It is not easy to manage what is inside a refrigerator.I have lost count of the items that are stored in there. Am I the only one that finds it difficult to remember what needs to be replenished and what gets stored in there for days not knowing it is there? How do you handle your refrigerator? Some tips could help.

Yes, i agree, its not actually easily to manage all items inside the refrigerator as keep dumping things and even don't throw things as and when required.
MY TIPS
No left over food inside the fridge as its normal practice in our house no one like to have it onces it goes to fridge, so after 3-4 days, it goes in bin. (very sad but unavoidable)
The problem is the gravy's the taste changes completely especially with tomato or onion gravy, i some time if required keep that in freezer and have it very next day, as it help to keeps same taste else dispose it off.
The vegetable section i make habit to order only when very few vegetables in fridge.
Curd and milk items required daily but make habit to use FIFO
herbs and Masala Powder i keep in very small containers in freezer as less in quantity and we can keep them fresh and use within time else if kept outside they flavor goes very fast.
Fridge check every week
Cleaning ( month's time)
I make this habit if not needed for longer time best is dispose of especially sauces and essences (like vanilla, rose )
Normally we order when making cakes but after one or two use, if we are not regular in making cakes so all those left unattained for longer time.

For me cooked food is no problem as I deep freeze the stuff putting in plastic boxes with cling wraps around them. My problem is with the other stuff. Just the other day I ordered for capsicum and when I was looking for something else I found a capsicum ready to be thrown way! This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have lots of issues with my fridge with hundred and one things stored in there.
So you throw food away - not a good idea.

we faced problem of vegetable in our old fridge, as that's why we changed and ordered new fridge last year.
We have LG now.
Normally for vegetable, we order think quality reusable plastic bags, or keep aluminum foil which we get in cornflakes.
I keep each vegetable separately in each bag and it keep fresh for long, but then again we have to use them within weeks time.
If other vegetables are getting affected, may be problem in vegetable section. (in fridge)
For green chillies, curry leaves, and coriander leaves i had ordered lock and lock containers, i feel lot of change in freshness after use of lock and lock containers.
For leafy vegetable, i use Tupperware containers.

What are lock and lock containers? I have a problem with chillies and coriander leaves. I order just enough for the day. We use coriander leaves a lot in our cooking. As far as leafy vegetables go, we cook it the very day we bring it. Life is not easy with having to store so many things. I even store cereals as they remain fresh in the fridge, once the pack is opened. I have two fridges and therefore have no problem with the frozen stuff.

I have just a small fridge, we are just with the two of us. I see the grocery shop as my big pantry and fridge at the same time. Means to me that when I need something I go out to the shop for it and I do not need much space in my own fridge that way. Here grocery stores are open at all days of the week, it is not far from my home, about 4 minutes walking. Let them keep all the expenses to keep things fresh, frozen and neatly, I will come by when ever I need something. I have just enough jars in my place with vegetables for emergencies, soups, pasta and rice, tomato ketchup, mayonaise, mustard, cookies and coffee, sugar and milk. For the rest I need to go to the store. Takes me outside for a while, seeing other people and my energy bill stays low!

I think so too. Not all are that lucky to have stores close by. I too have these stores and a market closeby and I have help to get our things. Still I prefer to stack up my fridge. Fridges are meant to stack up anyway?

So you have your grocery store as your store house
Good idea. You also like going out which could be a good exercise too. And you get fresh stocks. In the good old days there were no fridges and every time something was required one had to go to the store.

Hello allknowing. In our refrigerator, we put those fresh foods in it. As we are not available to do the shopping every day, we usually buy enough food for a couple of days and then store them in the refrigerator. So we usually have nothing to waste before we buy some more in another couple of days. It is really very convenient with a refrigerator in the house. Have a good day.

You seem to be well organised. Very few people can handle their fridges with efficiency. I am forever at a loss to know if I have anything there that needs to be used up before buying new stock!

When I still had a house, my refrigerator was like that-- always. I finally put cardboard dividers, about half high vertically on each shelf, and made the rule that you p;ut food IN on the left side of the cardboard, and moved a piece OVER to the right side-- and eating anything on the left was not allowed, unless there was nothing available on the right. Of course, I was the only one who understood the concept of FIFO-- first in, first out. Then men in the family ignored me, as always-- so I lived off the leftovers LOL.
When I moved into this travel trailer, I thought my troubles were over-- because I am alone all winter, and the fridge is half the size of a regular one, with no freezer. Boy, was I wrong! Stuff just seemed to disappear somewhere, and re-appear only after it was inedible. My cardboard divider trick doesn't work either, because the air just has no room to circulate. Now I use color coded leftover tubs-- I took seven different shades of tape and slapped them on all my containers, and each color is a different day, which is actually how most bread ties are coded here (believe it or not LOL). If a color is two days old, it gets eaten, and that's it. I also slap a color tag on my milk when I buy it, since the fridge isn't all that reliable-- if the ice builds up, it becomes an old fashioned ice box, and that makes the food spoil quicker. So far the color code works-- a number code would work too, I would think, but it's tough to number aluminum foil, while tape sticks to foil well.
My newest rule for the boys will be only mom goes in the fridge for anything other than drinks, and a leftover night every 3 nights, whether they like it or not. When I'm alone, I don't get too many leftovers (just when I make soup or rice dishes), but when the boys, both sons and other half are around, dinner gets complicated. The older son still hates anything close to healthy, the younger son loves veggies and healthy food, and the other half is on a salt restricted diet, and is picky about veggies. go Figure LOL.

What, you think color coding the food won't help? It does help LOL. Numbering it would help too, if you don't like a rainbow fridge...
Goodnight :-).

My fridge is a home for the aged as I keep even cereals there which last for months sometimes. If I were to list the things that are put in there, you will realise my predicament. Numbering is not my cup of tea. Once I remove an item it will never be put back in the original order and there are a couple of hands or more handling my beloved fridges (I have 2 of them)
Goodnight!

Hi All, it had been quite hard to manage what is inside the refrigerator in my home. Since there are so many people sharing the same refrigerator with us. My sisters and my parents will be putting some of their stuffs in our refrigerator as well. Since their refrigerator is having some problem recently. What we can do is, things that in earlier must out from the refrigerator first. Any leftover food must be clear within 2 - 3 days time.

I lose track of things in the 'fridge too and this is usually because someone puts something in and pushes whatever is at the front towards the back, and out of sight.
The vegetable drawer is my biggest problem, it is at the very bottom and it is not so easy to check up when I am bent double. The drawer is rather heavy so I prefer not to take it out unless I am going to clean it.
I clean the shelves when they start to empty and before I go shopping. That way I can add to my shopping list as I go along.
My fridge is not so big and that means it is easier to keep a check on things and I do not buy anything that I do not need regularly. I put the things I need every day at eye level wherever possible.

It sounds as if we all need to make it a daily deed to check on the refrigerator. Of course the more people who use it frequently the more care it needs.

Be it UK, the US and even India we all seem to be having problems with our refrigerator. I too have the problem with the crisper which only my maid can handle as it is at the bottom of the fridge and I am advised not to bend on account of my accident. The crisper is meant for vegetables and fruits but I have my cereals in it too! It is the small packets such as masala powders, baking powder and stuff which get misplaced over which we spend hours to find out. It seems we all have to live with it as we need to preserve our stuff at any cost. I have 3 packets of maida now the earlier two packets just made their appearance when looking for something else!

My refrigerator at home gets out of control, as hubby and I buy lots of various condiments like sauces and mustards and then I buy lots of fresh stuff that has to be eaten fast. One thing that helps with left overs is that especially with the weather cold, I can pull out several items and make a stew, or we just will eat a buffet of leftovers at lunch. If I make a dish at the evening meal that we all like my son will take any leftovers for his lunch. It is still not as easy as caring for the refrigerator at work. I am the food police there. Food safety laws for people in residential are a bit strict so I feel free to throw out left over food, or if the other staff has not labeled correctly, I throw things away. This is something I do very early in the morning before people are awake and then I wipe down the refrigerator. It only takes a few minutes, and I do it every day. There are not very many cleaning jobs I can do that will not wake them up, and this is one of them. I just do it on a daily basis.

No matter which part of the world one lives, fridge is the most complicated store house I see! One cannot possibly put back the item in the same place that it is taken from - atleast I have a problem with that. I have no problem with condiments as they are neatly labelled and stacked up. But I give up when it comes to putting law and order in my fridge. The items that go in there are not consistent - something different every day. Looks like we all need help!
