Bamboo Canon for the New Year Celebration...I think it is safe?

The media warn the people not to use fire crackers in the Philippines, to prevent possible injuries, probability of having fire and hazard to health. In the family, we still continue the old-type canon. Though we changed the bamboo canon into metal-type canon, this will be our form of celebrating the New Year 2013. The children have the customized-type trumpet. How about you guys?

I think it is a very good and nice way to welcome the New Year. It is so safe, I mean the bamboo canon. I am not that supportive of the metal canon because it sometimes has defects which sometimes blows.

How do you make the bamboo canon work? At home we just turn our mp4 full blasts to make wise.

Hi, You get a length of five-inch diameter of bamboo tube five feet in length, bore a hole though the nodes, bore a small hole in the last node, pour in gasoline or heated kerosene, touch a glowing stick to the hole and kaboom you go. Metal ones are more streamlined, acetylene or LPG can be used for a bigger bang. You need to blow out the smoke afterwards, one reason for it going off in the face at the wrong time sometime.

Due to higher pressure generated by acetylene or LPG, bamboo is not safe to use. It tend to blow apart if overfilled, one reason some resort to using metallic tubing. I have stopped the practice long time ago, hate the booming sound and the inconvenience.

We don't do fireworks on New years eve but although they are outlawed in this state people always manage to get them and put on a show themselves. I don't like fireworks because I'm always afraid something will catch on fire or someone will hurt themselves.

ah yes, the old cannon! with everything, especially those that involve fire and explosions there are always risks- the cannon itself could explode causing injuries. make sure it's built properly, you set it off properly and you don't use it too many times. Hope your new year was happy and safe!

that's good. I remember our neighbor used to make them with softdrink cans and they tend to tear apart after several uses.

We did by using a hard metal as a canon.

We only used trumpets made from cardboard in celebrating the coming of 2013 a few hours ago.

Yes, that was the old style before but it can still be adapted, should the people like. But i think this is only applicable in the province where there are bamboos. My in-laws just blew the carton trumpets they bought. At least it maded a loud noise.

I haven't seen a bamboo canon in my entire existence. But I saw metal canon already from our neighbor. It was really huge and scary when they start using it. I felt I was in the war. Fire!!! Boooom!
