a good student but I'm not doing stupid things in his class. It's just so unfair. Did you guys ever experience unfair treatments of teacher? By the way, our group failed in the our group project and that professor started praising the student who did well in front of me and started mentioning the students who failed in the project. Although he didn't exactly mention our names, I know that it was us. Why does he have to mention it in fornt of me? The student wasn't even asking about it.

Teachers are human beings who can also make mistake. Yes, it was unfair for your teacher to be favoring a student over you or others. But sometimes, they do this this encourage the students to strive more with their studies. I know that not all of us may take a negative comment lightly. But you should always bear in mind that you come to school to learn. You should not be discouraged with people who might seem to be letting you down. Your future is at stake and not theirs.

I guess I was lucky in some way because I was the pet for most of my teachers and to be honest most of the students were idiots so I wasn't alone that department. Thing is most of the other students thought it was cool to go to jail or get detention and I was always quiet and never caused any trouble.
Here not long ago I was reading an article from a teacher who did an experiment with her class to find out how they learn and then divided them up accordingly. There was a huge improvement in grades due to this.
Too bad after all these years and with all this new knowledge about disabilities many teachers are sill so ignorant about them.

I had a professor back in college that was really unprofessional. She was my teacher in a Filipino subject. Her father was the author of a book she wanted us to use. She even had the nerve to tell us that if we buy her father's book from her, then we'll surely get a very high grade.
But for those who declines, then it's a lower grade.
I declined. I didn't care if I got a lower grade. I lost my respect for her after what she did.

Great post. Thank you for taking the time to really express how you really feel. I read all of it and I understand you. People are born to be teachers but with great perseverance, hard work and passion you can be made to be a teacher too.
As what you've said, aside from the teachers' skill, other factors are necessary like, the attitude, being a role model and the way they individually treat the students. I also agree that students may forget what they've learned but they will never forget the inspiration or bad treatments they've got.
I disliked my elementary teachers before because they also favor the students whose parents give them presents on Christmas or special occassions. My parents are divorced and they only see my mom on graduation day. I excel in class (first honor) and the records show but I don't get special treatment. I don't mind. It never affected me. I don't know why. I didn't actually tell my mom to give something to my teachers.
I disliked my high school teachers because some of them were selling some candies or treats to students. Those who buys a lot is always being called to participate and more like popular because being ask first if there are programs. Well, it never affected me. I don't buy because my mom already packed my lunch and snacks. I also excelled in high school, honorable mention. The records showed. I joined programs and undergo trials if necessary. I was a writer in our school magazine. I am proud that I didn't have to buy those things. I made because of my efforts.
Since I disliked both elementary and high school teachers, I never choose a teacher to be a profession. I did my best to get a medical degree. I didn't mind the professors. I have a strong personality if needed. Good thing I didn't use it. Anyway, I graduated, took the board exam but failed. I persisted. I failed three times.
To make my story short, I searched for another way to work, the first job that accepted me was a teaching job to a caregiver training center. It was a simple subject. My mom suggested I take units of education so I could be appropriate to the job. I did.
And guess what, the path was so easy. I am now an ESL teacher in China. Had been working here for more than six years. Everything is so smooth. I figured out maybe I was really meant to be a teacher but kept on rejecting it. Whatever I saw and disliked about the past I try not to do here in my present profession. It's hard to maintain a good status in life. To be a role model to young people also takes a lot of sacrifices. The salary is also low because I am not a native speaker, but my passion made me stay longer and the empowering the children with good education is rewarding.

Hi friend, sad to hear about this unfair professor. As you mentioned teaching profession is your favorite one but you changed your idea due to this professor. Teaching profession is always a noble one, don't change your attitude for this unfair person, join with this noble job and be a role model to all your students and teachers. Forget about this unfair teacher completely and live as a great role model for other teachers. Don't hate the profession due to this person

If it was not done in a constructive way, then it is unfair for all of you. If the test or projects are subjective in nature. It is most likely that the grading system is based on their personal likes. But, the teachers are not all like this.

Yes you are right Lecturers are unfair to other students .
When i was in college their Dr. In my department he believes in one thing once you perform bad in his course believes that you not good and even when you study hard and make a good grade in his course he will said you copied, but once you perform very well for the first time he takes you as his best students...

Talking about teacher, I have some good and bad experiences about it. When I was at high school I always got the highest score in Math and Physic but then in the final report my score is lower than other student who was a beautiful model, how fair is that? I failed to understand how our appearance can affect the score, we were not in beauty contest.
Another problem with another teacher this time with a female teacher, I had a little quarrel with one her favorite students and she gave me one hell of school life, my score dropped from A to D but lucky the principle notice it and gave me another test which turned out good and I was the one who got perfect score.
But the reason why I don't like to be a teacher is because I don't think I have the talent to teach, I feel that my knowledge is not sufficient and I also worship my own freedom. Teaching job is a difficult task, in here teacher works from 7am to 2pm and the responsibility is really high especially because many people here think that to educate children is only teacher's duty. So when the students misbehave or when they committed crime even outside school hours the first to blame is school and teachers. People here don't understand that education is not only at school but also parents duty at home as well. Education must be in balance between school and at home, parents also need to monitor their children and not just depending on teachers at school.
That's why I would not want to be a teacher, because teacher is always the one to blame for everything.

I agree 100% . teachers are also a big part in how our children turn out as adults. My son has been lucky to have good teacher sin Mexico and now in the usa. Funny thing all his so called good teachers are female not male. i always wanted him to have a male teacher. Not really sure why. But you are right teachers are far much more than 2 plus 2 is 4. great post there. Have a great weekend there.

hi thanks for posting , nice discussion. teachers play very important role in our society. I respect them a lot. not many people take up teaching as profession. I feel now that teachers get paid really well, we must look forward to take up teaching as profession. we must even teach our family and friends to respect our teachers. I see some of my young cousins making fun of teachers at school and coming back home and flaunting about it. its wrong
