I am very much attached to my computer. But I didn't think that it can lead to reduced memory. I always thought that doing lots of task in computer will boost my intelligence. But some People including my mother believe that sitting in front of computer longer can actually reduce your memory. That is to say you will forget more often than not usual day day to day task.
Suppose you do a task for 8 or 10 long hours. Is it injurious to health and memory.
Or is it just the opposite?
What do you think is it true or a myth?

This is an interesting topic. So I did a little research. The results were a little surprising to me.
For computer use - non-specific activity on the computer: Using the computer was shown to have a very small, almost negligible, positive impact on memory in later years. However, computer use combined with exercise, showed a significant reduction in memory loss in later years. Exercise by itself didn't have much effect either. But when they were combined, they seemed to be good.
Internet use - Long use of the Internet might impact your memory - and not in a good way. It looked like the studies that were done were talking about using the Internet to get information. It seems that when we use the Internet, we don't work to retain information. We might know where to go to get the information, but we can't actually remember what the information is. Maybe we're learning to think and remember differently?

It is engaging, isn't it? I sometimes think I must be addicted to using the computer. It's very hard for me to walk away sometimes. But I think now that I'm aware of this information, I will pay closer attention when I look up information and try to remember it. I do know when I'm writing about a source, like I did for this response, I look back at the source often - too often. I forget exactly what it said. I can see it in myself. I think it's a matter of knowing that it's right there and I can access it easily, so I don't bother to try to remember it. I personally think it's more laziness than actual memory loss - but maybe I'm just making up excuses. Who knows? I'll work at it.
Happy New Year!!!

It is true that when you are addicted to something it is really hard to walk away from it. How similar our thoughts are in this respect. Also sometimes when I cannot remember something I just out it in my computer notepad. So that I can refer them at a later stage. This helps me to do my job faster.

Thankyou for your response. Actually you are right in your observation and it serves the question best. According to me daily exercise is a must for computer user and it reduces such loss. For Internet usage this surely holds ground that computers result in some reduction of memory but it is surely the most popular and engaging media so People cannot avoid it.

I don't know whether it's true or not. But generally if you don't practice something as often then you will eventually forget. So remembering things is about doing things repetitively to keep your mind fresh. If you are mind is out of practice with doing things that enable you to remember things, then your mind will eventually forget things.

Very true in actual practice also if you don't keep practice then you are bound to forget. In real life also it happens so often.

I am sure that there are likely to be several drawbacks involved with spending such long times using a computer, which could vary from affects on the eyes to lack of exercise. However, I see no tangible relation between computer use and memory. This seems like a complete fallacy to me and it is something that I have never heard before, unless I have forgotten about it due to excess computer use.

I think it is true that computers are not a direct threat to memory. But it is
right that if you exercise daily it takes away some of its harmful effects. But
today there is no time for regular exercise also. What do you have to say to this ?

was long in front of a computer can cause back pain and difficulty to stand upright. I usually longer than 6 hours and breaks to eat and drink, we should be able to restrict the ability of our body to be not susceptible to disease. It wouldn't harm your memory, it depends on the condition of the body.

Actually, I don't know if it has an effect on my memory but my body, I can feel pain if I would sit for a long time. My eyes feel irritated too. That is why what I do is I am taking breaks from time to time.
Have a nice day!

I think it is a myth.It can't damage your memory, but it can damage your eyes.If you work with computer 8 hours per day.you must use some spectacles .and don't use CRT monitor use LCD or LED monitor.Try to buy some cooling glasses anshu

It isn't just brains...all that time sitting down alone is bad for ones health and fitness overall. In fact too much of anything is bad - everything should be done in moderation.

I don't think it is true that the memory can be affected by sitting in front of the computer. Physical health may deteriorate if we sit down for hours at a time without a break however. But that stands to reason and most of us know when to quit and do something active for a while.
In my experience spending time on the computer is an advantage to my mind at least, I am learning all sorts of new things and it is so easy to find out facts and figures. My life would be poorer without the computer and I don't think for one moment that my memory would be any better.

That isn't true! If I would remember if I heard about this. Computer isn't bad for your memory but your eyes maybe. Just keep a break sometimes and you will be fine.
