Becoming Rich is Bad

As I was reading a particular book about business, I came to realize that most of us here in our country were oriented to be contented on what we have and that becoming rich can lead us into selfishness and evil doings. I can see this orientation as a hindrance into progress because having this mind setting results into not having bigger dreams and ambitions. What do you think?

Hello Kenshin, Isn't that what's happening to most people now a days, they become rich they try to make people envy that they can afford this and that, even take pictures of the food they eat in restaurants? some are good knowing how money is valued but some aren't. well, we should look at those who are rich in other asian countries like china, singapore, hongkong or what ever. some are more stuck in the materialized world than being contented for what they have. have a nice day

Those people who take pictures of the food they eat at expensive restaurants are just wannabes. They're showing off so that people will think they're rich. Most people I know, who are self-made rich people, tend to "hide" their wealth. It's common sense to rich folks to maintain a low profile as possible so as to evade evil people who want to exploit them.

Great thought there letran, as always! Well, I just realized now too. Most of my classmates are really into picture taking. They capture the food they eat, the vacation they have, the gadgets they own and even pictures with their respective bf/gf and publishing it on facebook and other social networking sites.

I don't think a lot of people have this mentality. In fact a lot of Filipinos want to get richer so they can help other people. I for one would like to get rich for that purpose. Of course I want to have a comfortable life and for that I need money but I feel that my real purpose in life is to provide jobs for those who need and want it. This is my dream

How about trying to chat with "tambays", beggar, urban and rural poor and you will also realize that what I am saying is true.

I live in a very poor area. Most of he people here are content with their modest lifestyle but only a few would give up on an opportunity to get rich. Most of them would say that they are content with having just enough because they have no means of getting more than what they can for now... I'm not saying that there are no poor people who think like what you said but I believe that most of them do not have the thinkingthat having money makes someone greedy. Well, I guess I am very lucky to live in a community with a 'pay it forward' mentality

the truth for me is that those people who are poor and lack of education are actually lucky because they don't have much to worry about life, the world or any thing that concerns a regular working citizen (taxes, loans, etc.). though education should be given priority to them, i think that's the real problem now a days. besides, people tend to get greedy when their rich.

I would not go so far as to say that wealth will lead a person towards selfishness or any other immoral attitude. People tend to have a specific attitude towards others, which obviously varies from person to person. If a considerate and helpful person becomes rich then they are not likely to change their character in any way. The only way in which wealth can affect a person's behaviour is by giving them the opportunity to behave as they want to, so anyone who behaves that way was most likely the same person previously but did not have the chance to show their true character.

I agree with you one hundred percent on this one. This way of thinking limits our potential and dulls our perspectives on earning more. I myself have created a mindset that I'll be rich in the near future. But this is not just a dream for me, it's more of a goal. I need to work hard for it.

At last, a person who agrees with me, thanks for that xtedaxcvg. Anyhow, indeed this mind setting hinders us from our goals in life. Most of us now settle only to what is already there or focus on things that are plainly attainable.

advantages of being a developing 3rd world country? majority of the top 10 happiest countries in the world are from 3rd world countries. I think if the time were our country will become a first world country, we are going to be one of the most snobbish people ever, I mean we already have Filipino pride already in our current 3rd world state.

I think not most because why there are still a lot of poor individuals? Maybe its true that some people are like this. I also have a dream of becoming rich in the near future but I have this dream not only for myself but for my community as well.

Well, all I can say is that everyone wants to be a millionaire but doesn't strive to reach that. Some are even relying on lottery and gamble to reach their goal but doesn't have a concrete plan and desire of achieving it.

Becoming rich is not bad, i do not think being rich is evil in itself alone. We must admit that there are people who are mean the moment they gained the power of money. But then there are those who became rich but never forgot to go back to their roots and shared their blessings. How you use the material things you have (including money and connections and power) that defines a person. Not all rich are the same, not all poor are the same as well... and thi... i s is my take on the issue. It is okay to be content - most peopple who are happy are content with their life. But it does not mean that when you are content you do not want to be financially stable and gain financial power, it is just that sometimes when one is content he is resolved to what he has, and does not work as hard as those who have ambitions to be rich.

It really depends on the person being content and happy with his or her life. some people who were born with the money that they have in the family are often not be able to feel happy when they get what ever they want with material things that they didn't earn. i think it's how we take on life and how we interpret it. having so much money doesn't mean you can be happy.

Well I guess that belief is true many are really afraid to become rich because of these and that reason. But I believe that anyone can be if they wanted to and persevere in becoming one. For as long as the means is acceptable to many and the law then there is nothing wrong in becoming rich.

It depends on the perception of an individual. We are not brain wash for being contented with our latest situation and become the same situation after many years or even up to the time you will die. It's not that matter why we don't have any development from ourselves up to the government. The main problem why we are not eager to become rich or improve our way of life, it's because of our attitude. People will get jealous if others will improve, the crab mentality and also laziness. Those are the hindrance why huge percentage of Filipinos prepare to stay as poor rather than rich.

Hello Kenshin, I don't think being rich is bad, but having bad intentions using the money to harm others is. just like this coming election peopel use money to buy gadgets to screw the PCos machines or worse purchase people's votes. there was this speaker that i watch in television at night, saving there's nothing wrong with entrepreneurship or having money but you should know when to spend it wise and spent it to help people

Not exactly that it is a hindrance into progress, my friend. Everybody wants to be rich. It's just that others are afraid of how they will handle their richness and how it will adversely affect the family. Sometimes, i do think like that. I am afraid to be so rich, because my husband might get a lot of other women, because he can already afford to house each of them.

It’s not just in the Philippines. It also exists in countries were the margin between rich and poor are very large. It seems that the rich people are always the bad guys because they are lucky and they managed to hold to their wealth. The media doesn’t help the image since the poor usually means a good person and a bad person has wealth and power. It’s not the universal truth but I know personally that some people have this mindset. I was accused as one under this stereotype when I was in school. Anybody can be rich but holding to wealth is another question. Also, you get accused sometime sof being ‘madamot’ even if you are not. people expect to have a certain but unspoken equality. Some people expect you to give more since you are branded as rih or you just have something new or even reused. Being content depends on the person’s expectation in life. Some are, some aren’t But when one does succeed, that’s where a green monster called envy comes in.

Why would getting rich be bad? Man is both spiritual and material, so if in case you become rich, don't forget the spiritual aspect in you, actually there is no hindrance, it's just man who hinders himself.

I don't really know anything about your country or anything but I do think not dreaming bigger could potentially hold us back from going further in life... I do understand the book because being rich DOES change some people. Some people start to think they are better than others and they should be most important. But not all people end up that way. It is free to dream, and no one should have that taken away. We should all dream bigger and strive to get there the best we can...

of course what you say is possible, but if you love what you do more then the money it self then the hindrance in progress becomes less of a problem.
