Hi all!
One of my friends's partner snores while sleeping. My friend states that his partner's snoring causes him lots of disturbance if he himself is not in the state of sound sleep.
Does anyone faces the problem of snoring while sleeping either with himself/herself or with his/her partner? How do you manage it?
And what are the simple ways to reduce or minimize the snoring. Your invaluable suggestions/tips will be helpful.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU IN ADVANCE!

My ex-husband snored. Horribly loud! He would sometimes wake himself up. I finally got in the habit of nudging him to roll over. If I didn't need to hear the alarm clock in the morning, I would sleep with ear plugs. I once had another partner that snored. Funny thing though, he never snored more than 45 minutes. So either I needed to fall asleep before he did or I would just wait an hour or so.

Hi StLouisMetroTutoring!
Such a long log in name.
Ear plugs could be one of the options, if the sound is low. It is funny to hear that one of your partners used to snore for a particular time period and you used to sleep earlier than him.
Thanks for sharing.

I have first hand knowledge on this. My husband snores....very very loudly. Earlier, I would find it very difficult to fall asleep and would pinch his nose every time he started. But he would get angry...so I stopped that...LOL.
My present solution to the problem is to go to bed before he does.
Many friends of his who have happened to be in the same room when he is asleep have said that I need to be given an award for sleeping with him...LOL
As you know, the last few months we are living in different states and I've escaped the snoring.

When my daughter is tired she snored. I do too sometimes. I think that some people have a problem while asleep that some skin comes down and covered the air passage and then a person can't breath so they snore because they have their mouths partially open. There are some things you can get that help with this. One is a plastic plate you put in your mouth that puts your jaw back and then they don't snore. And there is that thing you put on your nose too. Or there is CPAP, with is a breathing apparatus that helps some who actually quit breathing several times during sleep. So there are options you just have to determine which is right for your friend's partner.

Hi Cel!
Yes, you are right that any kind of blockage in the nasal cavity could cause snoring.
I have not heard of plastic plate therapy.
I think breathing apparatus would be used in those cases where the problem is severe.
Thanks for your valuable suggestions.

Actually i also snore as my husband always tells me. Yet, he is just informing me , not waking me up. I think, i snore not so loud, so he still can bear it.
as for him, when he starts to snore, i let him sleep on his side and he will stop snoring.
But he said as for me, whether i am on my back or not, i snore.

It means little bit of sound is essential.
I also feel that weight could be one of the causes of constant snoring.
Thanks for additional inputs.

Well, according to my daughter who is on her 2nd year proper of medicine, it's better that we make a sound because if we don't it means that the tongue has already blocked the passageway of our breathing.
But still, i really hope i can eliminate it. I started snoring when i added weight.

Woohoo, I finally found this discussion!!
Last month, my friend and her love interest(not her boyfriend yet), me and another friend stayed at a hotel. So there were 3 of us girls and 1 guy.
My friend and this guy shared the bed. I was so jealous at first and I kept mumbling I want to sleep(literally) with my boyfriend too. Later on as the night dragged on, her guy started to snore, REAL LOUD! I snickered silently. My friend woke up because of the snore. She said it hurt her ear hahahaha! And he was moving a lot she almost fell off the bed.
After that, I was no longer jealous!!
Anyway, if my partner was a snoring monster... I guess I'd push him off the bed? Or sleep some place else. Ask him the next day for separate rooms. It's mean, I know but c'mon! I need my sleep, too!
So I think these actions are justifiable.

HI Aja!
It is good that finally you could locate the discussion and could respond.
Well, you spending a night at the hotel gave you a chance to first hand feel the experience of snoring and its affect.
Even if you find that your (would be) partner a snoring monster, please do not throw him away from the bed, he would get hurt and then you will have to make him stand up.
If there is problem you could sleep in another room.
Thanks for sharing the experience and for enriching the post.

No prob, deepak!
You are too kind though. hehe. Nah, I would still push him off the bed. He's not that delicate, anyway. He'll recover. He's done it to me before, this should be a good opportunity to get even.
I have an uncle who snores real loud too. I am the one who sleeps the latest in our family so I know who snores and who doesn't. hahaha, glad my uncle sleeps in the guest room.

I also agree that it is disturbing to hear the snoring. However, actually it takes some time to adjust to it. My husband also snores loudly. As time goes by, sometimes I can fall asleep sooner with his snores. When you get used the same sound every night, you will not find it so bothering.

I have heard of nasal strips that can be put across the nose that is supposed to reduce snoring. The thing is that it can be a much bigger problem. One of the huge signs of Sleep Apnea is snoring loudly. There are some pretty bad side effects of that too.

I have also heard about nasal strips. I understand that one strip would be required on per day basis. Yeah, you are right that there could be some side effects of snoring.

Honestly, I snore if I am so exhausted. I don't mind if someone will woke up and punch me out of being sound asleep.lol I would feel the same thing, if I heard a big boat honking when they are about to reach the deck; the room will be filled with unbearable sounds.

I'd like to share a funny thing with you here. When I was in the university,I lived with some girls together in the same dorm.Usually I am easily to fall asleep, but one night I was sleepless, and I found in surprise, one girl was snoring, one was talking in her sleep, and the other girl was even grinding her teeth.Wow,can you imagine that scene? It was just like a special symphonic music, lol. Then it was more difficult for me to fall asleep then. And what the worse,I got frightened in the dark.

Hi Piya!
You have given a good suggestion of using ear plugs or cotton balls. However, I feel it would work when the sound of snoring is not very loud, else ear plugs may not help.
Thanks for kick starting the post.

Yeah, snoring could be really bothersome especially if it's too loud to bear by your partner or friends. I don't think experts have not thought of a remedy on how to correct or even stop snoring. Some said there is a way but still have not perfected it. I have noticed that mostly drinkers do snores when they are asleep, same with over worked or over exhausted people.

I used to sleep before in the sleeping quarter of our office. Sometimes I will hear a very loud snore and almost half of the people there will wake up. The snore is really loud and one employee told me that its always the same person. Since then, I do not sleep in our office sleeping quarters anymore.

I can understand your point that you do not sleep at the place where you find a snoring person. Does it mean that my friend should sleep in a separate room to avoid his partner's snoring......lol!

hey Deepak, very good topic to end the year I must say. I am pretty sure this touches every body some way or the other. Yes It does touch me as well and the experience has not been very good. anyways, Steaming just before sleeping helped us, and so would a relaxing bath before sleeping. Inhaling salt water in the nostrils ( might not be easy) again before sleeping ensures sound sleep.
And one more, do a lot of physical activities ....it has two benefits....one it takes care of breathing and if the partner can also be physically active would ensure both sleep soundly irrespective of any sounds/snoring ...:)
Regular yoga exercise ...involving breathing pattern would also be beneficial...happy sleeping...
so do you snore?.....:)

Hi Shweta!
Nice to see again on board.
Your idea of steaming and bath before sleeping sounds good. I understand that there are medicinal drops which contain salt and could be used for blocked nose.
Physical activities and yoga will also help in sound sleep.
To your question - I also snore sometimes, so tells my better half.
Thanks for appreciating the post and for sharing your valuable suggestions.

My dad snores really loudly and it has been a problem for the entire family (my mom especially of course). What he does is he usually sleeps facing one side (left or right) and never with his body facing up front. It reduces the snore and sometimes he would not snore at all.
You also have to take note that if your friend's partner snores so disturbingly loud, he may have a weight problem. The bigger the person is (in weight), the louder the snore would be. He may have to go on a special diet. Snoring people also usually have problems with their cholesterol levels and their blood sugar.

Hi!
If sleeping on one's side lessens the snoring bouts than it should be adopted.
I feel that your observation about over-weight problem appears right. Over-weight could cause snoring.
