Did it matter if the National anthem was mimed?

For some reason Beyonce decided to mime the National Anthem at Obama's inauguration ceremony. I watched it on TV but it looked like a live performance to me and those of us who watched it on TV had quite a close up view. I don't understand why people are making a fuss about it. She may have decided that her voice was not at its best in the cold air, she may have decided that it was better to use the recording that she knew was perfect, than tha live performance that may not have been so good. Performing the song was not just singing it, she performed it and that was live, full of vigour, emotion and pride there was nothing second hand about that. She did a great job and she should not be criticised for it.

People are so picky and critical now days. She could have been tired of singing. I would ignore it and move on. Some people just have to have something to grump about.

Now here I am on the other side, supporting your opinion on this. I think that it does not matter, although perhaps, as Lamb says, she should have let it be known that she was lip sync ing it. I do agree that she seemed to be in the spirit of the song in her actions. I also believe that if the press does not have some "scandal" to report on, or some "missed lines" they will manufacture a crisis and will stir something up. Aretha Franklin was quoted saying that Beyonce did a nice job with her taped performance, and that when the weather is cold as it was you often do not get the best out of your voice live. She did not feel that Beyonce was due criticism for her decision. Ms. Franklin did state that she herself did lip sync for the opening of a sporting event, I believe, one time.

Personally, who really knows on this one. Just quite interesting that they would assume and judge this on her. One day they are making a Big fuss about it, and then a couple of days later they were saying that she was really singing as they could hear actual music coming from her mike. All I know, I just think they like to claim all kinds of things just because it was the Presidential innaugriation, but doesn't someone owe Beyonce an apology?

I watched an interview or a press conference from beyonce. There were several press in there and one of the questions was why did she mimed the inauguration when she knows it was for the President himself. Apparently, Beyonce is really strict when it comes to her performances. She was ready to perform and to sing the anthem live. However, the sound system group was late in the set up and it was almost time for the inauguration... and they haad no time to do sound checks, so there is no guarantee that while she is singing it, the sound, the music would be perfect. This is the reason why she (Beyonce) did not risk performing the song live and opted to be there, and just mime the national anthem. So that was the reason... then after explaining, Beyonce sang a line or two of her song(i forgot, as i am not really a fan he he).. then asked in a very affirmative tone" Any more questions?" Hehe i think this said it, if they were asking if she already has lost the beautiful voice, well she hasn't! she just sang and proved that she has wonderful voice. :D Agreeing with you on what you said in here, yeah beyonce do have a wonderful voice, its beautiful and its sure as a talent like no one else, and yes there is only these people trying to make an issue out of Beyonce. I would be frustrated and i'd make a big deal out of it if she mimed songs when i paid for a ticket in a concert! :D

It's kind of sad that she might not have had enough confidence to remember our National Anthem and had to lip sync it.

This type of thing does not matter at all. She did a good job acting like she was singing and it was just the national anthem, not an entire concert up there. Kinda looked like everyone was lip syncing up there if you ask me.

It doesn't matter to me how she did it as long as she did it right. You are right....too much of a fuss about nothing!

It makes no difference to me as I'm British but the one thing I will say..all her 'live performances' in the past will now be scrutinized as people will be wondering if some of those were mimed as well. The way I see it, if she's so good then sing live. I think the 'cold affecting the vocal chords' is a bit of a smokescreen and I reckon she was going to mime all along.

I loved it! I had no idea it was mined. When I found out I figured she was afraid it wouldn't be perfect. She created it in a studio. So what? It was still her. I love Beyonce so I have nothing bad to say.
