my 9-year old niece was bitten by a dog. i just found out when she was scared to enter out compound because of our two dogs. she's been coming in and out of the compound so i really found i weird. i asked her if she already got an anti-tetanus vaccine and the anti-rabies vaccine. she said "no". she was just brought to the "albularyo" or herbal doctor who sucked the venom through the wound (i really don't know how it was done). actually i was bitten by our dog last may that's why i was quite familiar with rabies. we were supposed to go to an alternative healer but my uncle said i should just go to the hospital and take the anti-rabies vaccines. they may be quite expensive butit's guaranteed to be effective than some traditional practices.

It is really advisable to let your niece have anti-rabies vaccination. We van never tell, since some dogs are not vaccinated. I hope she would be fine.

How many days since she was bitten? I guess you need to take her to the hospital for a better safety. We know that rabies don't have effect at an early stage - hope your niece is in good condition.

if your dog does not have rabies then you do not need the shots, if your dog has rabies it will die soon enough on its own. Sorry your neice got bitten and I have never heard of sucking the venom through the wound. I am not aware of any venom that a dog carries.

They get rabies from another animal biting them.

well, i really am not familiar with the dog that bit my niece. so can't really say if it has anti-rabies injections. i'm talking about rabies as the venom in dogs.

Once a dog had put some scratches on me. During those times I did not mind it. I did not make sue of nay medicines or anything else. I don't find any problem. I feel I am bit lucky barbecue i was not infected or I don't have many problem. I did not put much attention to the scratches because it was the ones made by a dog which was looked and feed by a house keeper.

the doctors said even scratches carry rabies. but since the fog that bit you seems to be taken care of and i assume it's vaccinated, i think it's pretty clean.

That must indeed be a terrifying experience for your niece. I hope she does get the proper treatment. Natural herbal medicine has its place but I think a tetanus shot is necessary after a dog bite. Were the dogs now contained and under control. Personally, if a dog bites once, that is it for the dog. The dog needs re-training or something to avoid that happening again. Hope your niece is comforted and learns to know that most dogs don't bite and to not be afraid. Be careful but not live in fear.

they didn't even bother to give her a tetanus shot.

you must immediately see your doctor or a nearby hospital instead of curing it while applying some home remedies. you should not take it too lightly since it can have serious repercussions.

I wonder what the healer did to you niece. Dogs don't have venom but do carry things that can cause an infection. A puncher wound, like a dog bit has to be watched very carefully to make sure no infection gets in it. As for rabies, i don't know how often that shows up in your country. Here it's rare, most of our dogs have been vaccinated against it. But if you get it the chances of living are slim. The least that should be done is to watch the dog who bit her for any sign of illness. Blessings

my bite before has a punctured wound. in fact some tissues came out from my wound. i really didn't see my niece's bite up close. well, it's been more than a week when i asked my niece if she was feeling something different, she said none. i don't know about the dog since she was bitten in her aunt's house which is like a ride away from our place.

When I was really young I was also attacked by a dog. I was around six at the time I believe and I was at my friend's house when I tried to pet their big Chow that they had. As I went up to pet it the thing jumped on top of me and clawed my face. I ended up with about fourteen stitches and they also had to give me the shots into the side of the face. I am not afraid of dogs though since that experience and I never really had any fear of dogs even after that happened while I was still young. Maybe your niece will be able to get over her fear of dogs with time. I'm hoping she will because there are plenty of really friendly and nice dogs out there that I'm sure she would love to spend some time with.

one of our dogs bit me so maybe that's why she got really scared. i'm happy that you were not traumatized with what happened to you. the bites and scratches on the head is really critical since it's closer to the brain. that's what i heard.

Hi friend! You should suggest to her parents to let her be checked up by a doctor. Sometimes, the effect might not appear immediately. I remember my mother's student who was infected by rabies, they thought it has no effect but after five year that was the time that the symptoms appear. Too late. Have a nice day!

i suggested it to her grandmother since i rarely see her parents. well, at least i reminded them. it's their decision. i just wish the child won't suffer in the end.

Thanks for sharing this discussion. Well that is very difficult to hear about the dog bite and i hope whenever someone is bitten by any dog no time should be wasted to consult a doctor and take an anti rabies vaccine otherwise it would be dangerous for our survival. I think money should be counted whenever such things happen and u also take the vaccine as soon as possible. What say?

i agree with you. anyways, there are some government programs that could possible help with the expenses. what's with the money if you lose the life of your loved one?

It is really advisable that a dog bite victim must have the proper vaccines. No amount of money can ever replace that young girl's health. But since you're not her parent, you can only do little about it but I hope you reminded her parents of the need to go see a doctor.

I never heard of that herbal remedy for a dog bite where sucking venom can cure the person so I will say that you should take her to the hospital for the proper treatment and get her anti rabies vaccine. You should not take chance with that thing. Only believe in proven methods. Don't you think that she deserves the best treatment out there.

there's this remedy where the practitioner used the horn of a deer to suck the venom. sorry i'm not really familiar with it. i just heard it from the people in the hospital where i got the vaccines.
