English becomes the most essential language in the world used. Almost all the people from different countries around the world use English to communicate. It's because of the important of English in any scope of lives. At school the speaking skill is measured in term of the ability to carry out a conversation in that language for people not English as their mother tongue. This reality makes teachers and parents think that speaking ability should be mastered by the student and children. Based on the reason above, in the recent years, English language teaching has focused on teach the English language using role play. does it have effective way to teach English?

Yes, I think role-play is an effective way to teach English. It gives a more solid approach to teaching the language, and gives the learner a clearer picture of how English can be used in certain situations. The learner is able to learn more effectively, and this method also encourages him or her to learn when to use particular words and phrases in daily conversations.

This is actually a common method used in the English institute I manage, Christine's English School in Guam. Through my years of experience, I've particularly found that role-play of various situations using the English language is effective and also engagingly fun for both tutors and students. If you're interested, you are more than welcome to search Christine's English School on Facebook, & like and even share the page. =)

There are two main methods that should be used to learn a language. The first is not so imaginative. This would be things like role-play, grammar practice, vocabulary instruction. The second is based on problem-solving and real world usage. Students can read articles in English and discuss their opinions, solve real problems, hold real, non-scripted conversations. We need the first part in order to get the correct grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. These are the pieces of the language. But the second part is essential to fluency. We can't really know the language until we use it for real purposes.

There are many ways to effectively teach English but the constant demand is that it should be practiced as much as you can. In whatever method you prefer, you still learn the language one way of another. I agree with another poster that you should develop they four areas of learning any kind of language. I would advise to start on speaking and reading since those tow skills can propel you into the otehr skills.

I learned basic English from school, but not the conversational style. I always envied my classmates who can comfortably and confidently converse back to back in English. However, when I started working, in a call center, day by day, I became more comfortable and fluent. Just like any skill, it just takes practice.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Yes u are absolutely right, English is the universal language so that every individual on this can interact with each other easily. There are lakhs of languages in this world and it is not possible to interact with every one in their own language and hence English was chosen as the universal language for interaction. With constant practice and hard work English can be mastered very well. What say?

Yes, English has become the universal language. English is a difficult language. English has words that originated in many different countries. Because of this, it's not possible to follow clear-cut rules. We can sit down and talk about parts of speech all we want. While this may have it's place and be of a certain value, I see three major drawbacks. The first is that, because English doesn't follow specific rules all the time, there are many exceptions to every rule. That's a lot for a beginner to take in. The second is that it's been shown that learners learn better when they're interested in something. I've been teaching for 30 years and have two degrees in education. This is currently accepted as a given. Children learn better through games than worksheets. This doesn't change because we become an adult. We still learn better when we're interested. Role playing is more interesting than studying rules. The third drawback is that it's also an accepted given that we learn better when we are actively involved in the process. For example, would you expect someone to learn how to do math by having them sit and listen to a lecture or by having them do math? It follows that we will learn to speak English better by speaking it (role playing) as opposed to hearing about it.

This is such a good discussion. You're right, English is considered as the universal language. This is the reason why many people try hard to study it. Many parents force their children to learn English thinking that their children could have an advantage if he/she knows the language. It's pretty usual to expect teachers to teach grammar at school, which is also important since it's the foundation of the language. However, once the students study spoken English online and in academy, many of them are forcing themselves to learn quickly while the first thing that they should do is to be comfortable with the language. Making the student comfortable in speaking the language for me is the best start in improving one's speaking skills. Be comfortable in speaking, accept one's mistakes, improve the mistakes, practice speaking.

This is my new baby nowadays... as of this moment I have been experimenting on a lot of teaching strategies that I can think of. Teaching Thais is not easy, they have difficulty with the pronunciation of V and S, t and D. Very challenging. I was comparing how we were taught in the Philippines and how will I apply it here. But I have realized so many things. 1. Thai students need to decode four teaching. a. Khmer script to Alphabets b. Thai Language to English Language 2. Thai vocabulary are pronounced like English. a. fon tok = means Rainfall or raining. which in English is Phone and Talk b. mii = means have which when heard in english ME as me 3. Quite confusing for them. I pity actually the students for they have to decode all these in their brains. 4. Most Thai Local teachers don't speak English too. so the students get to practice English in my class or when I talk to them. Ideally I want them to learn how to read English but it takes time, and the directors want to hear their students speak English. So all the reading and spelling exercises I have prepared were scrapped and I went back to memorization of lines which I don't really want to happen. As much as possible I want them to read and understand the meaning of what they read. Effective way... I learned some thai language, talk basic thai and translate to English.

It's an INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE. We get connected because of this. One thing Ive realized when I would be travelling far of travelling wherever I wanna go around the globe. I may not have all the money i need in my pocket. My stuffs might not be complete. But if I have English in myself, I will survive wherever I go. There is no way of teaching English effectively. Using simple sentences though very basic is enough. Being able to convey what you mean to someone with whom you are talking to is the only way to carry on a good conversation
