burn fat or build muscle or both

So here's a question for folks out there. I'm overweight and I have alot of fat to burn. However, I want to build muscle too. Now is it best to focus on burning fat and doing more cardio or building muscle and core work or combination of both? I don't know what's the right direction to go. I've been at a plateau and I do take a body pump class pretty regularly, eliptical, weight machines, and treadmill. I know some of it is also for the time of year where we eat more with it being winter and carbs... not that I mean to but darn it no cold food in winter :p

Ladyboheme has given you a very good answer. I would say that you need to do both. Yes, you will have muscle with a layer of fat over it, but by building larger muscles you tend to burn more calories even when you are resting. Another thing you need to do is to make sure you get enough sleep. It would help you with losing weight.

I think you should lose fat first before building muscles? I'm no physical fitness trainer. But in my logic, you need to shed of the fat and get the ideal structure before shaping it or hardening it into muscles as finishing touches. But that's just me though.

I agree with your answer. You need to lose the fat before building muscle. If you think about it, if you start building muscle first, you'll end up with big thighs and big arms which include muscle AND fat. You don't want that. You want to tone up first, then strengthen your muscles.

Precisely. Plus if you muscled up first it would be harder to decrease it's size.

Both at the same time. Cardio is the only way to burn the fat.. but building muscle helps speed up your metabolism and helps you burn more calories. Ideally I would shoot for 1 hour of cardio everday (work up to it), then 20-30 minutes of weight training.. making sure to rotate your muscle groups. I focus on one muscle group per day (or more like each time I go cuz that's not everyday). One day I'll do arms, then legs, then chest and back, then abs. Work em until they're sore!

I think it's better to burn fat first.I too go to gym for building muscle, but my trainder also tell me that it is not necessary to build muscles.Ideal health is okay.I too do treadmill, weight machine etc.Treadmill is the best option to loose weight.

My suggestion not required to burn fat or burn muscle. Just work hard and do more exercise, eat healthy food then automatically everything happening good. whatever the shape you have you can get it perfectly. sometime we weel more muscle is not good and at the same time more fat also not good.

Building muscle will help to burn fat, so keep doing both. Good luck.

When I was going to my personal trainer he had me doing a combination of cardio and strength training. I was burning fat and building muscle at the same time. I was not losing a whole lot of pounds at first, but I was losing inches of body fat. He told me that nothing drives him crazy more than seeing people come in and walk on the tredmill for 20 minutes and then leave. He swears you gotta do both! I dunno it was working for me until lost sight of my goal and got busy with life and stopped going to the gym. I really need to start going again.

You can do both at the same time. You need a proper diet and to incorporate both aerobic and anaerobic exercise into your routine. If you hit a plateau, you need to change up your workout. Eventually after doing the same thing over and over, the body will become used to it, so you have to do something different to 'surprise' the muscles and 'wake them up'. There are plenty of articles on this. You do a combination of both because in the process of losing weight or burning fat, your skin will also sag or loosen up, so you need to firm your body as well. You do the cardio then also do weights to balance the impact of weight loss. This is what I do and so far I think it's been effective.

My eldest son was kinda overweight when he was 14 years old. What he did was, he lessened his food intake so that he could trim down, did a lot of exercise and cardio work out. And when he was lean enough, he started using weights. Now he got a very nice well-toned body.

Diet will be one effective way to easily be trim down. Then you do exercise, you burn the fats and the muscles will be visible. The machines you had mentioned is for cardio and increase endurance, the dumb bells or other forms of weights is for building the muscle bulk.
