There is a contest that I want to participate in, for an online site where I am a member. The task is to write a poem with a specific title! I have never written a poem before and I don't understand how they can make it sound and feel so natural and perfect! So, what do I have to do, thjnk about the content and make it rhyme, or decide about the ending words and find a way to include them in sentences?
It doesn't matter if it's good or bad! I just want to participate! All tips and advice on the techniques are appreciated!

Figure out what kind of poem you want to write and find a way to incorporate your subject into it. There is haiku, cinquain, acrosstic, free verse..just to name a few. Poems don't always rhyme.
Write some practice poetry and seek out unbiased opinions. Maybe run it across a literature teacher and ask their advice.

Oh, I have no idea what these are! I want it to rhyme though, it will be more appropriate for the contest. Imagine if someone was asking to write a poem about mylot, that's the kind of contest I am going to participate in. And I will probably need someone to make adjustments at the end! Thanks for the advice! :)

Get yourself a dictionary if you are a person who lacks good vocabulary. If not then all you need to do is select a topic that inspires you, get into the mood and go along with the flow. Poem's needn't always rhyme. There are a great deal of poems which are so dramatic that they seem like a ripoff from a movie. If your poem can deliver such an effect, then rhyming becomes 2nd priority. All the best for the competition :)

You may find it hard to write a poem if you are not really a poet. The least you can do is write down your thoughts, just whatever that comes to your mind about the title that was given, then from there you just have to arrange the words, like a sonnet or break the words to make it look and sound like a poem. If you have friends who can write, ask help. I'm sure they'd be glad to help you.

No, unfortunately the subject is predefined, it has to do with the website. For example, they gave a subject like "mylot" and now I have to come up with a poem that's about the website and rhymes!
I've seen a couple of other contestant's poems and they are so creative and fun! I hope I will make it!

Hi Bisweet ! You don't need to worry , it is just so simple because you have already the skill in writing , all you need is a heart now . You write anything you feel with a heart ! That emotion buried down , you ignite that and am so sure the output will be perfect ! No need to base poetry to some standard . Poetry must comes in so naturally, just have a timing with your mood . If you write when it in mood , even yourself you will be amazed in how you arrive for that poetry. All the best Sweet !

Aw, thanks! It looks hard for me to attempt this in english because of the rhymes and matching words that I have to create! Maybe I can start with the thoughts and then, when I know what I will write about, I will find the words that I can use to make it look better! I think I'm feeling inspired! I am going to start taking notes every time I have an interesting thought!

To be able to do any particular thing successfully in life, two of the requirements you must posses are Talent and passion. I discover that the reason why you suddenly want to become a poet is because a poetry competition comes up and you want to participate. But you need to ask yourselve whether poetry is your area or talent, while I in turn, ask you whether your have a passion for it.
However, I will tell you not to lose hope. If you must participate in the competition, go and buy a poetry handbook or download many poem topics from search engines. Read many of the poems repeatedly. This is the best way to learn poetry. After your reading, trust me, you will have idea of how to write poems. You may now begin to develope from there. Who knows, you may become a famous poet in the future, if you really have the passion for it. Haven't I given you something?

Thanks for the advice! I don't want to become a poet, I am better at technical stuff and not so much in theoretical fields so I don't think it will come naturally to me! This particular contest is for fun, not a professional poetry contest! I would like to have a general idea on how I can achieve my goal and write something decent that can enter the contest and have a good time while doing this! I have already decided that I want it to rhyme, but it is still very difficult for me to make it look nice and have a good flow! I am sure that everyone who has a good idea about poetry would write this in 30 minutes but it's going to take me much longer than this!

I like your sense of participation for the fun of it. There are lots of different forms of poetry but basically they are ones with rhythm and rhyme and others that do not. I suggest you read a few of both types and decide which you prefer.
There is a discipline to writing the first sort as the ends of some of the lines must sound the same, and there is metre to consider. I personally favour this. The freely written poetry is modern and it does require practice to get the flow and the kind of language that lifts it above prose and into poetry. Good luck.

It sounds like it comes naturally with you, but it's not the same in my case! I want to make it rhyme and this is a challenging part for me since english is not my native language and even though my level is good, poetry needs perfect vocabulary in order to find the words you're looking for!
This contest is just for fun and all the participats get some reward on the website, so I am not so worried about winning. I have read some of the other contestant's poems and I can't compete with them anyway!

Hi besweet!
That is good. Try participating in poem contest you'll never know you might win. I experience that and I won first prize in the picture poem contest in one writing website. I was so happy then and it inspired me to write poem always. The poems can be free verse or comes in different forms or the traditional poem. The free verse does not rhyme and has no meters while other forms have particular style and metered too. Some rhymes and some are not as long as the meter is right. The tratidional poem rhymes. Just focus on the theme and topic given. Poem is a kind of self-expression so just be natural and truthful. The flow of the poem must be good too and one element is the used of personification and metaphors wherein you compare persons or things to inanimate objects (e.g.the love of a mother is pure and white as a dove, tongue like swords can kill,...) I really hope you can try it. Good luck. :-)

HI edvc77! It's nice to hear that you had this great experience and you won the contest! This contest is just for fun so I guess that they aren't judging the technique, however I want my poem to rhyme! I used to write small funny lines with my friends when we were at school, each one of us was writing a couple of lines and the next one had to rhyme with the previous lines. But writing a poem in english is much harder for me because it needs good vocabulary and grammar skills in order to be successful and find the right words and metaphores!
Thank you for all the advice :)
