Lego. It's a Menace.

My kids love lego. It supports their creativity and gives them hours of fun. But I do think the stuff is a menace to have in your home. If you've ever stepped on a piece in bare feet in the middle of the night when you're desperately trying to get to the loo without waking the rest of the household you'll know what I mean. Anyone else had that experience? I quite often find the stuff in my bed under the duvet, in the washing basket and, rather oddly, in the litter in the chicken shed. Do you think it has legs?

Lego having legs? Sounds like it should, lol! I remember these when my kids were little and yes, I have stepped on them once in a while. All I can say is "OUCH!" and "CLEAN these up!". I think they should make lego's with a little magnet on them so you can take a wand and voila, they're gone into a pile.

Maybe the little legs could be trained to head back to the box at bedtime?

HaHa! Sounds like a good idea to me! The little legs remind me of an old antique postcard I have with Christmas presents running around with skinny little legs on them. But, anyways, kids will be kids and they love these little plastic fun toys and build so many cute things with them.

You could patten that Kash! That's a great idea for quick and easy pick up of those scraggly legos that somehow never are found until your foot finds it.

We just have to weigh whether the pain in the feet is enough to over look and add in that it fosters there creative minds...

Yes it does keep them busy when they're young and even sometimes when they're older like around 7 or 8! We don't have many "cool" pieces but I just saw a huuuuge amount a friend bought like 10,000 pieces! And those had a ton of "cool" pieces. There shouldn't be too many fights with that many!

i cannot remember having that much of an issue with lego but i only have two and we had a big bin that held the lego and the bin got moved from room to room when the girls were playing with it. of course, they are teenagers now and we finally gave the lego away.

GreenMoo,thanks for this discussion,i think its a kid thing to just litter the whole house with legos plus their toys,i threaten my kids i will throw them away until i realise that i bought them with cash.you wonder why when they are done they cant pack them in their container.i think we just have to go through this phase in their life.

Well my partner still can't pick things up and put them away, so it's obviously a long phase he's going through!

I love the lego, despite constantly collecting it up. It's such a great toy, and one which they enjoy playing with for hours at a time.

I totally understand what you mean.. My sister assigned a specific place for my nephew to play with legos, so that the pieces are not all over the house.. I think assigning a particular room or area where kids can be all creative without creating trouble for the rest is the best idea..

unfortunately our designated spot is at the end of my bed, hence the night time agonies!

lol.. Then the designated spot is the culprit. You must consider some other spot where you will be spared off of such pain.. you could create a bounded space in the room only (with those detachable thigh high planks..)

It must. How else would it get places? Certainly not because the kids leave it lying about...

If I move it, I need to pay very close attention to where I put each piece. Each piece is precious, and life cannot go on if that particular one needed for that particular model sneaks off.

No they wouldn't do that, they'd be nice little helpful kiddies and put them all back in their boxes....

I haven't bothered to get the kids any legos in awhile because the pieces just go missing so quickly.

hi did either of you ever have a favorite jiog saw p uzzle set and find it has some cru cial pieces missing? I will always wonder just where they escaped as we looked every where for them and no pices. Sor of ruins the fun of putting it together to have a fe w crucial pices go missing. lol lol

I prefer lego to many other toys simply because if the odd piece does go walkabout it doesn't spoil the game. They can just build something else. We have a massive box collected second hand.

Hiya GM, Not so much Lego treading in the middle of the night no but I have found other obstacles yes like those scooter things for babies left in the passage way and how I never went flying I will never know it was pitch black as well lol. Another was when a certain somebody left a chair right in the middle of the living room God knows when as I always tidy up before going to sleep. I missed it by a miracle but did not miss the fright it gave me same as with the scooter. I love Lego we should all still be playing with that and board games oh well do not want to go on.xxx PS:I have trod on the pieces during the daytime yes but they do stick into the soles of your feet and how.xxx

I'm glad my kids don't have dolls, as those hurt like hell when you tread on them. All hard and pointy.

Hiya GM, Now that is a good point but I have never had to buy dolls for mine being all boys but I have trod on a few He Men And Skeletors by accident of course. I found the Dinosaurs the least offensive as they were so well made too. He Man and Skeletor lived to see another day though.xxx

By the way neither He Man or Skeletor shouted out lol they are made of tough stuff and that is why they are He Men and Skeletors. Just kidding trod on a few small cars too always shoved them under the beds but somehow they would find their way out again.xxx

I have two young boys and they do have their lego collection. It's always exciting for them (and even me) to get them out of the box, and build whatever it is supposed to be. But after it's been built it, they loose interest and it gets broken down piece by piece until it all ends up in their big lego bin. I have stepped on it a few times, and it IS a menace!

the trouble is that once it's broken down it's so hard to find all the 'right' pieces in with all the others. Mine have just as much fun after though by rebuilding it as something else.

My granddaughter has loved it before. She used the plastic bricks to assemble and construct all kinds of objects. How come your children would scatter them about? Did they use them for making something when they lay on the bed?

I have no idea how they get in my bed, but I find them there quite often. I reckon the kids have them stuck in their clothes and pockets and just shed them as they walk about.

I agree with. My daughter has blocks and I love the fact that they are open ended toys. Things like that they can play with often and not get bored with like a lot of toys that are battery operated, and have a specific purpose. Her blocks aren't that small but I can imagine how painful that would be. I often find her little hair clips like butterfly ones and end up stepping on those. That hurts like crazy as well.

We had a fabulous set of multicoloured wooden blocks when the kids were younger, and I recently rediscovered them and gave them to a friend for her new grandson. It's nice to think that now someone else will be creating new adventures with them.

Yeah blocks are great for kids. I hope to buy a wooden set some time in the future. I would like for my daughter to have two sets. One that she can play with downstairs and one for upstairs. It will keep me from having to keep going up and downstairs for them. When she gets older I'm sure she will enjoy a lego set.

My son loves his legos. He got a lot for Christmas at least three different sets. I have him store all the legos n the bedroom. They will find their way out into the living room. They are a nuisance. Sure do wish we had a playroom for them.

My son loved those legos. Legos are a great way for kids to be creative. yes, i understand might be a problem having them all over the house there. But I think its well worth it. A great learning toy there. Take care...

I have still got the indentation of what a piece of lego did to my knee when I knelt on it all those years back. Mind you most of the time mum would hoover bits of lego up, this one piece must have eluded the vaccuum cleaner and I just happened to kneel down in the wrong place. I loved lego and it gave me hours and hours of entertainment, when you are the only child and have to entertain yourself on your own lego is the perfect companion.

Lego is brilliant. My kids love it, and it works for pretty much all ages too. I could never hoover it up!

When my kids were young and playing with the big Legos it wasn't so bad. When they got older and has Legos of all sizes I swear those things did grow legs and worse still, they breed!! It was a never-ending battle to get them all picked up--the boys put them away but there were always stragglers lurking about in the strangest places and strategically positioned for my bare feet to land on at least one in the middle of the night or when I was hurrying to do something! But I love them! The boys and I would play with them together for hours, building cities and garages for their cars, space ships, castles and all sorts of things. I think if I child had Legos and nothing else they could nearly always be entertained as there are so many ways to use them and so many things to be built!

I love the idea of lego breeding. In fact, if it did, I would not have to worry about the odd piece sprouting legs and rehoming itself under something as it would be constantly renewing itself! I consider lego to be the best toy we own and it keeps the kids occupies for hours. They are better at it than me though, so I rarely play!

No human children here, so we don't have any Lego. Although, I have been tempted to buy some for myself, since I never really had them as a child except for one paltry "starter kit." However, I think that I shall resist that temptation and hold off until I have children. However, cat toys can be about as much fun. That is part of the reason why I always have slippers/house shoes on when I am walking about in here.

My cats do all their playing outdoors with their dinners of mice, so thankfully I have no cat toys on the floors. I'd buy the lego and get it out of your system! If you wait until you've got children you might find that they won't let you near it!

I spent many hours trying to pick it all up.I have also stepped on it and boy does it hurt. Those tiny figure in the packs used to drive me round the bend trying to get the hats on those little figures. My son is 19 and sometimes I long to step on that flipping stuff in the night on the stairs, floating down the loo.in my make up bag ect ,funny what you miss.

Getting the hats on? It's getting the hats OFF that I always get asked to help with. Normally after they've been trodden on and are a funny shape!

Yeah, I feel your pain! When I was kid, my younger cousins used to have legos all over the floor. Sometimes when I run around the house, I would step on one and I would yell out loud for the pain!!! Happened not just once.. Lesson here is to look at where you are stepping and to always clean up after the kids are done playing.

I like this toy, once made for relieving from stress. When I was oveload across the country, I used to go out and buy legos in my flat. Taking all day long assembling these components into a good craft. As the contract ended, I had made a complete police station on top my table and took a picture of it. Then I posted in my blog, a piece of craft made by me.
