poisoning dogs

Today we went to check on some puppies and their mother. Yesterday the heavy rain had turned the small stream behind them into a torrent and their mother had been unable to cross it and get back to the pups. She was around again this morning but we were horrified to see a large dead dog lying in the road nearby. He had been poisoned. Now we are concerned for her and her puppies. Was the poison put out for them and the big dog got there first? The big dog was also abandoned, but he was known to people who feed him so he was surviving until someone put out poison. This is a terrible way for an animal to die but it is quite common here. Some people go out of their way to feed and keep an eye on abandoned animals, others are cruel and poison them. They give a bad name to everyone else. It is against the law but we never hear of anyone being accused of poisoning dogs.

I perfectly understand what you are going through there. We have a similar situation here. The authorities don't do anything to gather the abandoned dog and many people think they are some gods or something, and decide to take away those poor dogs' lives only because they can.
I'm so sorry for the poor puppies! They may survive the heavy rain but they can become victims of those cruel people later.
My strategy here is to spay as many female stray dogs as I can. (on my expense, of course) This way, the number of strays won't increase. Have you thought to do something similar?

Sounds as if there are many cruel people where you live! Poisoning animals is certainly a cruel way to kill an animal that has probably done nothing against the person that killed him.

By what you comment I can imagine the problem is not only true in Great Britain, but also in other European countries, like Italy, Greece and Spain. What might be worse is that we might not be only referring to animals, but human beings as well!

I live in Greece not in England although I am English. Dogs have a better life in England you don't see many stray dogs and there are places that you can take them to if one is found. There are refugees who are treated like animals - we just don't meet them in the streets.

Someone told me that there are thousands of dogs abandoned in this country. The situation is made worse now because of the austerity measures, people cannot afford to keep their animals so they take them for a drive and drop them off in the hope that someone else will pick them up. So we see the animals wandering around looking for a home and a master. Most of them are really friendly animals. It breaks my heart. The other problem is the people do not believe in neutering so cats have kittens twice a year and dogs continue to increase the canine population.

The poison was put out for any dog that came in the ares. I do not know what you are to do, but perhaps you should contact your local SPCA. Or the dog pound about it. Also maybe warn your neighbours. This is terrible. I hope they find the one who did it.

I hope you found out who poisoned the dog. Maybe the police or the sheriff would help. I guess you live in a small town and do not have enough taxes to get the SPCA, but you are all helping each other. Oh how is that dog doing? This is from a dog lover.

Aww, that is just so horrible..that poor dog. Why oh why are people so cruel I'll never know and I'll never understand.
Did the dog ever make it back to her puppies yet? Can you rescue the pups and put them somewhere safe until she comes around again? Do you have some no-kill shelters you could call?
I hope something happens quickly so she can be reunited with her babies. Keep us posted on the outcome of this sad situation.

I did say that the dog got back to her puppies. There are now three people taking an interest in the puppies and one of these has found homes for 6 of them. So only three left now. There are no dog shelters here. One of the people who is also feeding these puppies has 55 dogs of her own! She has lived here for a long time and been unable to turn a dog away. One of her dogs is 15 years old. Thank you for your interest.

Sounds like definite opposits of the spectrum here. Too bad people have to be cruel. Can't you keep an eye out and then turn them over to the police? I'd be doing some detective work and put a stop to the poisoning. That is inhumane and I would hope you have laws in your area to prosecute people who would do such a thing.

I believe there are laws to protect animals but laws are made to be ignored here.

I think I would read up on the laws in your area, be familiar with them, then I would start a petition and quietly get some people who back the laws and get something done about this. It is inhumane to let it go on.

I think the one who abandoned the dogs are as guilty as the ones that poisoned them. They all should be punished by law! But do the authorities do anything about this matter? I'm afraid they don't.
We have the same problem with the stray dogs here. If I had the power, I'd make a law that would be so harsh that nobody would ever think about doing any harm to a helpless animal.

I find it hard to think that someone could be so evil and callous as to poison a dog, it's animal, it deserves life, what gives them the right to say it doesn't deserve to live? I guess trying to pinpoint the person who put the poison down is near on impossible and they know that, it's easy to do, some people just don't have a conscious. It is saddening.

Its sad that people would do that to an animal, it makes you wonder what they would do to a human if given the chance. I know that people want to help a stray animal but they should first call the shelter and have it picked up, at least that way it can get a good meal and hopefully somebody will adopt it.

It happens here to and the cops don't take it seriously enough. I would throw the person in jail and toss the key, but then I'm an animal advocate.
Can you or a neighbor take the puppies in and find homes for them. If they are young and cute there is a chance to find people who might want them.

That is very cruel to poison an animal, like that. I hate to hear stories of animal abuse in all forms and yes this is also animal abuse. I hope the other dogs are OK. It sickens me that there are mentally ill people out there who will think nothing of doing something like this.
