My husband is very stubborn. He paid no attention to what he put into his mouth, even after I warned him time and time again. Now he walks around sad because the doctor informed him that he suffers of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. How should I prepare good food for him?

vegetable.. and nothing more. All of you however will be restricted to vegetables if that will be the case. don't buy food that will increase his cholesterol and blood pressure. I heard garlic is good for high blood pressure, so leeks can be a good food for him.

yes, pumpkin can also be eaten however, i think since sugar is a no no.. just steam pumpkin will do I am not sure about that. Garlic to be swallowed but, that's too smelly isn't it, it might cause bad breath, LOL.

It's when a person chew the garlic - then it leaves a bit of a smell. Just swallow it does wonders - that is really true! Oh yes, and perhaps I can add a little cinnamon to the pumpkin...

Garlic is excellent. I can cut it in three and he can even swallow it whole. Leeks and green peppers and onions are high on the list. I think raw is best. Is any vegetable good? I am not sure about pumpkin?

I am not a doctor, but I can offer some valuable information. Your husband should start his day with old fashioned oatmeal. It has been proven that oatmeal will help to reduce the ldl (bad chlesterol). Oatmeal is a healthy carb or complex carb which we all need. You want to avoid the one minute oatmeal, because those tend to be processed. He will want to eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. He can eat egg whites (the cleanest form of protein and most easily absorbed by the body). You can save the yolks or do whatever you want with them. I eat my egg whites with my oatmeal in the form of a pancake. You should switch his salt from table salt to sea salt. Sea salt is naturally iodized (we need iodized salt to keep our thyroid functioning). Sea salt has a lot of minerals that you will not find in regular table salt. He should switch from dairy milk to unsweetened almond milk. Avoid all butter and cottage cheese (all dairy products really). Almond milk has more calcium and Vitamin D than cows milk. Coconut milk is also a great option. You will want to make sure to use whole grains whenever possible. Avoid anything that says bleached (white bread, pasta, etc..) Hope this helps.

Also never overlook the importance of daily exercise. We all should be getting in 30 minutes (walking at best and some strength training) every day or at least five days a week.

Hurray for me! I am already doing that and he enjoys his oatmeal each morning! Thank you for sharing about the salt. I will go look for sea salt. How can he enjoy egg without the yellow? Grrrr, that does not look right... Luckily he is not too fond of pasta, so that one is easy. You have given me great advice Arieles - thank you.

Give him plenty of fruit and veg.Everything low fat. Chicken or turkey are very good and low in fat.Stop using salt as that will send his blood pressure right up.No junk food at all.No cakes and biscuits.Get him to walk and exercise every day.His cholesterol will soon come down once he cuts out salt junk food.and fills up on fruit.Steam his veg.Don't fry anything.Grill food instead of frying.Boiled food like veg and potato'.If you do these things he should start feeling better fast.Porridge is also very good for breakfast it will fill him up and low in salt. You have to feel sorry for him.I had the same problem with my husband, ate what he wanted and ended up with gall bladder problems he has to have low fat foods ,but he still has to much salt.I buy low salt and hope that won't kill him.Men are such a pain. You have my sympathy. It is us who have to pick up the pieces I swear they never grow up properly. If I gave my husband healthy food he used to have a fit.He used to act like a five year old.A few gall stones and he grew up quickly. He always eat fresh fruit and veg and he still does not drink enough water,What can you do in the end.

He loves fruit, and we should buy more in the future. Food without salt will really not be nice... What else do you think I can use instead of table salt? I did not know that I could buy low salt? will have to go check it out. I have a steamer and can easily put his fish/chicken and vegetables in it. Preparing food will be more difficult now, and I will have to explain to my son how important it is that we ALL start living healthier. These two are so stubborn and will continue eating junk food unless I put my foot down! Thank you for your help.

I am happy that he loves fruit. That already helps. We will just all have to learn to enjoy bland food... Salt is the killer with high cholesterol. I just need to convince our young son to eat with us so that hubby do not get tempted. I told them that I will not prepare two sets of food at night.

High cholesterol and high blood pressure can be helped with meds and some diets, but some people just have high blood pressure and make high cholesterol as part of their constitution. The web can help you a lot if you scan there about special diets for those ailments. After a while you will be able to cook something that is appealing to him and yet good for his needs.

I think you need to limit fatty foods. You can start grilling or boiling the food you give him. Avoid fried foods because it's the fat that will be bad for him. Avoid cooking fatty foods.

Someone told me that I should cut off the fatty parts of the meat, but you know what, even when I did that, I can still see a lot of oil in the pan when I fry a piece of meat.

How often does he exercise? Changing habits is probably going to be difficult for your husband. I hope he exercise. One key here is awareness. When I was living as a broke college student years ago, I don't have the luxury of eating steak or buying a bunch of red meat. Sometime, I went through a period of starving. What used to be a fatter or rounder person, I started to lose weight. Somehow, I started eating less and less pork. Growing up, I started to avoid fatty stuff in pork. Overtime, I read about how pork and red meat can cause health problems for aging people. In recent years, I started to eat less and less beef. I have considered going vegetarian, but it's difficult when I live around family that cooks and have the ability to feed any members of the family (if you know what I mean). Going vegetarian and adjusting to a certain diet have become a personal idea for me. I like food in general, but I prefer to eat something that makes me healthy. At the same time, I try not to be uptight about how many calories going inside, whether this or that could ruin my health. As long as I balance it with exercises and some consumption, I'd like to think that I'm going to be alright.

There are many ways to exercise. I'm not an expert in this thing. He can sign up for a gym membership. Of course, he might need to pay monthly fees. He could also get a treadmill or something alike.

Hi garson. You are very disciplined, that's for sure. My husband walks a lot at his work, but it is clearly not enough. Someone told me that a person exercise until he sweat - that's when things are really happening in the body. Lately he has become more aware of what he puts into his mouth. He is taking this thing serious now.

First say no to fatty foods. I think you can cook using olive oil. Avoid all kinds of junk foods. regular exercise including weight exercises are required to counter the menace. At least for one year, strict diet regime and exercise are required to bring the body back in control.

Hello dee77, you have to avoid cooking food that are way too many cholesterol and fat that would give troubleto his high blood pressure. he should have listened, but when a person is stubborn, he should know what's getting to him. i hope he can survive this blood pressure and probably get some exercise to keep him loosing sweat and unwanted waste in the body

It is summer now in Cape Town, so he sweats a lot - even without the extra exercise! This is a huge project - finding new recipes - and I will have to start looking at preparing food in a new and creative way.

If you've learned that your husband is suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol then the best kind of diet that you can go on in your household is a heart healthy diet. In doing this, you are going to need to prepare more fresh fruits and vegetables. You need to limit the amount of cholesterol that is in the foods that you prepare. Also, though he isn't suffering from heart problems right now, you should also start to limit the amount of sodium that is in your diet.

I am cutting on sodium - for sure. Today I heard that Himalayan salt is the one to go for. Why are all the healthy stuff so very expensive?

Eating a healthy diet and regular exercise can help to lower the level of cholesterol in your blood. Adopting healthy habits, such as eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising, will also help to prevent your cholesterol levels from becoming high in the first place.Changing what you eat can lower your cholesterol and improve the millions of fats floating through your bloodstream. For a low-cholesterol diet, toss the butter, trans fat margarines, and polyunsaturated oil. Replace them with canola oil, olive oil, or plant sterol spreads. Start your day with oatmeal. Experts agree this is one of the top cholesterol-lowering superfoods.

To lower cholesterol, or break it down a person needs to change their lifestyle completely, for sure. It will be difficult, but when I look around me and see all the men we have lost over the past year because of heart attacks and high cholesterol, it is alarming! He loves mayonnaise over his salad, and that will also stop now.

First you should talk to him on what are the foods that he likes to eat, that is low in fat. Then, convince him by cooking veggies and eating lots of fruits. And don't forget to encourage him to exercise more or maybe you can go brisk walking with him at any time convenient to both of you. It should always be a concerted effort of the both of you, to make it more enjoyable.

I told him yesterday that I will support him 100%. I will eat what I prepare for him as well. We have a lovely beach - not too far from home. Perhaps we could go walk two, or three evenings a week. I will do it with him, and we will both benefit.

We also want to do it the natural way. I heard that cayenne pepper over the food helps in reducing high blood pressure. I bought a few packets and use enough of it over the food every day.

Some people are so hard headed, the outcome will be frustrating. The high cholesterol can lead to risk factor for having embolism and will affect arteries that can lead to brain attack or heart attack, it will trigger for being hypertensive. So we need to be cautious in our health especially if we are not getting younger.

He will have to exchange his sofa now for something more active! He does walk a lot at work, but he could do more over the week-ends. Eating less fatty food will not help - we will have to cut down 100%.

I have had a heart attack through not looking after my diet and it has all but ruined my health now. I get tired easily and find it hard to do tasks around the house and garden that I used to enjoy. I eat properly now, with plenty of oily fish and very low fat every day. I also get as much exercise as possible as my energy allows. It is all very important and perhaps if you tell your husband what has happened with me because I didn't look after myself, then maybe he will take notice. I eat a very low fat diet, no sugar products whatsoever - they are the worst things to eat. It wasn't easy, but I got used to it now. I know I won't get my health back fully, but I can feel better than I would otherwise.. _Derek

Thank you so much derek_a. Sorry to hear that you had a heart attack. I am glad that you are now much better. It is sad that we only start taking care of our health after a wake-up call, hey. But at least now you know how to do things better, and that is very good. My husband walks a lot at work, so he gets his exercise each day. I am responsible for supper each evening, and will concentrate on green vegetables more and cut out fatty products as much as possible.

Well now that he is very much aware and scared of what he is going through now, I think it will be easier for you to tell him what he needs to do. As a wife, you must really really look after the things he eat. If possible you always be the one preparing the food for him. But other than food, a good exercise will really do the trick. Do something fun and at the same time help you burn all those calories. A healthy diet and a good exercise can really go a long way. Do it together, so he won't feel alone and obliged.

I feel so responsible right now, because I am preparing the food. The thing is that he likes rich, spicy food, which I know has never been good for his health - the entire family's health. I continued giving to him what he liked... He is very vulnerable now that he knows that he could get a heart attach if he refuses to listen and change his lifestyle. So I pray that this wake-up call will help him work with me towards a healthier life.

Exactly what we will be doing. He walks every day, but I will see that there are now more fruit and vegetables for him each day. This man would buy a packet, or two of chips whenever he was in the shop. He would enjoy it in front of the TV at night... so unhealthy! I suppose I will have to change the chips with popcorn (without the salt!)

Just try to avoid fat as much as possible. He should have a little heart healthy fat each day. He can get that from olive oil, flaxseed oil or even peanut butter. I used to have high cholesterol, but it's been normal for over a year now when I changed my eating habits. I rarely eat beef at all, and only an ounce or two of chicken a day. Meat is more of a condiment for me instead if a main course. You can look online how to prepare heart healthy meals.

He wanted a slice of peanut butter sandwich yesterday, but his friend told him that it was extremely harmful. I have crushed the flaxseed and will add a teaspoon over his oats in the morning. I was told that flaxseed as it is, is of no use - it needs to be crushed. I will invest in avocado pears as well.

I would first consult with his doctor. They deal with this sort of thing every day and you will get much more straight forward detailed information this way. Also he might need a prescribed medication; my dad takes meds for his cholesterol and it helps a lot. But yea, eating healthy and exercise (even if it's just walking around the block) are usually the first things doctors will mention that are the most important. But if you need medication it's worth it, life is too short as it is!

He walks at work a lot each day. I am happy for that at least. The doctor did prescribe medication, but I know that he needs to follow a proper diet as well. I will have to have a complete change of mind in preparing food from now on. I just hope he does not cheat at work by eating the wrong stuff!
