Girly Movie?

The other day my BF said he didn't like Top Gun. "It's a girly movie", he said. Top Gun? Seriously? I always though that was one that both men and women could easily get into. Is Top Gun really a girly movie (chick flick) in your opinion? And here's where I make this discussion NOT A POLL. What is it that makes something a chick flick vs a guy movie? Does having a romance in it automatically disqualify it from being a guy movie? Or does it depend on the nature of the romance, and other things? What do you think?

I remember talking to an American girl who happened to say she had just watched 'Bridget Jones' Dairy" and was surprised when upon saying that I enjoyed that movie, she was surprised, saying it was a girl's movie. To me it was a funny all the best, urban

It was funny. I seem to recall my ex liked it, though I don't think the bf would.

Neither do I, really. I either like a movie or I don't regardless of whether it's a romance, action, Science Fiction, whatever. But to some people it seems to be an important distinction.

In chick flick, the girl gets to be around in as many shots as the guy, and girl gets to wear one clothes too many so it makes bfs nervous...they expect a requisition anytime soon and so they dont like such flicks.. In guy flicks...the guy is spending more time with guys ...usually bashing, or racing...trust me, guys dont get along with each other...ever...they only act to make chicks feel inferior.. Hope you understood something from that differentiation.

I am not selective with different genre of movies as long as I have time to watch but I am not priorities to have it even I am busy. I am basing on the stories of the movie. Yes, I agree some movie showing a chick flick form of stories but in some aspect it will entertain to anybody.

I guess I can see his point. The majority of the movie is all sentimental and stuff, not too much action. I don't think romance automatically makes it a girly movie, but if it's more romance than action, it's probably more girly.

me too mostly all I remember is the action and it was the kind of action I liked not just car chases and blood and guts of some action movies. they seem u nreal and TopGun has some reality to it in my thinking

I used to think it was a guy movie, and they just threw a guy in there females could swoon over. Though, I suppose there are a lot of guys who see any form of romance in a movie as it becoming a guy movie. Personally, I would think it depends on the degree of it. Was Sin city a "chick flick"? There was many scenerios of love and near romance, but I am sure most females would not classify it as such. I think it just depends on the person, the scenerio and if someone wants to watch a certain movie or not.

i thought from side action is action movie with pilot action in the air, cooled enough and there is romantic side which is lots of my girl of friends like this things, and how cool the actor, you know .. hahaha ... i think it's great movies because it's action that i like when in the air by the pilot and pilot help other pilot and savely arrival on the boat.

It was a very good movie. Maybe the bf just doesn't like Tom Cruise.

I recall reading somewhere that back in the day, this Movie was so popular that the US Navy set up recruiting booths to capitalize on the "I feel the Need..The Need for Speeed!" mentality of moviegoers coming out from screenings! Me,I'd consider the Movie an All rounder..not that I'm a big fan of it..but it had Romance,Bromance, and Action..and "Take my breath away" was a big chart hit from the soundtrack..

Ya, I think it is a girly movie. But one men can get into too. I think it had alot of girlier parts to it that would have been alot different if made as a man's movie. Having romance in it could disqualify it. I do think it is mainly a girly movie but as you said one that guys can get into too.

Really? The romance is a relatively small part of it?

Its been a while since I saw it and romance isn't just between a man and a woman. It has other meaning.

I think we can't blame your BF of saying it because he might observed that many girls preferred to watch that film over and over again so he judged it of being so. A film is a girly thing for me if it portrays topics on body and masculinity. I think I have to agree with your BF on that.

I think I would agree with your BF here. When I first saw this movie, way back in the day, I thought it was such a cool movie. I think it even made me want to dress like Maverick - white shirt, leather jacket, ripped jeans, etc. The more I look into it now, I think IS a girly movie. I think the singing is what bugs me about it. Or maybe I just couldn't stand Tom Cruise!

I actually don't have a problem with him if he is in fact gay. It's his scientology beliefs that I'm having trouble with.

I kind of thought of it as a couples movie, but I guess it is more on the girly side. I hadn't thought of it that way. My husband said it is a guy movie so you have one man agreeing with you, and me agreeing with the girlie said.
