We have to dogs and they are great! Our Black lab though is starting to get old. She has issues from being over bred and we had two vets when she was younger tell us it would be surprising for her to live past four years of age, well she is a little over eight years now but we can see age on her now. She has much gray hair now on her face and chest and her eyes are clouding over a bit. I am so sorry for this. She has been the best doggy we have ever had. I think we will get a year or two more before things are near the end but we are dreading this time. I mean we all knew it would come but it still is rough. Has anyone else been through this, they're dog aging prematurely due to over breeding? The vets are thrilled with how well she has done but compared to other labs her age she looks so much older!

we have had other dogs and cats and though we loved them and miss them this is that dog. You know the one that no one ever forgets and everyone just loves to pieces. We have to share her with my hubby's grandmother in fact. She watched her once and if we go anywhere she expects the dog if we didn't bring her there we would be disowned

I know how sad this can be. I met Stryder when my ex decided to bring him home from his sisters where he had been staying temporarily because he lived in an apartment where he couldn't have dogs. When we got our house he decided to bring him home. He was such a dear. Got put in doggy jail a couple of times for biting the mailman. Bad dog but he was just protecting his area and we refused to chain him up. He was usually in the back yard until someone came on the property and then he was alert and came to the front. Most of his friends and such were okay and passed his muster just fine. Except for Craig but that's a different story. Anyway, We could go traveling, leave our belongings and Stryder in the back of the truck and now they would still be there when we got back. Stryder got old. He couldn't see. He wasn't let out much because he wasn't good. But one day he took out in the opposite direction when a jockey boxer came by. It was rather funny although we wished he'd bitten him. He fall down the inside stairs and just couldn't see anymore. We finally had him euthanized and buried up in a meadow in the mountains where we used to go camp. He was a dear animal and I spent alot of time with him. He was a blue heeler, short and stout.
Sounds like your lab had a hard life.

She should be glad to have you as her owners. Labs are great dogs.

We got her at about 5 months or so the estimate from the vet. Her first owner threw her out of his car in front of my hubby's work and she has been our fur baby since. The over breeding issues are all health issues.

That's so sad. You know, that people weren't careful enough with her. But I'm so glad she had you guys because she was able to be happy and live a longer life than predicted. Could she have cataracts? I wondered if that was what was making her eyes cloud over.

No the vet says the eyes are not getting enough blood flow from restricted veins part of the over breeding issues. I am glad our state has been tougher on the puppy mills but it's too late for our lady.

Giving up a friend to premature old age is always difficult, and it's not less hard because she is a dog.
You can give yourselves a pat on the back. You gave her a life twice as long as predicted by her doctors, and what sounds like a happy one.

It is. We just started her on some herbals and acupuncture which has seemed to really help with her hip pain...hoping we can make life comfortable for her as long as we can.

A dog's lifespan should be 8-9 years old, all teh dogs I have had or friends have lived well over 16 - 25 years old. But again breeding your animals you are basically killing, they will just have even more and more complications as they age. I personally could never do this to an animal, they have passed some stricter laws about breeding which is good, but it doesn't stop the backyard breeders. But again they should all be charged with neglect and abuse of their animals.

In an ironic twist my husband and I who are very against breeding of animals in such a manner and do not believe in buying pets ended up with two pure breeds one with papers. Our lab though was actually about 5 months old when we got her and one day in front of my husbands job at the time a crazy man stop his car in the road threw her out the window and drove away. My husband ran out and grabbed her and she has been our baby ever since. The coonhound we have was a buddy of my husbands dog. He purchased him, left him on a dog run for 3 months (he too was around 5 months when we got him) took him out hunting and was mad the dog didn't know what to do. Dummy never trained him duh! SO he was going to leave him at SPCA and instead hubby brought him home too he has brought home all of our dogs in this fashion over the years

we have two dogs at home and they like 7 years old in human age. they are two male dogs. actually i'm already preparing myself for the scary part. i guess we should just love them while they're with us. we treated them like a part of the family.

They are more then just a responsibility to those who can't help falling in love with them.
