You don't need to buy one. Avast, AVG and Avira all do free versions which are perfectly satisfactory.
I use Avast myself and it is very effective in protecting me from malicious stuff.

The free versions are no less effective than the paid versions of all of these. What you pay for is the 'extras' (like a firewall and other tools which you can find free elsewhere if you need them).

If it has expired, remove it, download AVG Free again (or another - Avast is the one I use) and re-install it. An expired program is unlikely to be any protection at all.

I have AVG free, but it is expired now, do you think it can still save the window from the viruses?

I don't have an antivirus (well, I don't identify my microsoft security essentials an antivirus in my laptop)
I suggest you Avast or Avira.
They are the most suggested here in our school. They have a good protection also. Maybe they are also free that's why its the one suggested at our school (Did not check them if they're free).

I think avast with trial version is not sufficient because it is installed in some computers, at my work place and they have viruses in it. You said you don't need an anti-virus with the Microsoft security, what does it mean?
I also have genuine windows of the company you named. Does it mean that I don't need the anti-virus?

I think you have answered the question rightly, but I want to know more about your system? What is the brand of your laptop with which you got already installed, I will research about the other by myself.
I think this software is from Microsoft and it will not be free for sure. Thanks for the sharing.

My laptop now is a HP Pavilion, running in Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
The Microsoft Security Essentials was installed before I am running a Windows 7 Laptop. I think it was installed when my laptop was a Windows Vista.
Also, I think that the software is indeed not free. No problem sanjay, glad to help. :)

I used to use Norton because I had a terrible virus on my laptop which wrapped itself around files and was extremely hard to get rid of. My regular McAfee wouldn't even touch it. The McAffee tech even advised me to getG Norton. Now I have AVG free anti-virus and a couple of other things that get rid of temp files, history and such.

I also feel safe with it now, I have this free version of the AVG which is expired now but I don't face any new problem since last two months. There are two possibilities now, one is that the AVG is very good at protecting the computer software or the people have stopped to create any new viruses, what do you think?

I am using Kaspersky anti virus in my desktop and laptop, so far its working so good and did not encounter any problem. The good thing about this anti virus he can detect any malicious doc or virus even without opening the file.

The other good thing is this that I am using the trial version of the AVG which is expired now, and I don't have any issues yet but I am worried a little bit. I want to have top security. I have used the Kaspersky in the past and I think it is good but it makes system a little slow.

Hi friend,
I used many anti-virus programs (AVG, Avaira, Kaspersky, Norton...) The kespersky is better than others but I didn't use it because when I install it to my computer then it works too slowly So I used avaira and it good. hey friend I don't know about this but my friend said that the anti-virus program that comes with Windows 7 is better than all of that anti-virus programs.

Hi Shami, You are right, I also had this lower configuration system and kaspersky made it very slower. It do a lot of tasks frequently, which I think I can control but still it consumes a lot of RAM. I have the AVG trial version, which is expired now, but I don't have any problems till now.

I suggest you Quick Heal Total Security because Quick Heal Total Security is the best anti-virus, not only because it detects every Virus and malware it is because Quick Heal Total Security Anti-Virus detect and clean only Virus and malware where some of Anti-Virus delete some clean files. Choose Quick Heal also if you don't have high specs laptop but if you have at least minimum Intel i3 Processor then you may also choose Bit Defender Anti Virus because, it was slow down my PC when i was using this in low spec (2 GB RAM and Core 2 Duo Processor). So better go for Quick Heal Total Security.

Hi!
I have a netbook with a low capacity, it only has 1 GB of RAM and an Intel atom 1.66 Ghz Processor and i know its a kind of a slow computer that runs windows 7 ultimate but avast anti-virus worked for me, its protection offer is good, even to slow computer like mine.
I just want to answer your question but as far as recommendation is concerned I say Avast.

I found Microsoft Security Essential as best antivirus. It don't use lot of space from your memory. It can only be installed register microsoft Operating System. And it's work really good. You don't have to update it manually it will updated automatically. I hope if you try this you will enjoye it's working.

Even though I have used anti-viruses like Norton and Kaspersky, I felt Kaspersky is best. The reason why I liked is that even if we somehow opened the folder containing any virus, Kaspersky will delete that virus at that very instant itself. The problem with Norton I felt is that we have to run the virus scan every time to detect those and also it requires frequent database updation.

use Symantec Pro. it is worth the price and lasts a lifetime. very light on the memory usage too. stops ALL viruses even hackers attacks on your IP address. lifetime free updates beats all deals out there. never had any problems since I installed this on my system and its been 6 years already.
