Why do people say respect your parents no matter what?

Are you kidding me? Why should you have to respect someone who molests you or gives you black eyes or yells at you and call you nasty names? It seems to me that some people on the internet look for ways to defend parents and make you look like a brat. It's possible to provide the basic needs and still be a lousy parent. Why should someone have to just sit there and take abuse just because it's their mother or father?

I know of the old saying "respect your elders" but don't think that applies to the situation you are talking about. Respect is earned in my opinion, not something that is automatic just because you are a parent. Any person that has to abuse their children in my eyes isn't a parent anyway. I really don't know why people have children if they don't want to take care of them.
Parenting isn't just providing food, clothing and shelter...it's also about raising a child to be a productive member of society.
