It was a rough night Wednesday night...

I was having chest pain, nothing serious, it was more like gas...but it kept me awake for quite awhile Wednesday night. I tossed and turned and finally gave in and took a sleeping pill. I fell into a fitful sleep and suddenly dreamed that a horribly ugly man was nose to nose with me, threatening me with some horrible painful torture if I didn't do something he wanted me to do. I managed to wake myself up, heart pounding! I should interject that I have a night light in the bedroom so I can see the dog before I trip over her at night...well the nightlight had cast a glow on the right side of my bed and I was nose to nose with a horribly ugly face! I screamed in absolute terror!!!! Willy, Khuay, and Dinglebeary scampered off the bed and went into hiding. Abby, the pit/lab raced from the room in sheer panic, and the little guys CD and Little Bit started barking like crazy. My vision finally cleared and I could finally manage to see what was staring at me...it was a small furry face with huge blue eyes and a very confused expression on her sweet little kitty face. It was of all people, Murphy my 19 year old Siamese. She couldn't figure out "why" I was screaming at her. How was your night? It took me a while to settle the house back down (as well as my heart!) and try to get back to sleep. Have you had one of your critters scare the daylights out of you???

I have a history of being scared or startled by black cats. A farm cat at a rural ceramic shop stowed away in my vehicle once, and popped up behind me, about two miles down the road. My current black kitty, Princess Inky tnes to sleep in black chairs and I have sat on her more than once in the dark.

I have managed to sit on the cats and dogs myself. The funniest story is when I was applying for disability and they sent a social worker to make sure that the place I was living in with my Mother was suitable. We had a large Irish Wolfhound, Royal Standard Poodle mix dog that we needed to get out of the way, plus I had a tiny Siamese cat that was sleeping on the chair in the livingroom (the social worker was going to sit in that chair). I decided that most sane with it people will check the chair before they sit down, so I figured that the dog was more important. I ushered the dog into Mom's bedroom and shut the door. I headed back to the livingroom and got there just in time to see the woman come in and simply plop her fanny in the chair...WITHOUT LOOKING! The woman stood up in less than a split second. She claimed that the cat jumped up into the chair while she was sitting down (which wasn't true). Well the cat jumped down (fortunately none the worse for wear)and the woman plopped down in the chair again. Through the whole interview the cat sat on the end table beside the woman and glared at her. The woman didn't apologize to the cat. The kicker to the whole story is that the woman weighed around 290 pounds! I could see the viewpoint from the eyes of the cat, here is that barn of a fanny coming down on her... It had to be terrifying! We don't have any dark furniture and all the cats know that they need to get out of my way when I sit down. I did sit on my mini dachshund one time when he hid under the cushion of the couch. They love to snuggle in things like blankets and under cushions...which makes them targets for the odd fanny looking for a place to sit. But I have learned to be careful when I sit with the number of critters I have!

Wow you have a lot of pets! I keep my bedroom door closed at night so the cats cannot get in. It would keep me awake if they were on the bed. I'm weird like that, don't like sharing my space. I even sleep better when my husband isn't in the bed.. which sometimes he sleeps on the sofa when he's having digestive problems.. or if I'm really sick and he knows I need the sleep.

It's interesting, because I sleep better with my herd of cats with me. It's like a cozy comforter or a special blanket that makes you feel warm and secure. Of course there is the problem of if I locked them out of the bedroom they would be driving me nuts trying to get in. There would be paws under the door waving around trying to find the secret thing that opens the door. If the paws didn't work then it would be the vocalization (which is putting it mildly, they would be yelling their heads off!). And if that doesn't work, they would start knocking things off shelves and tables. That definitely would have me up and opening the door! I will say that I don't do well sleeping with another "human" person in bed with me. I am so used to sleeping alone. I had a hard time adjusting to Bill in bed with me when we took our trips across country. I did finally adjust, but I do have doubts about it now as I sleep so differently than a couple of years ago. Check for my discussion about what happened last night with the cats...it's a riot!

No, the worst that they have done to me is have a cat fight on top of me. The roomie finally kicked them out of her room when she had enough of them jumping down on her in the middle of the night. As in, on her stomach/bladder from things, you know...

Oh my! Are you sure the chest pain was just gas? Apparently, a lot of heartattacks feel that way. Anyway, the scare got your heart beating. How are you feeling now?

I am doing much better now. I had to eliminate green olives from my diet because of the amount of salt they contain. I am careful about my salt consumption now so I knew it wasn't salt. Ahhh, I did know it was just gas because after I got my heart under control I let loose with a fart that rattled the windows and raised the sheets on the bed about 6 inches off the bed. I keep a very close eye on symptoms and anything that could be a heart attack warning signal. I am very very careful. Thank you for your concern, it makes me feel a LOT better too!

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Hey i hope u are alright now. I think it happens with most of us at night when we are not feeling well due to some problem or gastric issues. Besides even i have had many sleepless nights due to my gastric issues and during such situations even i get many nightmares at night. But i have always tried to forget those nightmares. What say?

I got a huge laugh out of the whole incident...I had to share it! Of course hand in glove with the "face" staring at me was the fact that I was sure that it was Thursday night rather than Wednesday night. It doesn't make too much difference except that I was expecting to get paid through my debit card and I couldn't figure out why I wasn't paid! It wasn't until someone explained to me that it was Wednesday instead of Thursday nights. I discovered that pain causes most of my nightmares, and I have decided that if necessary I will take necessary pain medications so that I don't have the pain induced nightmares. People that have chronic issues do have a higher incidence of nightmares, and they are so hard to control. I know about the gastric issues, and I do have them manifest themselves at night. I learned one thing, and that is to NEVER lift the covers unless absolutely necessary.

Hahaha, another funny story a mylotter friend shared this morning, I love it. I haven't been "scared" but when I was horribly sick last year, one of the things I did during the day was go out onto the couch and watch a movie to get my mind of the pain and the fact I couldn't just "sleep" Of course watching the movies I did fall asleep, I normally would read, but I was that sick, couldn't even read. Anyways, I popped in a movie and saw about 2/3-3/4 of it when I fell asleep. When I woke up, Penny was nose to nose with me. It was daytime, so that could be why it didn't scare me, or I was so sick, I didn't care.

You had quite a nightmare. I can relate to your story, as I've had them, too. I used to dream or floods or fires, but lately, my nightmares have been about car crashes.
