My mom used to tell me to take steam, just boil the water in a container, use a towel and keep it on your head, and take steam till it ends,it actually clears your nostrils, keeps you warm, all sort of breathing problems get solved by this, there are many steamers in the market which you can buy, there are steamers for small kids as well because small kids also have a problem of breathing,It also helps in migrane problems.runny nose is the problem which doesn't have any medicine which can cure it permamnently but the only solution is taking steam twice a day. Hop you guys will try as well!

Yeah,I too have tried this and it really works. Whenver I get cough or running nose I will try tthis and with immediate effect I will get a relief from this. I think the basic theory behind this is that the bacteria or germs that are causing these symptoms get suppressed or get killed after having the steam. I have also heard that bacteria/germs will multiply in certain temprature and will get killed at some other temperature. May be in my opinion we are giving that temperature for a germ to killed when we are having steam. But I am not sure about this. What do you say?

Brewing and breathing in freshly brewed coffee works the same and I think it may work a little faster. I always loved the way coffee brewing smelled and didn't mind making it, I just never drank it until I was a lot older.

Steam is good for most breathing problems. However I don't think it helps asthmatics much. They don't have any trouble breathing in (inhaling), their problem is that they can't breathe out (exhaling). So the steam doesn't help with elasticity of the bronchioles to assist exhaling.

I can say that steam did help a lot for asthmatic people and when you have colds and clogged nose. Aside from steam, ion is also a good source to help asthmatic patients and pine trees emits ion most especially early in the morning. So, waking up early and breathing the air around pine trees will help a lot.

Yes, it is age old process of relieving nasal congestion used in our country, India. Now a days different medicines have been developed and so such traditional practices are not used unless and until one gets frustrated by over use of medicines. But it is a unique way of getting relieved of nasal congestion and is particularly useful in sinusitis. Thanks a lot for starting a discussion on the effectiveness of steam inhalation.

I like the steam with eucalyptus. I am actually addicted to it always my sister to bring oil of eucalyptus from Australia. Yes, steam really soothes breathing problem. Actually even just a simple hot soup can help patient to ease on breathing. Remember the chicken soup always recommended when one is sick.
