How do you react with those all Caps? Do you easily offended with an all caps messages and will immediately reprimand the person? Do you quickly react with comments you think are offensive but actually was just misunderstood, or are you more patient and
think a Zillion times before taking any action that can possibly lead to argument?

Hi!
There is no question of feeling offended. However, if someone writes all caps, it shows that he does not know the ethics of writing English or English grammar.
In other words, writing your text in capital words is considered as 'shouting' and it is not welcomed by anyone.
If the persons is close to me and he or she takes my advice in the right spirit, I may tell him/her to use the proper method.

Let me clear, your assumption was not wrong.
What I understand is - if you are write a word in all CAPITALS in between a sentence or some sentences, then it could said that by writing caps you are emphasizing some issue but if the entire sentence is in capital then it is assumed that the person is shouting.
(Now a days to emphasize any word or group of words we have the option of making it 'bold')

This is the first time that I learn that there is such a thing called ethics of writing English and of English grammar. I did learn some time ago that at some sites there is a formula about caps saying that it means shouting. But I`d very much like to know what is the reason behind all this as English is not my native language and I`m very much interested in knowing where it comes from. I thought that caps were used to emphasize some parts of your speech. It seems I`m wrong.

How about when commenting on social sites like Facebook there is no option of making your words in bold letters? Tho many are aware and following this so called online ethics but for me it doesnt matter how you typed your words as long as it is kind and inspiring I really wont mind..

As a general rule online, I tend to avoid situations which might lead to anger and hurt feelings. After all the internet is a public forum, and whatever I publish I tend to really want published: and for me the internet is a place I like to express myself creatively in peace and enjoyment; and therefore not overly controversially, even though I have strong opinions. For me, caution, sensitivity, discretion are incredibly important online. If I'm with relations or close friends and speaking to them on the phone or face to face...that's another matter: I'll be looser - and sometimes also more controversial - in my emotions and speech. The internet is an infinitely wonderful thing; in order to enjoy it to the full as I see it, it has to be respected, because it has enormous power. And so we have been given power we could once only have dreamed of. As I see it, it's a power that has to be honoured and respected, and handled with great sensitivity. It's just one individual's view, but it's the way I feel and the way I'm happiest online.

With relations and close friends and folks with whom I have close relationships I will be freer in my emotions whatever the medium; but in public forums I will tend to exercise strict self-control over what I post/say. I find that very important.

Im a bit guilty when it comes to my emotion. I sometimes cant contain myself when giving opinions I strongly believe even tho I know it might drew some negative reactions from the others, I tend to be emotional with my views on some subjects but day by day Im learning valuable things online, one of it is to maintain professional manner even on top of a heated topic. We can always present our thoughts in a good way may it be unacceptable and opposite to what others believe.

I have learned to think before I speak so I usually think things through before writing back.
One time a few weeks back I let an email get the best of me because it was on the rude side. But I learned from it and swore I would never do that again.
I try not to let people get the best of me but I am not perfect either so sometimes it happens.

Actually Im fast to react specially on a not so good situation. Im an impulsive person when provoked but Im a little nicer online ..At least online I have enough time to literally count til 100 before exploding. So just before I finish counting I become a little calm and rational. I also consider the language differences. Since Im not a natural English speaker I sometimes find some English phrases that sounds harsh but actually mean totally different.

Yeah I am actually more patient in person. I forgive everyone so much easier. The language barrier here is tough sometimes. I know I thought someone was being rude here a few times then I realized it was just the language difference...That is hard at times.

Hi vidhyaprakash, I havent reported yet anyone on here no matter how I distaste the comment, the only person so far that I reported was me haha.. when I posted two responses in one topic.
Oh I also reported one from FB. When one from my FB friend list message me that two rudest words. I dont know him actually. Im not sure if that message was really intended for me or just a mistake but I never tried to confront him anymore. Coz no matter if that message was really for me or just mistakenly sent on my inbox still not a good manner to do to any of your FB friends so I reported his message to FB admin.

Haha I actually skipped giving full details like how I react with such situation so I can have something more to write to my responders coz if I write it all above I might run out of words to write in your response box haha..
I react depending on how the other person presented his statement. If just sounding rude but no actual derogatory words then I will just reply him with firm matter of fact.

I have the same approach because it is so easy for someone to inadvertantly make a clumsy statement or be unaware that typing in capital letters is considered as shouting. I see no benefit in being eager to take offence, if there was none intended then not over reacting will avert a lot of problems. If it becomes clear later that the intention was offensive then you can always change your mind and make a more hostile response.

Yeah I agree with you Mr.Asylum. No need to make it a big deal specially if both parties know exactly that the substance of message is positive. Maybe the poster was just so elated with his message and chose to put weight on it by capitalizing, no need really of rebuke. To read and understand the whole message is a must before making any conclusion of what was the emotion behind that message. No need to ruin the positive vibes..

Online and offline I am more tolerant and patient because I take into account that people don't always mean what they say online. Offline or in the real world, some people may just have had a bad day that's why they said mean things to anyone. I cannot judge without knowing the whole story.

I don`t understand why caps would have a meaning, specially a bad meaning. If I want to say mean or rude things, I use words. Caps are used sometimes to enfasize a meaning or even I touched the wrong key at the keyboard without meaning to.

Hello ladies..Maybe there are just people so sensitive. There are people that are so quick to conclude rather digest well what was written, they immediately take the writing the wrong way. There are people also take your words literal instead of taking the exact points.

I treat online and offline correspondence similarly. I mean, it's still conversing. And I wouldn't be pleased if I'm shouted at by the person I'm talking to, audibly and in written form (all caps). I don't know if that's being sensitive. Maybe I'm just particular with conversation etiquette :) But in general, I refrain from reacting quickly to the opinions of others. I do try to understand first what they're trying to say just as long as there was no vulgarity used.

I used to be sensitive in all caps thing but when I started getting mature in online life I became a lil understanding to situation. I sometimes use all caps to give a strong emphasis on my points but actually not to virtually shout on person Im conversing. I learned to analyze the flow or nature of conversation so I will distinguish the emotion within the statement.

I think twice before I feel the caps are to be rude. I touch sometimes the block caps key and I find out after I have written a couple of lines. I used to write it all again, but now I explain, apologise, and go on talking. I found out that if I start cleaning up, I lose control of what I`m sayin and my answer or post is not very good. I am sensitive though when people mean to be rude. They can say rude things wherther they write with caps or not.

There are many reasons why we mess up our typing. I don`t have good eyes anymore and my hands have some problems due to arthritis. But what really matters, I think, is not an extra cap of a bad spelling, but the thoughts behing our writing.

Exactly, the thought of the message is what should be considered. I just saw some few people online that even after they admit that the message was a sweet and kind but because it was written in all caps they would still criticize the poster.
I dont know if there are rules in online writing but personally I write according to my emotion on my message if there are points I want to emphasize I would sometimes type the words in bold or caps but it doesnt necessarily indicates that I deliver it in a shouting mode.

I do not judge anyone with the way they use all CAPS in a comment, message or note. It really depends on what is the content of the message being said. I mean someone can respond using all caps but is just telling something ordinary, but just chose to type it in caps. But if somebody sends a message with all caps and the tone of the message itself is something a bit off, then I react to it.

Thats a nice attitude to maintain online, being cool and not easily offended. Patience and sound judgment in every conversation is a must since we have limited way in expressing the true emotion of what we are talking online. Not fast in putting conclusions that sometimes incorrect can give us a truly fine social life over the net..

Last week I began a discussion in politics. A lot of people have their opinions and some were good, while a few were just down right mean. I was a bit mean, as well. But my feelings were hurt when someone commented on me. I took it to heart and I made an apology about starting the discussion. Others said that I shouldn't ostracize myself when it comes to certain topics on MyLot. So,it's give or take and everyone's entitled to their opinions. I'm learning not to be too sensitive.

We can be sometimes dogmatic with our views, one reason I see is most of what we strongly believe are influenced by what we experienced. So we sometimes closed our minds from others opinion. I also believe its just fine to express our feedbacks on others point of view but we should also be prepared to listen. We may not agree and adopt what they says but we can always accept the fact that we are not the only ones living with opinions and principles.

If I see all caps I just shrug it off and think the person must have left the cap shift on and it was done mistakingly, after all the downside is with Mylot you cannot re-edit your response when you have hit the post response button. If someone has done it intentionally, it's only words. People think just because they are behind a computer screen it gives them carte blanche to be rude to others without any comeback. I know I am sensitive when it comes to chat rooms, and I hate them with a passion, so I will automatically turn off chat rooms, more often or not you get people using CAPS, bad language and politeness and manners go out the window.

Same with you I always practice the benefit of the doubt before jumping into conclusion since we dont see or hear how the other person delivered his words. Im an impatient person offline but online Im a little tolerant. My cousin was even surprised how I am able to survived in a chat room with out getting irritated and getting into fight . well for me its so easy as one two three..if I dont like what Im reading on the chat room wall then press the log out button. No need to mind them and give myself a heart attack anyway ..

I used to be sensitive about this in the past. I would get hurt when I receive emails or even texts that are all Caps. But then, I noticed that some people are just stupid. Most of the time, they don't know that all caps means shouting. When I'm good, I explain it to them. Otherwise, I just let them be and let them piss others off. Thankfully, I've never been the recipient of an email in all caps that was intentionally made that way.
I also use all caps sometimes with a friend, but not to direct anger at my friend, but for example, to emphasize to her that I'm shouting about the thing I'm telling her. And she knows this because I use that when I tell her about my frustrations about my boss. Like I would tell her, "I really can't stand him. HE'S SO STUPID!!!" Other than that, I don't think I've ever used all caps to anyone else.

I used to get hurt easily too with all caps messages I even wanted to receive text with multiple dots instead of just one, it makes me feel the message was spoken with sweetness but now that Im a bit older with not so good eyesight I now prefer all caps messages. Its easier for me to read..

I get kind of annoyed, because then it's so much more difficult to read and makes me head dizzy. Also, when they write this in a debate with me, I get really offended and well, I find them pathetic. In a cultured debate, people's arguments are not going to get counted more if they write 10000 exclamation marks and capital letters... it's just like shouting and screaming in real life, and that's really trashy. I try to stay calm and collected, but sometimes I just fight back, when I lose my mind.
