I don't know about your own observations regarding how Mathematics is taught in your schools. I am complaining and not satisfied with the way our schools in our country are teaching Math. All those complicated Mathematical formulas actually are useless and will never be used in real life. Mathematics, I believe should be made more functional and useful. Why can't schools come up with a curriculum that would give emphasis on making the kids MONEY SMART? I think if schools can do this, the problem of poverty will be solved little by little. i hope to hear what you think of this.

lol they are needed as the basic for higher studies too, here too you find many who just ignore mathematics, when i go to conduct practical examinations, i ask the students simple addition of numbers with decimal points; most can't too with out calculator if i ask one kilometer is how many millimeters many can't answer too. so sad, i was there in your country as visiting professor, i know the situation well.

That is why, in real life, we only add and subtract, sometimes we multiply and divide and when the figures are big, one can punch the calculator. That's what you do in real life.

Well, they are not useless for higher education and highly scientific and number crunching kid of work. Especially in Engineering, such complicated mathematics are quite useful and the the very fundamental of the machines and technology people are using today. You just say that maybe because you don't actually in need to apply it during your daily life. Such kind of mathematics will never live as long as now to be still taught in schools if they are completely useless. Also, another thing why such hard things are taught in school is to condition students for problem solving skills. Making your brain work hard gives people the right mind exercise and attitude against hard problems. That is an indirect effect of teaching such hard subjects. Just my two cents in.

Hi Agent! I do understand what you are saying here because you are using words. However, when someone uses numbers, I'm off. I will never be able to understand the language of numbers. I think that is only meant for certain types of people.

Oh yes, you can say that such kind of mathematics are not for everybody. They are really for certain types of people. But to describe it as useless, that I would never agree about as I can certainly feel the usefulness of mathematics.

I used to hate trigonometry at school and algebra, and I could never figure out how you could use either in every day life! You can hardly go into a store and ask for b+a and hope to get c. Pythagoras Therum I never got to grips with and they might as well be talking a foreign language. Budgeting would be ideal in the Math curriculum helping people to stretch out their money, economize and frugal living instead of those infuriating equations!

Yes, Wolfie, how about teaching kids about earning or salary and what they are supposed to do with it. How much of it should go for food, savings, etc. Then let them have some figure or amount, ask them to budget the money for a certain item or groceries, whatever. So many ways of making Math more useful and interesting.

When I was a student, maths is one of the most difficult subjects for me. At that time I also thought it was an useless lesson. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't learn it well. Now I think that learning maths probably just wants you to practise your ways to think. It trains your brain.

Problems are part of life. And to live you need to have a good grasp of problem solving skills. That is where mathematics train you to be good at. Problem solving. it conditions your brain that no matter how hard and complex the problem maybe, there is a solution to it. You just have to manipulate variables and be creative with using formula. Same goes with life. No matter how hard or complex the problems are, there is a solution to it. Mathematics help conditioning the mind to think in a problem solving way.

you have a good point. in my opinion, the hard math equations and formulas that are taught in schools are irrelevant in real life and you can never use them when you get out of the real world. when i was in high school, i never understood what those complicated equations and formulas are for and now that i have graduated in college and studying a post graduate degree, i still don't understand these things and i think when i become a professor someday, i will never understand them too. i'd rather teach philosophy, linguistics and literature than math.

Hi I am with you. Actually none of the methods go to my head and always wonder how and why we should write the next step in the same as they say. I never understand the concept. Moreover the teachers are super excellent They themselves dont know many of the methods . How will we learn.

i thought that math lesson in the school is very usefull someday for anyone, for example that you can counting with exellent skill now like 1..2..3..and so on. see, just simple things. But we can not just based on lesson in the school only because it's wide world, so we have to modified it and creative to think with basic thing that we know. School will teaching all basic lesson, because so many thing that we should to learn from we still as a kid right.

I think there should be total revamp on how the subject is handled by teachers in school because majority of the students just don't get it. Are the teachers talking Greek in Math classes?

We can say about it because most of the time students find job far from the field they took up during college. The way of teaching mathematics in our country can be used no like on the way teaches in the school but it helps our students to think deeper and go beyond. So when they encounter easy mathematical problems they will only laugh on it. It's just like solving our own personal problem. We should experience hard problems so we can solve the easy one.

Deeper and hard? What do you mean? I call them useless, time-consuming and costly. They will not laugh at it when they know they will have USE of it in the future and in real life.

"The problem of poverty will be solved little by little." While I believe that courses on personal finances (as well as courses in math, art, music, literature, etc.) should be available for students, I find it funny that someone would think that a high school course in finances is going to cure a societal ill that has numerous root causes--causes that are not within the control of those who are trapped in poverty.

Not just high school. It could be taught in grade school to make kids money smart. The cure is not going to be drastic but slowly, I am sure something good is going to happen in that area.

I never used algebra in my life but I did use ratio and proportion to figure medicine dosages when I worked as a nurse. I only learned algebra to take tests. I don't remember any if it. I think if you are going to be a chemist, a physicist or some kind if technician where they need calculus or statistics or some ither kind of math, it is important to get the basics. In some ways learning is good for learning's sake, whether you use it or not. There is soooo much I don't know that I wish I did have skills in just about everything. I feel like u cheated myself because I don't know a lot about math.

Pointless, I would never even think of what I am missing in that subject because I have never learned to appreciate how it was taught from Grade 1.

Hi cutie I am very poor in maths. I agree the methods which they teach in schools are not at all effective. I think whole of the education pattern should be changed.

You are so correct, Prashu. It is also in the system. In college, more units means more money, and in high school and grade school I notice that Math books are always the thickest and the most expensive. That means there's business there of course.

I have the same problem. I don't think most of the stuff taught in Maths classes are unusable, but kids won't necessarily find the connections with an equation to their real life problems. Instead of plain and boring tasks or these idiotic "Katie's father had three chicken" type of stuff, they should be taught, for example: -to decide whether a bargain is actually worth it or not (like if you buy chips regularly, is an x gram pocket of chips for A dollars more worth it than an Y gram pocket for B dollars) -how to calculate how much money they would have if they took their money into the bank -it could help them manage their time better (like how much time they should spend studying day by day) -for DIY projects, how much I should largen a picture to put it in a photo frame... or anything that is relatable to the kids. But especially the money stuff. It's not that they have to learn from their own mistakes, because no one taught them being money smart in a really logical way.

I think Mathematics is one of the best subjects being taught in high school and even elementary when you mentioned kids. In this way, they will know what line of profession shall they take in college. How can a student say I will become an engineer when he did not try solving complicated math solutions? Might as well ask some education students why they enrolled that course, they would answer, " I hate math". Well at least, they analyzed that they don't want it during the process of teaching math.

All students do not have to be unnecessarily exposed to these useless formulas if it is only to find out what they want to take up in college. There is such a thing as an aptitude test and other tests to know where you can be good at. In a class of 40 I think only 1 or 2 would love to solve these complicated Math processes. It is additional stress and burden on the majority. Why make it hard when there is a simple way of learning it?

I haven't learned maths for several years even if I'm still at school! But for me I kind of long for learning it again, as I did in junior and senior high. I think it's good for the development of one's inteligence. I hope you could find some interest in it and get good grades. Good luck:)

I'm done with school by the way and I am only using the simplest addition and subtraction now. I have no need of all those confusing formulas. They are useless in reality.

Yes your right for some students who are not taking engineers or accountancy mathematics learning formulas are useless. Maybe for highschool students it is an introduction for to give them a little hint what was the course they should be taken in college and if they are qualified to take courses who specialize numbers. Instead being a smart how to handle money is a good idea.

Yes, make the kids learn the value of money, how to count and save, how much to spend for daily sustenance. This way they will learn about life and living as well.

Have to disappoint you there, those complicated mathematical formulas are not useless and will be used in real life. Take mathematics away and you get rid of a lot of other sciences too. No computers, no cars, no banks, no modern civilisation as we now it. I think it would be a a bit sad if the schools only emphasized things that'll make you earn money, but even if they did, you wouldn'g get rid of the math. Actually, it would probably be more than now.

I was never able to apply the Maths taught in high school when I went to college for they are always coming up with Math subjects that are irrelevant and not related to each other. I say they are all useless.

Hi, you are right. basic maths should be taught in schools which is necessary for making money and calculations for daily life. Maths should be optional subject after 10th standard. Those who like math sand who want to go for engineering or for maths related course can select this subject.
