Many of you know that I came for a long weekend to Viña del Mar where I have a friend. I brought my computer. This friend has just come back from an awesome trip to Paris (where she attended her daughter`s marriage) and to Istanbul where she had a dear friend. She told me about it testerday at her house and I came back immediatly to see maps and pictures of Istanbul. It`s awesome. I would recommend you Topcapi palace and the blue Mosque. Do you help yourself with internet either to plan a trip or top understand better about other places? I do that a lot to understand my mylot friends a bit better. Share your experiences!

I do sometimes use the internet to look at new places to see if I would like to go there. It is usually when someone shows me the link and wants me to learn more about something. I don't often do it on my own since I have no idea where I would like to find out about. Thanks for bringing this up! Have a great week!!!

I hadn't really thought about that area. I remember some of the Eastern Orthodox architecture and some of that was pretty interesting. Is that Istanbul?

Istambul is a place with many cultures as it has been one of the gates between the east and the west. Check The Blue Mosque. It`s awesome. Then there`s Topkapi, a palace.

I haven`t read a post about your health lately, Deb. So I hope that no news is good news. Check Isbanbul. It is awesome! In fact eastern architecture is so much more beautiful and delicate than ours that ours looks grosse by comparison. When I went to the south of Spain many years ago I was amazed at the remains of arabic architecture.

Oh, Yes--definitely! I love looking up pictures from the various countries my mylot friends live, and hearing about people's travel experiences. I really like it when fellow mylotters put up their vacation pictures as well, since I can't travel myself. One of the best things about this site is being able to learn about and see the far corners of the world
I hope you had a wonderful long weekend visit, and I hope you will share pictures as well!

That would be great-- I love looking at people's pictures. Right now it is sleeting and very windy here, and pitch black of course-- so I am looking at pictures of beautiful sunny places
I am just hoping this wind storm we're having doesn't tear the roof off the alpaca shed--the wind can get pretty extreme here sometimes! Anyway, I'm glad you had a good time, and I hope you get to travel more.

I travel as much as I can now. Health is a problem and I don`t always find someone to go with me. But I try to do the best I can. I came back today, before I had planned, because my friend had a lot of work and it was too cold for the kind of clothes I took. I saw no reason to stay more if she was not going to be around. I will go agsain when she has more time.

I will place pictures as soon as I get home. And I`ll take care to comment something specially for you with a picture. I just took 3 pictures from the window of my room at the hotel. In one of the pictures, you can see the government`s beach building. I hope it can be seen well.

I like the idea of virtual travel with friends. I use the Internet to plan for my future trips. I need to book my European train tickets 90 days before my departure. I am still trying to plan my route. I am glad that you had a lovely weekend in Vina Del Mar. I loved seeing pretty Vina Del Mar with your charming taxi driver friend. We had a wonderful day out with him showing us the sights. A hug to you my dear friend.

Thanks, Maxine. I went to my friend`s house, did some shopping, took a couple of nice walks and also went to lose a small amount of money at the casino. I returned before I planned because my friend had a lot of work to do and I did not want to be in her way.

Well, I didn't use the internet at all to help plan during the last time that we took a trip away from home five years ago because we were going to Phoenix to celebrate my cousin's 40th birthday and we didn't have a lot of extra time. However, when Tom and I went to Miami for our honeymoon eight years ago, I did use the internet to choose some different things that I wanted to do during the week that we were there. I think that internet is a great tool for planning our travel and the attractions that we would like to visit.

That`s part of what I mean by virtual travel. You can plan what to see when you travel, but you can also dream about a place that you don`t know if you will ever see. I do that a lot since I`m in mylot. Many of my friends live in places I`ll never visit. For me it is nice to learn a little bit about their homeland.

Sister
Why do you call it 'virtual travel', as seen from responses and comments you are with your friend, i can't travel alone, but always with hubby or son, i mean a companion
have a great time
share pictures

I didn`t mean my trip to Viña as a virtual travel. But after my friend told me about her trip to Istanbul, I went to check it online. This is what I call "virtual travel". And since I know you, I have done some online searching about your beautiful country, your customs and your culture. When Your husband talked about Diwali, I immediatly went to search what it was as it was the first time I heard the word. Then I learned about Rangoli.

I look up hotel and plane reservations on the internet and maybe get a list of sights to see and a map. But I don't explore it online. I would rather experience it in person and not use another persons photos to see it instead. That would spoil the surprise of seeing it first hand.

How about learning a little about the history of the place or getting a map?

I do actually research places when I hear of them. I love learning about different areas. It is neat to learn about where a far away friend lives. I haven't traveled outside the US in several years but when I did, I researched to find out what was common practice and what was unacceptable as far as manners and such go. Places are so different that I wanted to be prepared. I also like seeing what the specific features of the areas are too. I would hate to miss something..lol.

Personally i prefer to be surprised whenever i go on a trip, of course the very basics like accomodation and places of interest i will browse a bit online just to have a feel for it but anymore than that,i prefer to go the place and explore it . Expect the unexpected, that my motto. It is much more gratifying to be surprised at a place you have never been to before. when you least anticipate it,some thing fascinating pops up.ehancing the "wow:" factor. i have been to few places and invariably,i always end up just exploring at random and see what comes up.

I have gone to many "wow" places and have discovered that nothing that you read about will dim the real thing when you come to it. So I still prefer to learn a bit the the history behind it so that I can put into context the place.

I've also heard that the European part of Turkey is very beautiful! I had a flatmate from Istanbul (I like to call it Konstantonoupoli) last year and she has told me the best about the city! It's very close to Greece and it's in my plans to travel there soon! I'd also like to visit the capital some time!
Regarding my trips, I always use the internet to learn about the monuments and the history of the places, I print maps with the locations and gather as much information as possible! I also buy trevel guides most of the times to have them with me at the trips!

I would love to go there although it`s very far away from where I live. Today I have been reading about Konstantonoupoli-Istanbul and Turkey seems so full of History that it seems that everything occurred there for a lot of centuries.

I am still having my bachelor's degree. But I do like to travel. What I have been doing is going to different states in my country. Can I call it traveling by the way? Well, I guess I consider it is. So I always looked up the internet for details on places of interests and accommodation choices at least two months before the actual departure. I would certainly like to travel to other parts of the world someday.

I`m staying at a hotel now, but I will stay with her a couple of days from Tuesday on. Tomorrow she has to work and I will go to the seashore and have a nice walk. The hotel is downtown so everything is nearby.

My daughter uses the internet to book the flight, motel room, and rental car. Then we plan where we want to go while we are vacationing. We like to take really short hops of about four days. We plan ahead so that we can pack a lot of sight seeing into so few days. I also like to see where the people that I respond to on mylot are from. I love to use the internet maps and dream that maybe some day I can see that part of the world. If I had all the money I could ever spend, I would use it to travel and see all the world that I could.

I have heard of many people using the web to book flights and all that. I have an agency, but I don`t go anywhere to book my flight with them. I use emails for that. I have a time share so I don`t need to book a hotel, but I use it to know what I`m getting.

Yes, whenever I travel, I check first where the places to go through the Internet. I want to make sure the iterinary, check the map, plan the route so I will save money and time, going to these places. I also, make sure I have cam with me, and share this to my friends and family via facebook.

I even (and specially) search the web for places of interest. I like to see city maps too, so I have an idea about what needs a car and what is a place where you can walk.
