Making Some Changes

United States

As a caregiver for my son I have begun to let myself go health wise. I just have not been feeling well and I have put on about 25 pounds. A couple of weeks ago I decided that I simply have to make some changes and that I may have lost control of my life - but I can control myself! I am working on controlling emotional eating, getting a stricter exercise regimen and cleaning up my diet! I hope to lose all 25 pounds this year. I already have begun to feel better. anyone else making any changes?

I've been working on my weight since spring, but I need to get more exercise in. I tend to get lazy! I intend to write down a few goals for the coming year and that will be one of them.

Getting enough sleep is a problem for me, too, and I know that makes it hard to fight weight. I'm doing better than I used to, but it's still hard. Here's to a better 2013!

My goal for now is to spend at least 30 minutes a day on the treadmill - either running or walking. so far so good! I have to lose some of this extra weight. I am also trying to stay in the bed at night for at least 7 hours -- it's difficult to do that though! I have to make some changes and I am already starting to feel some better...

I have a gym membership but I rarely use it as I can't get out too much. I need to go back - maybe I can start tomorrow when the aide comes. I started spending at least 30 minutes a day on the treadmill and punched my punching bag today.. it all counts! lol!

I'm glad to hear you are going to make time to take care of yourself. I need to work on my emotional eating. And I'm thinking about checking into Curves. It might be too expensive, but I need a controlled environment to really get a lot of exercise done.

It's a place only for women and they have a lot of different exercise "machines". You spend five minutes on each one, and after the five minutes you switch with someone else. They also give you your own nutrition instructor.

It is great that you have decided to make these changes. I need to get more exercise. That is one change that I really need to make as we move into 2013. Right now, my yoga mat is in the closet gathering dust. I need to change that and haul it out--get moving. I don't need to lose any weight, though. I could actually stand to gain a few pounds.

I have thought about starting to do yoga. I have never done it but I have read about it a lot and thought it might be very beneficial. I need to lose about 25 pounds.. so far I haven't gained - but haven't lost anything yet - but I only started a couple days ago! lol..

I'm going to start this year to get my body toned. So I will be doing some yoga and then using weights. I need to tone but I don't need to lose any weight. When I first moved to Puerto Rico I gained five pounds which got me to 130 pounds which was more weight then when I was pregnant. So I cut sugar out of my tea and put lemon in it. I also usually only drink lemon water and that has now gotten me down to 120 pounds. I'm also hoping to concentrate on writing a children's book or a magazine article that will get published. Good luck in losing the 25 pounds and Wishing you and your son a Happy Healthy New Year!

I know you love to run but I find for me is not really good for my feet, ankles, or knees. I find walking fast is far better then running. You put less stress on your feet, ankles, legs and knees by walking fast.

I have considered doing yoga. I just haven't gotten started as I haven't found a good beginners program that I like yet. I may keep looking but so far I haven't found anything. I will increase my miles that I run every week though - so far I am already ahead by about 2 miles this week -- that should help some!

I have to try and get organized too. I am like you - I run a small business, am working on my master's and feel like I waste lots of time too. I do have to provide the care for my son and that takes a lot of my time - and a reason why it is so difficult to get into a schedule because I never know what kind of day he's going to have...

Well, I have decided 2013 is the yr. for me. Not having to wait on someone else to give me a chance to keep waiting, or not know what they are wanting to do. It is take charge. Be more in control, and that especially means when it comes to taking care of this wound to get it really completely healed. When you see one doctor saying one thing, and another doctor thinking another, and not even sure where he wants to go it makes you really wonder what is important.

I did not really lose weight when I was working as a kitchen. I am still a fat boy. Some say I am now getting slim but not really change for me.

It can be particularly difficult if you are working in a kitchen setting. I am at home all day now so if I do not purchase unhealthy items then I do not have them available! That makes it a little easier in some ways!

I am only five ft 2 and have got down from210 to 191 but have a ways to go and not being able to do my own cooking really hinders me some. I have been cutting the damned rice that they insist on serving most of the time and the CORN both high in starch and shoot up my blood sugar;sometimes I leave the rice altogether if there are other foods to eat.But I am sure I can do it and am trying really hard to cut back . I have about fifty pounds to lose b ut I know i can do it too.

You can do it Ms. Hatley! You're already down some - it's good to cut out the starches if they are a problem, but remember you need a few of them too - just not overdoing it is good. Do they have fresh salads or vegetables there that you can eat. If you fill up on them then you don't get as hungry for the other stuff.

Being a caregiver can result in neglecting one self and I am glad that you have realised this and are already taking steps to rectify the situation. It is sensible to take care of yourself too because you son depends on you being well enough and strong enough to care for him. Let us know how your weight loss proceeds and enjoy your time of exercise. You remind me that I also need to take more interest in my fitness regime. When I was younger I exercised regularly but it get more difficult to make the effort as one grows older.

It is very difficult to get on that treadmill in the mornings! I hope to get outside tomorrow for a nice run. It is important to feel better, so the changes are necessary!

I understand you... I did that when I had problems with my ex husband. Id eat, and eat and feel bad after. All because of him. I also decided to change things for the better. So I got rid of the husband. Funny thing is.. I dont eat like that anymore. Take care there. Hope to see you here soon.

I do a lot of emotional eating since I am a caregiver for my son who was injured in an auto accident.. I got rid of my husband nearly 20 years ago! I have been very happily divorced since then. Glad to hear you are working things out.. it's always good to take care of ourselves!

Hello there! I am also heading to a healthier diet. Not that I am fat. It's actually my husband who is on the heavy side. I believe that if I want my husband to get rid of unwanted love handles and live a healthy lifestyle then we should do it together, right?

I think it is a very good idea if you can do it together. It will help if you are eating the same things so that you do not tempt each other with non included dietary items. Some say it's much easier when you work on those types of goals together.

Yep, I'm turnin over a new leaf for new year's. I want to keep my flexibility and mobility as I age and I plan to try some stretching exercises and continue to walk for exercise when the weather is nice. I wish I enjoyed walking on a treadmill but alas, that probably will never happen. I dont' want to go to a gym where all the people are addicted to exercise because that is just not the lifestyle for me. I also want to change my eating habits like you have listed. I just flat over eat. I consume more calories than I need and I want to slowly trim those down to a more reasonable amount. I'm sure that I will lose weight, but I will have to stop the constant travelling that I do for a job before I'll really be successful at any lifestyle changes. I do look forward to the coming year with all its newness and opportunities!

I do not enjoy the treadmill either - but I am thankful that I have one so that i have the opportunity for exercise no matter what. It keeps me moving some - I've been doing at least 30 minutes a day and I am feeling better but I hope to get a good outside run in on Saturday if the aide really shows up! lol..

Its really good that your are now serious for your health.I am also trying since a year to bring about some changes but because of my strict work schedule not able to do that. But from coming year onwards I may able to do that as the work pressure on me will be less.I am also thinking of doing some exercise in morning to bring down my weight as I am a a bit overweight.I will definitely try to control my irregular eating habits and will put more efforts to control my diet.
