I was really skinny and I got the same advice that I should put on some weight before I try to build. All in all that just couldn't work for me, I have a fast metabolism rate and no matter how much I eat, or what I eat, I just never got any fatter. I can tell you now that I am no longer skinny and I do have a lot of muscles. There was a special I had to do it and I am happy I never just took their advice or in the end I wouldn't end up getting to where I am. First of all the proper way to put on weight is not to eat a lot one time but to eat smaller portions more often. Instead of eating breakfast then lunch then dinner, you are going to have to switch to eating smaller portions but more often like every 2 hours. If that doesn't work then maybe he can try my way. What I did. Was to eat like 2 hours before exercise, then lift heavily where my muscles are starving for food, then eat alot after exercise. I also ate nutritionally, meaning carbohydrates and protein. And I basically continued that because what I realized was that if my metabolism was fast I needed to just change the food directly to muscles and not necessary fat to muscles. Even though some exchange would still happen then. I always tell people this. Quality is better than quantity, jus like mylot. It is better to do 3 proper bench presses rather than 5 non-aligned bad quality bench presses.

Oh and I still followed the eat every 2 - 3 hour rule. It might start to be really expensive though.

Thanks for your advice. Well that eat every 2-3 hour rule is interesting & it's worth trying. Your workout routine & diet plan could work for him because he also has a fast metabolism rate.

Protein and carbohydrates are what you need to gain weight. if you take more than 2000 calories a day, that would surely speed up your weight gain.

Bulking up is determined by the amount of calories you eat.Eeating healthy is hard as the food you get is quite filling.I use to be in the same boat as your friend,178cm @ 57-58 kilos, few years on and I'm 182cm @ 85 kilos So my advice eat calorie dense foods get your protein macro met and meat out on junk food,kfc/maccas/pizza you name it,you're going to put on some fat anyway,so you might as well enjoy the food you eat. Just dont over do it,1-2 kilos a month is good for weight gain.

I am watching this discussion closely as I am quite interested to the would be answers of myLotters out there for this one. I am looking to gain more weight as I am skinny since my childhood days. So I must be trying to gain weight first before doing workouts in gym. I must know the right diet to weight gaining.

If you train your muscles you will gain weight since muscles weight more as fat does. There are proteïne drinks (you can buy them in a can) for sportsmen (women) with a lot of calories. It might help you gain weight. Before starting at the gym you can also start training at home (running, etc). BTW being skinny is also in the dna so I would not make big illusions about getting huge one day.

Training muscles would be a good idea & Protein drinks are worth a try. Yes, body structure depends on genes & DNA & it can affect the effect of food items on the body.

A lot of protein and carbohydrates. I wish I had that problem instead, it's easier to put on weight than to lose it. Just eat what you want to eat and you'll bulk up in no time,
