I think that watching the news, listening to it on the tv,or radio, or reading it online often can be a bit overwhelming. I just think that there is so much focus on bad things all the time that it can be emotionally draining. There is rarely happy things talked about on the news and if so it is smoothered with bad news all around it.

Hi!
You are right that news channels keep repeating the stories and keep highlighting the cases related to attacks, murders, abductions, rapes and robberies etc. Everything looks gloomy and negative to a viewer or a listener and this puts the listen off. I wonder why the keep the percentage of positive news to a lesser extent.

Yeah and I get tired of hearing all of that. I mean it is so bad that I don't even like to go to yahoo homepage. Because that is all there is. Immediately there is news all the type. I like that good doesn't have a page like that so I can just get done what I need to instead of becoming overwhelming depressed. It goes to show that bad news sales because that is really all they focus on.

I stopped listening to the news years ago. It's depressing and now it's worse because you can't believe half of what they say. And you're right - it is emotionally draining. I don't watch TV anymore and seldom look at the news on the net. I mostly block it out when it comes on the radio. I remember a long time ago, maybe 20 years ago, I read where somebody started a paper that only printed good news. Yeah, they went out of business. I guess nobody was interested. I think the worst part is young people are being brought up on it and they accept it as the norm. They just get sucked right into it.

It's too bad that the newspaper that only wrote about good things went out of business. It just shows that so many people are interested in hearing all about the bad news. I though just can't stand it. It is sad that children grow up hearing and seeing these things. This can lead to a lack of empathy for others when children jus think of it as normal and a way of life.

"Lack of empathy" is exactly it. And it's the same with movies, although that's another subject. But that's one big reason why kids are turning out the way they are. If this type of news reporting has that kind of effect on adults what does it do to an impressionable 6-7 year old? And what kind of 16 year old will that kid be? And that's just the "normal" kids. What about the overly emotional ones or the ones with other, more serious problems? And lack of empathy can bring about a state of apathy, which is found to be a characteristic of serial killers, to name one group. Politicians might be another.

I lost interest in the news programmes a long time ago and do not bother to watch them at all. Apart from the constant stories of violence and crime, there is also a tendency to report unimportant issues rather than the real news.
Far too much news time is dedicated to such subjects as which soap opera star has been seen in a restaurant with someone else, or relating trivial stories about the royal family etcetera. I imagine that if civil war broke out then the story would take second place if an actress was seen dating or the Queen had a cold.

I use to think I had to hear the news to see what was going on in the world. This past year I stopped listening to the news and would only hear what people would talk about in passing. What I learned is that most of the news they talk about is bad news about things we can do nothing about. My world still functioned just fine without hearing all the bad stuff. There were two days I was really worried about the terrible snowstorm that was suppose to hit our area. We barely got 2 inches. All my worry was for nothing. If we had got a lot more I would have dealt with it then. The bad news is very emotionally draining so I don't miss listening to it.

I completely agree with you. It is very emotionally draining. I really don't care to watch, hear, or read the news every day. There is just too many heartbreaking the things that happen. At times I just feel like I can't handle it because I know that I can't do anything to stop all of these acts of violence.

Yeah it sad to hear all of these bad things happening. We continue to be bombarded with the suffering of others and the crimes that are being committed against so many. It will be nice when there is no suffering but it is going to take a great deal of changes in order for this to come about.

We are overwhelmed by by bad news, that is true. Since the same thing happens with newspapers then I feel it must be at least partly true that bad news sells. It is also true that bad news depresses.
I can no longer bear to watch news about Syria, I am dumbfounded and horrified by what is happening there. It is not as if many of us can do anything about the bad news, except perhaps pray.
If I were an alien and my only source of information was TV and radio news then I would regard planet earth as one of the most undesirable places to live and human beings as the worst animals living on on it.
We need to remind ourselves often of the blessings most of us enjoy, the beauty of the world around, noble and good deeds done by selfless people and the love of family and friends. That is the only way to keep things in some kind of balance.

Yeah I agree with you. Since there isn't much that I can do about the bad news I have a hard time dealing with it. It definitely does sell because that is the focus of most news topics. Yeah your thoughts are so true when you refer to looking at it as an alien.
I try to continue to reflect on the good about our earth and that there is good in some people. I continue to pray about these things because God truly is the only way that there can be a drastic change of suffering world wide.

I get tired of the amount of bad news that is being broadcast, and I get tired of the fact that even though we live in Canada, all we ever hear about anymore is AMERICAN NEWS! However, I do not get tired of hearing the news in general. I am interested in keeping up with what is going on in the world around me, and I refuse to hide my head in the sand just because it's depressing.

Yeah there is a lot of American news broadcasted a lot. I'm glad that your up with what's going on in the news. I'm aware of what is going on in the world. There is suffering, crime, violence, health issues, etc etc that plague the globe. Things continue to get worse and I know this. So there is no need for me to hear it over and over again. I would much rather live my life, as all of it goes to show life is too short. So spending all that time watching it,and be depressed about is a waste of time that I can't get back much rather do something that is ENJOYABLE.

I agree with you. And most of the time they could careless who they hurt or are exploiting. It is so sad to see these things happening on a regular basis. I feel bad for the many people who are truly suffering and the media who use them for their own personal gain. It really is sickening.

Yeah I know that there are people who read or watch the news daily. Some people watch the news multiple times throughout the day. I know that I just can't do that. If there is something particular I'm looking up I can start searching for it directly. Otherwise I will just avoid the news as best I can.

I'm glad to hear that you don't get upset often. That is a good thing. I think that it is good for me to know a little of what is going on around me. But I don't want to hear all of the major sad stories that they talk about over and over again. I can't change the suffering that people are facing, or bring an end to it so I would rather not think about it over and over.

The news really is depressing. We can be more productive in other ways. There are many things that we can do with our time and not get down about what is going on around us. There are a lot of sad things happening. But we don't have to feel overwhelmed by it if we keep a limit on how much and how often we watch it.

I must say I watch the news rarely now. I get most of my information online which allows me to pick which stories I read. In the world we live your bound to find out about the news from friends and family regardless of whether you tuned in or not. It would be great to live in a world with out murders and war. Fact is governement is funding war and there a people amongst us with mental health issues which is obviously an excuse for killing innocent people.
I was just reading an article today about Jessicas Simpson favorite green sweater. The reporter captured multiple photos of her with this sweater on during different occasions. They kind of made of fun her fondness of this sweater. I don't see a problem with wearing your favorite sweather a thousand times. It just goes to show what a superficial society we live in.

I completely agree with you. I read that article as well. I'm glad to hear that she has a favorite and comfortable sweater she likes to wear. She is a human being and we all have favorite clothes that we like to wear. It's sad that the media has to portray it as a bad thing. It just goes to show that she is not the type of person who HAS to spend a ton of money on new clothes all the time.

I don't ever watch or her the news, as it is the same thing all the time, murders, rape and such. Nothing good on the news anymore, o it just isn't worth watching. The only thing I watched, was the school shooting, and after awhile that got old as well, so i just shut it off and said forget this. Just to many bad things in this world. It gets a person so depressed, to see that stuff, so I find it better that I not watch it. Take care, and have a great day.

I completely agree with you. I try to avoid the news as much as possible it just is too much for me. I know that there are people though who watch the news daily. I just couldn't do that. I get tired of hearing about all the suffering constantly. Yeah that school shooting was horrible. It is so sad the media kept bothering these families in this time of grief for them. That is another reasons I don't like to watch the news, because the media goes to far and doesn't give people the space they need. Thanks you too.

This is why I avoid it, unless there is a reason for me to turn it on then I don't. I don't have a TV, and avoid it online, or on the radio. I will switch the channel, and go to a station with music. I remember when I worked nights never failed when I left work, I would get the news all teh way home, so I would shut the radio off and sing to myself.

Yeah watching or listening to the news all the time can cause an overwhelming since of hopelessness. Especially since 90% of it focuses on the latest crimes, etc. I know for me since I can't stop the suffering and pain of others, or save those who are being killed for no reason then it is best that I don't watch it. It ruins my day because I can't undo this craziness. And that is not the way I want to live my life.

No, I do not get tired of hearing the news. But for me, I watch not only about news about depressing events that happen in the world. There are also news about things not so sad. I pay attention to news about advancements in technology which ranges on topics of video games, social media, and computers. There's so many categories within the news. If I get tired of reading or hearing about news on category like technology, then I move on to another category like health or politics. If I get bored with those categories, I move on to another one. There's always something new and interesting to hear about if you widen your search on other topics.

Glad to hear that you are able to watch the news with no problem. You are right there is a wide variety of news to choose from. I'm being more conscientious about what I want to watch or hear. I like hearing things about improving one's life or making relationships better, practical things can be applied in my life. But all those depressing stories become too much for me.

One bad news that I won't be tired to read is about politics. I want to get updated of what these leaders been doing and keep it in mind so might in the next election I know better whom to choose. But when it's about calamities, murders and tragic events, it's enough with me that I read something about it. I don't even need to finish reading the whole story, it's just depressing.

Yeah I agree with you. The tragic stories are very depressing. It is just too much all the time. If we think about these things all day we are definitely going to be depressed. So it is good for us to look for things in particular that we want to learn about and then do something else with our time, because if we watch more it will often put a damper on our day.

I mostly hate watching and listening to news. Most of the time the same news repeats after every hour which is really irritating. No doubts the news keep us in touch with the world affairs but even a small news is highlighted as a breaking news which i hate the most. My father is affected by these news and talk shows the most. He takes a lot of tension because of these things and then he scolds and gets angry on us without any reason.
