This is just my opinion and it only pertains to the US. A college education has been pushed and pushed as the only way to make money and "get ahead" for the last few decades. It's been made to seem that if you don't have a college education, you are without goals and will be poor (and stupid) all your life.
For what it's worth, that isn't true... but my point is that so many kids and their parents bought this that almost everyone is college educated now. BUT... there are still many, many jobs that need doing and don't require a college education. Who's going to do them? Think about it. It will be those who have paid thousands of dollars for an education and are probably still in debt for it, applying right alongside those who graduated high school and went to work.
Employers look first for experience in their field and are skeptical about hiring someone who is over educated because they will want more money than the employer can afford. Who will hire a lawyer who probably has never mowed his own lawn to mow your yard when you know a guy who has done it well for years now and doesn't charge much?

She's still buying the idea that you can't make money without a "proper" education, even though in her case it doesn't make sense. Just goes to show how easily we are manipulated!
piya84, you may very well be right. Higher education is a bubble that is bursting, although they don't talk about it.

Well said. That's exactly how it is people are swimming in debt from going to college but are not finding jobs in their fields and have had to settle for jobs that don't require a college education because that's all there is. There are several at my job working a part time minimum wage job because that's all they could find. One even blabs about having 2 different degrees and wants to go back for nursing. Imagine how much debt for the 2 degrees she already has then to toss another one onto the pile?!?!? I've wanted to go back to school but that won't gurantee a job and unless I'm guranteed a job there's no way I'd consider going back.

Since the economy is not well, so many companies can not afford the high education staff. In fact others can do the same job with lower salaries, so these people are much more preferred. Sometimes the reason why it is difficult for the high education people to find a job is because they require so much. I think at least you have to show how much you can bring to the company rather than focusing on how much you can get from it.

HI Piya!
It is really sorry state of affairs that even after doing MBA one is jobless. I find that now a days there are many who do not get a job after graduation and they go for MBA. The number of people who complete MBA through various modes is increasing day by day, however, the enough number of jobs are not there for them.
As regards CA, I understand that demand of Chartered Accountants is still there and one should get a job if s/he is a Charted Accountant. In IT sector there are less jobs now a days and supply (read jobs) are less than demand (read aspirants). Sometimes, one has to settle less than for what s/he deserves for the sake of continuity and earnings.
Even Engineers now a days are not getting good jobs, specially those who are from IT sector.
I am not jobless, by the way and have the most secured job (at least) in India.
Happy New Year to you (in advance).

The job market can be a minefield for some, regardless of their qualifications or experience..Having gone through college for a Degree, there's no guarantee there will even be a job available in your chosen field at the other end..And even with the qualification, you could be considered OVERqualified for some jobs or alternatives you might then consider..Me,I'm heading towards my 20th Year with the same Employer..

The job situation is tough all over the world it seems. It does not matter what kind of degree some one has. Jobs are very few these days. And it seems more and more people are turning to the internet to earn money. Lots of people are creating online businesses and others are doing sites like this. We do live in a new world today. Nothing is as it was years ago.

In the US, if you are in the field of education, having any type of advanced degree will hurt you right now. It's the law that employers must pay in wages a higher rate for every degree owned in education, especially in the public school system. So if two teachers started working for the same school district at the same time and started at the same wage, they would be earning the same 5 years from now. Unless one went back to school. In this case, the one that went back to school will get an automatic pay bump after the degree has been earned. This sounds wonderful if you stay with the same district. However, when moving to another district, the new district MUST offer a higher wage for that degree. It is not law that experience must receive compensation, but they will often offer something. With all the budget cuts and lack of funding to public schools, school districts are now refraining from hiring anyone with an advanced degree if at all possible. It's far cheaper, therefore "better" in their eyes, to hire a teacher with experience but no advanced degree instead of a teacher with experiece and an advanced degree. I've lost out to teachers fresh out of college. I have 20 years of experience in schools and a Master's degree.

What was also failed to mention is that with the recession the budget cuts came along as property values/taxes went down therefore less money in the pot to pay the salaries the unions say a teacher can command. Hence the uproar with Scott Walker. The unions are unhappy that their % will get cut as the employees they represent will take a paycut or pay freeze.... which is the reality of the majority whom are in the private sector.

I am not jobless thankfully, just underemployed. We do have several people they hired by my work for the holidays whom are in between jobs. I almost think the more educated you are the harder it is to find a position. The sad thing is the more educated you are the higher the salary you require the fewer positions are open. Sadly people have to settle for positions beneath them as some money is better than none if their unemployment has ran out.

Things are tough everywhere right now. Being educated helps but there are alot of people I know that are too and have no job. I am currently employed and furthering my education in the field I am already in. This is my second time back to school. I think that one of the key things will be to be flexible and willing to grow out of a current situation if need be. I am afraid to depend on one field in this day and time.

I have a friend who went to school for medical assistant and could not find a job in which she went to school for. She went to school to have a better life for her kids and herself, and yet she could not find a job in her field. So now, she is at home working from home in a call center type setting. Not in the field she went to school for. Its really sad that this is going on and it is scary, I'm even scared to go to school and what for because what if I spend all that money on a certain degree I want to make sure that I get a job. So I guess that is partly why I hadn't gone to school yet. I went to school to become a legal secretary and that was in 2006 and ever since then I have been looking for work in that field and no one would hire me because I had no experience and then other times because the companies were laying off certain people. So I should have a job in legal secretary but instead I am working retail jobs. I wish I could find jobs for what I went to school for, but it just isn't working out. I am working though. I think like someone mentioned, maybe it is time for people to start being creative. In my area I know that they are looking for nurses and people to work in the medical field. I couldn't work as a nurse though, because I just don't like needles. Otherwise, I'd make the decision to go to school for nursing. I'm thinking of maybe opening up my own business maybe and writing books and selling them. Until our economy gets better. I've always liked writing and I also like baking and I'm getting into sewing so I'm deciding to do something with that I'm just not sure yet. I think maybe people should start getting creative and see what they can do.

One of my friends has a college degree and she is working at McDonalds right now because she could not find a job anywhere else! Another of my friends is supposed to be a teacher right now, finished college everything and she is working at CVS because she could not find a teaching job! It is getting REALLY scary out there. That is why I am NOT wasting my time going to college right now...for what? To work at Mcdonalds or CVS? I can do that without a degree!!

Well I just got unemployed last month and the reason was I can not stand my crazy boss any longer,so I am jobless now but I sure I will get a job very soon,as for your opinion,I think that it just the individual phenomenon, because well educated will lead to good job,but sometimes if the major are not welcome by our society so may be even you got a doctor degree you still can not find a good job.

goodluck to you.I think you bit a misinterpreted it.Initially in my country being Chartered accountant,MBA or Engineering was sure shot way to get job.Its isnt the case now. There are just too many of them and no of positions have gone down because of recession all over the world. So they are jobless. It didnt mean these people who are highly qualified less talented.

Hi! In the Philippines, jobs are really hard to come by, even if you graduated from a top university. I graduated from the most prestigious university in the country and I did land myself a job, but it is not a very good paying one. I think there's a lot more opportunities outside our country. By the way, where do you live?

That;s really sad that we spend more money and days to have a higher education, then being a jobless. This must be one of the priorities of the government to focus on hiring those eligible people not those with no knowledge but have connection in the government.

Hi! I was wondering what country are you from? I think unemployment is one of the problems in most countries. I just hope the solutions to that would be sooner. More and more people are becoming hopeless in finding jobs. There is really no certainty in our lives. We must have faith in God to get through life!

I have a university degree in literature and philosophy that has never helped me find work. Some companies tell me it makes me over-qualified. I have got a few jobs by never mentioning it. I am out of work at present. Most employers want work experience rather than strong education from their employees.

Hi friend, sad to hear about this. Lot of vacancies are available in our country, but still some jobless people are available here. We must search a lot for a good job and update our knowledge and skills to get a good job. Wish all your friends to get a good job in the near soon. Suggest them to apply in online job sites and update their knowledge in this mean time

In reality, there are some people who are well-educated but they don't have work. Some factors were considered based on their previous experiences that are not related to their profession. Some companies are looking for those people with extraordinary experiences but still in line with chosen field.
