it's fun once I discovered my body's rhythm and some aids

December 13, 2012 9:57am CST
I had known as a young child that warm milk helps with causing the body to relax by releasing chemicals in the brain that help the body to relax. I drink warm milk every night about an hour before I would like to go to sleep--about half a mug and I take 1 5mg melatonin tablet which converts in the body to seratonin which also helps the body to sleep. In addition, my pharmacist told me about taking an allergy tablet which cause also help the body to relax. And, I don't drink coffee or anything with stimulants and I watch comedies on tv. I usually sleep about 6 hours using this method. I try to sleep at about the same time every night, too.

Thank you for your tips on how to have a good night's sleep. It is helpful for people who suffer insomnia and perhaps worry about it needlessly. I like your natural remedy of warm milk, a spoonful of honey added to it is recommended too. I had not heard about melaton tablets so I checked them out and found that melatonin is also known as circadin and is a hormone that is released naturally by the pineal gland as it gets dark. Which I thought was very interesting. There appear to be few side effects from taking these tablets, but they can cause headaches, back pain, a sore throat or a feeling of weakness in some people. Happily that is not the case for you but it would not be advisable for children, pregnant ladies or mother's feeding babies. Six hours does not seem long enough to me but we all need different amounts of sleep and these also vary as we age.

Great tips, set aside the allergy tablet taking. I haven't had allergies in my life yet, for as long as I could remember and I don't take medicine when not necessary. I have always wanted to try if drinking milk really helps to put myself to sleep. I have heard this from several people now. I guess it's about time to give it a try and experience it first hand. Maybe I'll do it tonight if I remember it.

I do things like that, too, when I can't sleep, but I don't do it every day. If I did, I'd never be awake enough to function, since my kidneys take longer to rid my body of things. If you add honey and cinnamon to warm milk, it will help you relax even more.

I've knocked off the caffeine later in the day and I take allergy pills, melatonin, pain meds and some prescription meds. Last night I also threw some cold medicine at it too, I was stumbling and not able to see straight when I went to bed.

I'm glad you have sound some things to help you sleep. I do need to sleep more myself as I don't find 6 hours to be adequate. I probably sleep less than that per night here. I would sleep better if I eliminated some people in my life living in the same house with me, that would be my biggest sleep aid.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i am glad to hear that u have maintained a good schedule and that will really help you personally. I have sen many people who maintain such schedules but they themselves do not stick to it due to work loads or due to their laziness. I am happy that u have maintained this schedule and i would like u to sleep for 1-2 hours more and try to avoid taking any tablets unless and until a doc has not advised to you. What say?
