I had bad experiences too with doctors and side effects of medicines. That's why I no longer go to doctors and I've taken no medicines for several years. Yet when in very bad need I try to find a very good doctor. Recently a friend of mine found his cure to a very painful health problem by going to acupuncture sessions. So I have more trust in alternative medicine today.

It's good to just take medicine without any prescription from the doctor. But if you already have a prescription from the doctor before. It's not bad to buy such medicine without another prescription...

I support your views. There are a lot of people who use over the counter medicines. It may bring about disastrous effects on one's health, though it is also true that it is not always possible to consult a doctor. But one must try to consult a doctor before taking any medicine and should never neglect any ailment, be it even minor. One should always remember that it is ultimately the person concerned and never the doctor who would suffer by this self-medication.

It is better to go for modern medicines than having self-medication. The doctor prescribes medicines appropriate for a certain medical conditions. Great day!

Self medication is really dangerous. A medicine who worked for another person might not work for you or a medicine suited for another person might not be suited for you. The dosage and how often it should be taken is another issue. Only doctors after assessing your condition can give the best advice.

Welcome to Mylot, all medicines should be given strictly under a doctors orders as they know your case history and they can closely monitor you, so if there are any side affects the medicine can be changed or altered, without guidance you could easily overdose or take medicine which your body rejects and causes serious implications to your health.

Medicine is sick care, and food is health care. The majority of us would do much better with our health if we ate healthier foods. Fruits and vegetables have natural occurring enzymes that help to fight off diseases. Hippocrates himself said "let medicine be thy food, and food be thy medicine." Even back then they knew the importance of a healthy diet. I think the majority of us would do much better without medicines.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Yes u are absolutely right, i feel extremely bad about your friend and wish if your friend could have consulted a doctor and then taken that medicine. I think many people are doing this and i am sure they must be repenting about this and it is very much risky to take medicines without even having a word with the doctors. it is not wise to take own decisions in this regard. What say?

Well, if it's just for fever, cough or colds, we can buy those medicines over the counter, without the need for a prescription. But when it comes to serious illnesses like allergies, stomach pain, you have to seek medical attention for that. Sad to say, others doesn't have the resources to get themselves checked by a doctor so they resort to just drinking medicines that they thought would help or medicine that others just tell them to try. Sad but that is reality.

Yes brother, the people of third world countries are too poor to afford a qualified doctor. So they, including me, are to consult with the quack village doctor. Those doctors prescribes medicine as par the signs. But a sign of a disease may be the sign of another disease. But our village doctor never diagnose a disease as per the scientific process. And yes me too keep some antacids, painkiller like paracetamol or diclofenac potassium, some antibiotic like ciprofloxacin though I should not take them without consulting a doctor. Things that I wanna say everytime I cant afford a qualified doctor. I am a needy person.

There are non-prescription medicines that you can take however, it is really best to check up to a specialist before taking such medicines because they know more about ailments and treatments and they have more knowledge about the subject and gives suggestions that would treat you effectively.
