I've acquired a new cat. Actuall ywe brought him in in August. He's a beautiful Maine C@@n and he has diabetes. When we let him in the house, he was so thin, I could count his bones and I was afraid to pick him. I thought his bones might break or his skin would tear. He had huge bald spots on his sides, cataracts in both eyes and he slobbered constantly. The first night I went in the kitchen to check on him and had to clean up little puddles of slobber all over the floor. I just looked at him and said "If you make it through the night, I'll take you to a vet tomorrow and try to help you." He did make it and the vet diagnosed him a diabetic. She said he was probably about a week away from a coma and death. Now, he gets an insulin shot twice a day and he's doing great. He's gone from 7.2 pounds to 11.11 pounds and his fur is growing back. He doesn't slobber any more but he still has cataracts (they're permanent) to which he has adjusted. We called him "Alastair" and he fits right in with the other cats here (There are now 4) Running with the herd is one of his favorte things and he is one of our favorite creatures. Just wondering if anybody else on here as a "Special Needs" cat like our Alastair.

We have a good friend who has a diabetic cat but does well. Just like people when you have a special needs pet, it is not the end of the world. Just time to reavaluate just what is best.

That's an awesome story. I'm so happy that you got him from somewhere other than a pet store. You should be commended on your daily care of him. I am lucky and have 2 healthy but bratty cats.

I took in a stray in the late 1990's. He had a great gaping hole in his neck. A friend said that if I took him in she'd cover his vet bills. So I took him to the vet. The vet said "He had FIV, since he's a stray we'll put him to sleep." I pulled him closer to me and told him: "He may be a stray but he's MY stray!" So we fed him up until he was heavy enough and his skin was loose enough to do the surgery to close the hole. It took 33 stitches to close it up. Hobo is in my photos. Kismet was an underweight 3 week old kitten when we got her, but now she's a happy, healthy girl. I say all my cats are rescues, some more rescued than others.

I adopted a wonderful Siamese girl from the local animal shelter. She was a tiny little thing whose eyes where soooo huge. When I spotted her in the cage I asked to hold her. The attendant warned me that the cat was vicious. I picked her up and she promptly snuggled into the crook of my neck and purred her purr off. I fell in love on the spot!!! We went up and paid the fees, put the cat in the carrier. We got her home and one of the neighbors looked at the cat and announced that "That cat is pregnant". Poor KoKo weighed about 4 pounds including her kittens and we were sure that she wouldn't last through delivering the kittens. But she surprised us and made it. She was only bones with a bit of fur over them. She had dropped from 4 pounds to two and one half pounds after delivering the kittens and then she lost another half pound while she was nursing the babies. I soon discovered that KoKo couldn't handle normal cat food. I ended up having to feed her baby food with other meat mixed in with it. I also had to feed her Iams dry cat food so that she would get the essential nutrients that she needed. After we weaned the kittens we took KoKo to the vet to get fixed. It was there that we found out that not only did she have a bad heart, but she had a skull fracture, and broken ribs. Her previous owners beat the daylights out of the poor thing. The entire time she was alive I had to make her special food, give her medication for her heart problem, and she had to travel with us when we went to town overnight. She was the apple of our eyes and our precious baby...I lost her in 1994 her heart just gave out. After a few months I went back to the animal shelter and the odds were in my favor...I found another female Siamese. She too had been abused and was a special needs kitty. She is very loved and she also is treated like a queen. I adopted her in October 1994 and she just celebrated her 18th birthday.

I never thought that cats can have diabetes. It is nice to know this fact. If the cat needs an insulin, he or she will be treated like humans. They should not be wounded, since the healing process of having wounds is difficult to treat.

Hope your cat is doing fine now. Our dog sprained his hind legs when he jump to catch our cat. No- they're not on wars, but this naughty dog loves to chase our cat and play with. That day, he lost his balance and fell off from our stairs and sprained his leg-he really cried in pain :( Thought he can't walk again, but thanks God, now he is doing well.
