The red hat that got a smiling response

A recent discussion about being cheerful reminded me of a hat that I used to wear when it was raining. It was a red plastic one which covered my hair and kept the rain off my face. Whenever I wore that hat people smiled at me! Did I look cheerful in the rain, or ridiculous in the hat? Whatever the reason I loved the smiles that came my way when this hat was on my head.
Have you experienced a response to a particular item of clothing that made you pleased that you were wearing it?

Hi 41CombedaleRoad,
Not myself I'm petty bland jeans and teeshirt girl. But my daughter is a hat maniac. She always gets alot of attention for her hats. She wears a different one everyday. I learned to crochet so that I could keep giving her more hats. She has some sote bought but a lot of them are hand made. When she goes to school or church people always stop her to see what hat she has on that day. Doesn't even matter what time of year it is she just loves her hats. She says it makes people happy to see them especailly the crazier ones.

i think you're both wonderful. you for learning to crochet to make her unique hats, and she willing to wear crazy hats to brighten someone's day, even if only for a moment (which might be just what someone needs).
so how did this habit start and where do you get your hot, er, hat ideas?

my sister sends over magazines and i read about a woman who likes buying funny shoes, even gumboots, because she says it makes the residents in the elderly home where she works laugh at how silly they look. i think it shows how kind you are to do such things.

I have this blue knitted scarf that a friend of mine made for my birthday years ago and every one likes it. I also have this burgundy blouse with so many buttons that I have to button up, but my friends love it when I wear it. It is now to big for me, and will probably give it away. I have not told me that those buttons drive me crazy though.

When I had a working holiday visa for Australia I did some jobs and one was very amusing. I had to dress up as a koala and collect money for the Wilderness Society. I did a day shift and an evening shift. Children smiled when they saw me and they rushed over to put coins into my tin. Drinkers out at the bars also looked happy when they saw me.
I like the sound of your red plastic rain hat and the people's responses.

I think its because the rain is so drab and a bright red hat reminds people of sunshine and it makes them smile. I would smile too. I usually try to wear the color that fits my mood, I like the color red when I'm happy and I usually wear black or grey if I'm feeling blue. A red umbrella is also a welcomed sight on a raining day. I think they should sell only red umbrellas because a raining day needs a splash of color.

The one thing that comes to mind would be these awesome pair of fuchsia boots I had as a child. I mean these things were BRIGHT. But then again, it was the early 90's, ha ha ha. They were actually called "shocking pink", but my dad called them "the fuchsia boots".
My classmates loved them. My grandmother was the one who picked them out, so she always wanted to see me in them during cold weather. I only got a year or two out of them, 'cause I grew so quickly. In any case, they were like magical shoes. They were an extreme pop of color with all of my cold-weather outfits. Unlike my room at the time, I did my very best to keep them clean. :-)
I've noticed that the style of boot and the color are both in style again, but I'm not sure I want to wear another pair! My style has changed a bit since then, but the memories will always be there.

I remember once at work I had this argument with this woman at work and she really 'got' to me, I went home really upset, trouble is I am very sensitive and take it to heart, well the next day I put on this bright yellow long sleeved shirt which I had bought and decided it would make me feel good, I love bright colours, well it seemed to give me the edge and when I went to work the woman came up to me and complimented me on the shirt, she was being serious she gave me a warm smile, you look really good she said, that made me feel sooo good, argument from yesterday, forgotten!

I really don't recall a situation where a particular item of clothing causes any smiles or anything. When my daughter and I are together sometimes we are silly and so we get attention that way. That is the only thing I can think of. They have the new winter hats that tie under the chin at Walmart. They have faces embroidered on the top of cats, dogs, cows, etc. I was thinking of getting one. A 61 year old woman wearing one might cause some weird looks. We'll see.

Indeed, when we see people look at us with a smile or admiration, we become so happy and confident, my friend.
Wearing a new outfit at the office and when your office mates reacts with Wow, or It suits you, makes you more motivated to wear well matched even if not new anymore outfits.

lol I love your attitude. You don't care if you look ridiculous or look cheerful - all that mattered is that you made other people smile. I like that attitude. :)
One time, when I was a lot younger and working in a department store. It was the Christmas season. I wore a bright, red blazer as we didn't wear uniforms in that department store, just were required to wear nice clothes and wore a pin with our name. The owner's son was visiting the department store. He was with the store manager and a group of other VIPs. He broke away from all the other VIPs and came up to me. He shook my hand and said that he just had to shake my hand and say that he liked my bright, cheerful red blazer.
Perhaps, he thought it was very cheerful Christmas color or perhaps, he thought it was a little over the top. I am not sure, but I was the only employee that he shook hands with that day.
He was rich and very good looking. Glad he liked my red blazer.
