Unnecessary spending
January 27, 2013 11:17pm CST
I really love ti buy things that I don'e even need. Sometimes when I go to grocery stores, I buy those things that is not even in my list. I start to but those when I'm browsing all the goods and find some things that I want to buy.
Most of the times I don't follow my budget for that day for groceries anymore. I just can't help but buy nice things, especially sweets..:) What to do?

Dear friend,
I feel it would be sort of spendng addiction, but at times I too had then thought of taking less money with me so that I will not use much of it. I feel the money in our makes us spend on unnessary things. For several months I would avoid cash and credit cards. But the situations become bit mess when actually money goes down or nil when we required something urgently....

I have my credit card but i prefer to use cash whenever I go to grocery. Having a list and sticking to the plan will certainly help.
I am very particular with the things that I buy especially now that I have my husband is out of work.
Have a nice day!

I do want to have a list for grocery. And I want to try it so that I can see if I can do it. Thank you:)

Looks like you did all the necessary steps to avoid over spending. You only need the extra "Will Power" or should I say "WON'T POWER", to say NO to yourself every time you see something that you want to buy but is not on your list.
Carrying CASH instead of debit card or credit card also works because you can see that you're limited to a certain amount of money.
Good luck.

I agree. It's a question of "do I need this?" that comes in my mind whenever I'm tempted to buy something..Thanks anyway:)

Hi Romina :D
If you usually meet this kind of problem at the grocery even with a list, I suggest go there with a full stomach, like 30 min. after having a heartily lunch. With that, you'll be less attracted to food and you are at tiptop shape to focus. Much more, walking around the grocery is a good way to burn the food you recently had.
But we can't just stop our craving like that or we'll feel empty. Assign a normal budget for something you like every time you go to grocery. I suggest enough to buy yourself a small box of chocolates or cookies for a week treat. You should include a little portion of your budget for something you would like since it feels like a reward for the small things we have accomplished.
When you go over your budget for things you'd like, think it over, "Do I really want it?" You have to compensate for going over the limit like carry over the extra to your next grocery so you'd buy less next time. Or do something productive/helpful for others or yourself to burn out the extra bulk-adding sweets.

I've suffered a lot of these problems. I still have to work on it, but I'm on the right way. I've been spending loads and loads of money on stuff I didn't really need... make-up, CDs, candles, clothes, jewelry, sweets, fast food... but this year I started to spend less. So, my saving tips:
-don't go around with too much money
-have a list with you
-don't go shopping or anywhere hungry
-it's not fro groceries, but try to avoid shops, which have temptation for you

I agree with doroffee,
The best solution is avoid the temptation. To do this, bring just enough money for what you need with a little allowance for contingencies.
