Do you have Carpeting or Hard Wood Floors?

I would love to redo this room over again, I did it maybe 10+ years ago and then something terrible happened and it kind of put a damper on something I wanted to be better. So I didn't ever attempt to fix it up anymore. The carpet in here really needs a deep steam cleaning but no way to get that done it seems. I might end up having to get some new carpeting or just go without it. I like hard wood floors, but they can be slippery. One lady I knew of fell and injured herself badly on a hard wood floor. Are those hard wood floors worth it? I think they look beautiful though.

If this were my own house it would be carpet. As of now it is hard wood. Some people like it because then they don't like to vacuum or can't afford a steam cleaner. " All you gotta do is sweep and go" Thing is, wood flooring gets extremely filthy and can not just be swept and done with. If you're one of those people who are scared to wash it, don't bother. I do know people that never wash their wood floor. They will flip out if any liquid gets near it even though there are cleaners made for the purpose. I've never encountered a slippery hardwood floor. There might be something they on using on it that causes this.

I have reclaimed solid oak flooring, in living and bedroom, granite in the bathroom and kitchen. I do not like carpets, they are dirty all the best, urban

Oak flooring is not slippery if you oil instead of varnishing it all the best, urban

I think hardwood floors are so pretty but my experience has been they are slippery also. We have carpeting throughout our entire house. Even bought a washable carpet for one bathroom which I had installed by a professional. I love it. Plan to eventually put carpeting in the other two bathrooms also. At one point, when our kids were little, the kitchen was carpeted too. It was great and really didn't get all that dirty. It was indoor/outdoor carpeting. Our computer room needs more than just cleaning since I spend a good part of my time in this room. The carpeting needs to be replaced and I will get around to it eventually. I would rather keep my feet warm anytime than to be barefooted on a hardwood floor.

I have hardwood floors and big rugs in the main rooms and smaller rugs in the bedrooms. They are not highly polished boards but they are shiny and I'm careful not to use polishes which are slippery. I use cedar oil in water to clean and preserve them and they are lovely. I'm not getting carpet because I don't think you can ever get it really clean without a lot of effort and expense.

My daughter has hardwood floors and actually, it's not slippery at all. Maybe when it's first done and polished up? She cleans it all the time but doesn't wax it or nothing. I love hardwood floors but I also like a bit more quiet, which rugs muffle the sound. I probably (if I had hardwood floors) would end up putting down a large area rug and brighten up the place with color.

It could be that, perhaps she used too much polish and just couldn't get a grip on the floor and wore socks. I do think they can be noisy if you are wearing high heels but all floors are.

There usually aren't many problems with hard wood floors being slippery. Yes, in a rare event that you do end up falling on one is not as painless as on carpet. The only reason I could think of that would cause you to fall is running around the house and sliding with socks on.

I'm not sure if she did any sliding, perhaps she must have polished the floor and used too much polish perhaps? I just don't hear of many accidents like that either. Maybe she was just using the incident as another excuse as well?

In our old house we had carpet everywhere except the bathroom it was the cheap tile. Now that we have the new house in TN everything is hardwood. It's beautiful but also very cold. We thought about redoing some of it in carpet and keeping only the living room hardwood but financials are making it difficult.

I know some people who cleaned their hardwood floors and added Pledge or furniture polish to make them shine, causing the women to slip and fall on their floors. Furniture polish is for furniture, not your floors. One of the women tried to talk me into using some pledge on my floor to make it shine--one of the ones who did the same and fell! lol. Cleaning the floors make them shine and I have a few coats of polyurethane on them to protect them and they shine a bit with the polyurethane. I love my hardwood floors, they are easy to maintain and much cleaner than carpet. I vacuum my floor because it's easier AND more effective than sweeping. Carpet is pretty, but it is nasty--it holds dirt. Steam cleaning causes damage to the floor beneath the carpet as the water ends up sitting on the floor. Steam cleaning a carpet isn't as sanitary as people think it is. Carpets can host a lot of nasties. It's best to get throw rugs that can either be washed or if they are cheap, thrown out every few years and replaced. Unfortunately I can't use the throw rugs because I have cats. The newest one pees on them, and they all shed too much.

In the old place we were in we had hard wood floors. I loved it because it was so easy to clean. Now we have carpet which I think is a pain. It can be difficult to keep it clean and no it's necessary to have to vacuum more. Yeah hard wood floors are slippery and cold during the winter time but I like them.

Whatever you decide upon it should be something that suits your way of life. If you go for carpets then there is a problem keeping them clean. But it is good to walk on soft floors if you live in a cold climate and you don't have any animals shedding their fur on them. Hygiene is an issue with carpets, but the comfort of them cannot be overlooked. Wooden floors are easy to clean, a wipe with a damp cloth and you are done. They are hygienic and they look good. I have had both and the downside for me with the hard floor was that it was noisy when people walked on it. Mine were upstairs so we heard every step above us. The thing I loved most was that I could clean them so quickly and did not have to use a vacuum cleaner. Why not have both hard floors and scatter mats - just ensure that they are good quality as it is true that hard floors are slippery and light mats will be constantly on the move.

I have hard woold floors in my new house, it is beautiful but it is hard to clean. But i do believe that carpet is more difficult to clean, you have to wash it every month.

I think it's much safer to have hard woods rather than cements or marbles especially if you have kids around, our stairs is made out of wood- carpeted my niece fell accidentally from playing, the good thing is, it doesn't hurt him that much since he doesn't cry that much but I have to agree carpets are no good and it can easily attracts dirt and other stuff if not been clean most of the time.

We have hard wood floors in our famliy room. We had carpet in there but the kids were quick to ruin that. Koolaid is very hard to get out of beige carpet. The floor is beautiful cold in the winter but an area rug fixes that. Its not too slipper. The only one that ever falls on it is our dog. She can't seem to get the hang of trying to run across the floor without falling.
