Did you have art and crafts lessons in elementary school? Which kinds of projects did you do? Did you learn things that you still use today?
I learned to knit in elementary school. Today I am 36 and knitting is still one of my favourite crafts. I also learned finger knitting and afterwards I did my own finger knitting projects at home, I experimented and I modified the technique a little. I still know how to finger knit, but I don't use it much as an adult. We also learned to sew. I didn't continue with that, and today I am not good at sewing.
I remember some of the projects that we did for instance a small bag, a butterfly and a doll. I haven't kept any of the things that I made, but it could have been fun to see some of those things today.

I love arts and crafts. So when it's our arts and crafts day in school, I always participate very well when I was in elementary. I remember learning how to sew and cross stitch. Now I use my sewing skills to make things for me and my family, Like pillow cases, bed sheets and even pajamas. I love sewing and I think it's a good thing that they teach that in school.

It is great that you are able to use the things that you learned about sewing. It sounds like you are very active and make many things for your family. I never got very good at sewing and today I wouldn't be able to sew clothes or things for our home, but I use the skills from the arts and crafts classes in other ways especially the things that I learned about knitting. Tonight I knit many different things for myself and for my husband. At the moment I am knitting a blanket and that is big project and it will take a long time to finish it, but I enjoy it a lot, so I am happy to spend my time on it.

You are lucky to be able to apply what you learned in your elementary school. I had no such things in my elementary school, so nothing from what I learned is useful now for me.

Yes, I am very happy that I learned to knit in elemantary school. I learned those things 25 years ago, and today I still like to knit so it was a very useful thing to learn. In my country art and crafts lessons are compulsory for both girls and boys so everyone learns how to sew, knit etc. In the past the girls were the only ones who had to learn those things, but today everyone has to learn the same things. We also learn to make things out of wood. I liked those lessons, but I was never especially good at wood work. Did you have other kinds of creative lessons in elementary school or did you only have theoretical subjects?

hi porcospino.
yes, we had arts and crafts class back in grade school. it was a once a week class that was two hours long. we did everything from painting, to drawing, and scrapbook making.
art class wasn't my most favorite subject but i did enjoy moments of it. i wasn't the most creative in teh class but i enjoyed looking at the art works of my classmates. when i was older, i tried getting into painting and drawing but talent just wasn't there. lol!

hi porcospino.
it was a good class as we did different projects every week. i wish i had paid more attention though because back in the day, i wasn't interested in art as a subject probably because it was only an elective subject. it was only later on in my life that i got interested in drawing, painting, and photography.
we also had a subject similar to what you are wrote about. in grade school, the girls had home economics wherein they were taught how to cook, sew, do the budget of the household, do the laundry ... basically home managment skills. us boys had woodworks or metalworks as an elective. we also had gardening. anyway, on my last two years in grade school, both girls and boys had to take both subjects. our class was divided into two groups. one group took home economics int he first two gradings while the other one took the other elective and then by the third and fourth gradings, the groups switched subjects.
i didn't like both elective classes honestly but i did manage to learn a lot.
lol!

That art and crafts class you had sounds interesting to me because I love art. The youngest students at my school had a subject where we had to draw, paint and make things out of clay. Our teacher loved clay and we often had to make sculptures out of clay. We also used paper mache sometimes. In the 4th grade we got a new subject and we had to learn to sew, knit and many other things. I was never good at sewing and even today I don't know how to sew. I could be interesting to learn in one day, because I would like to sew my own clothes. Maybe I will learn it one day

In my country they used to divide the subjects according to your gender so that the girls learned to cook and the boys learned woodwork. At that time they didn't think that boys needed to learn to cook as their wife would do that, but today everyone has the same subjects. Both boys and girls learn to cook and both boys and girls learn woodwork. I was not good at woodwork. We had to make a dishmat that looked like a fish and it was supposed to be round, my fish was not round at all because I kept making mistakes It was interesting to hear you learned gardening. We don't learn that at all. We don't learn things about laundry or budgets either, we only learn to cook and learn different kinds of crafts.

Hello Porscospino, you made me remind old times
Yes I remember my crafts classes, I did many projects. and I have used many of the techniques since I got married 16 years ago. I´m 40 now.
At college we sew a lot, we made cushions, kitchen ware, school bags, bed clothes, dolls. We did painting, we did some wastebaskets, stuff animals. Painting on cloth.
When I was just married I did crafts to save in gifts, because the crafts were quality crafts and nice ideas.
Later with kids on school I did school costumes, and house crafts with kids.
I sew many clothes for children such as dresses, underwears, pants, shorts, pijamas. I´m happy to had those classes that some schoolmates called useless.

Hi Porco! Knitting is a very challenging task, because you have to end what you began. And knitting is very useful too. My mom has knitted since I have memory, she knitted us a lot of vests, sweaters, scarfs, socks, and now she has knitted for her grandsons.
Knitting is not my success! I´m not used to have the patient to begin a knitting project and to end it all. Can you imagine that I have a neverended vest, I began it almost 14 years ago and I cann´t finish it. Or should I say I´m so lazy that I don´t want to finish it. I don´t know! Maybe knitting is not for me.
But in the other had I love cross stitching. I sew a Last Supper Cross stitch, it took me 10 years to finish it, but I finished it and it´s framed in our dinning room. But I can´t do knitting. I don´t know why. I think each of us has some abilities to make some things, and disabilities to do anothers. I´d love to have knitted some lovely sweaters!
It would be nice if you upload some of your finished works.
Blessings Porco... dainy

Thanks for sharing the picture of your cross stitch project. It is a beautiful We did some cross stitch projects in the arts of crafts lessons, but since that time I haven't really used the things that we learned. Some years ago I bought some materials for a cross stitch picture, but never really got started because I have learn everything from the beginning again. I still want to learn cross stitch and one day when I have more free time I would like to find some information online and learn it from the beginning.
I love knitting. My mother was like your mother and she also knitted a lot when I was a child. She made sweaters and many other things for us. When I started knitting my own things I could always ask my mother for advice because she had much more experience than I did. I don't have pictures of the things that I have knitted in the past and I gave most of them away as presents, but I am knitting a blanket at the moment. I would like to share a picture of it when I finish it (that is not going to happen in the near future )

And I make a lot of gifts for my friends.

I am not that good at figurative paintings. I enjoy experimenting with abstract paintings sometimes, but most of my paintings are mixed media (paint, paper and sometimes other materials) Like you I don't know much about oil paint. I have never used oil paint in my paintings, but I would like to learn more about oil paint, instead of using acrylics all the time like I do at the moment. Some years ago I used water colours, but since that time I haven't used them. It was a bit of a coincidence that I started painting. I reveived my first acrylics, brushes and canvasses as a present about 10 years ago. I discovered that I really enjoyed painting and I started buying my own materials

We share the same interests. I love to knit and I also love to paint. What kinds of paintings do you do? Figurative or abstract? Acrylics or oil paint? I have made some abstract paintings, but most of my paintings are a mix of paper (pictures from old magazines) and paint. So far I have only used acrylics, but I would like to experiment with oil paint in the future. In the past I also painted with water colours, but I haven't do that for a long time.

I learned a lot of different things back in school. I do remember being taught how to use a kiln, tole painting, knitting, crocheting, etc. I still crochet all the time, and sell a lot of what I make to people I work with, and at events, on Craigslist, yardseller and etsy.

Yes, you can learn how to crochet online via like you tube and if you are interested there are a ton of free sites online for knitting and crochet patterns as well. But being able to paint and having people interested in buying your stuff is good.

It is great that you sell the things that you make I sell my paitings and photomanuipulations, but it find it quite hard to sell those things online. It is easier to sell my art to people I meet in real life. I have never learned to crochet and it is one of things that we didn't learn at my school. We learned other things like sewing, knitting and cross stitching. I would like to learn to crochet, and I think that I can find instructions online and learn it on my own. I learned to knit in the lessons that we had and today (more than 20 years later) I still knit.

I remember how to make a paper mache pinata and while I'd have to look up the water/flour paste, I could do it again. Heck, I remember doing it again with string, then you pop the balloon and have a kind of hollow string art thing...
I learned how to yarn punch a rug in high school...
But really, the stuff I do now, I mostly taught myself how to do.

We also made paper mache pinata I don't remember how to do it, but I am sure that it would be possible to find the intructions online. My mother kept the things that I had made in school and used them as decoration in our home, but we don't have them anymore.
Which things do you do now? Today I use some of the things that I have learned at school like knitting, but I also like to experiment and create my own techniques. I am a self taught artist, and I like to teach myself other things. Today it is easy to find instructions online, but sometimes I prefer to experiment and develop my own techniques.

We didn't have any craft education in elementary school. But in 7/8th frade we had to take Home Economics. I had already been sewing, embroidery and other crafts since age 8 so by 7th grade, I had made many clothes and our only project was a skirt and in 8th grade was a dress. I was always ahead of the class cause I was already educated with it. Same thing with baking. She taught us how to bake biscuits and I was so bored! I'm like " teach me how to decorate a cake or bake a roast!". I have taught myself every craft I have ever done...never a class...and I have done alot of crafts over the years!

In my class there was a girl who was like you. When the lessons started and we learned to knit small and easy things like butterflies she already made her own clothes. The lessons weren't much of a challenge for her and she was bored. Everyone had to do the same things in those lessons and it didn't really matter that she already knew how to do those things, she had to do the projects anyway. Already before the lessons she was better than the rest of us were when we finished the lessons
I think it is great that you have taught yourself every crafts you have done. I am a self-taught artist and I love to learn new things and experiment on my own. In the future I want to teach myself to crochet. I have never tried that before.

I had to make a skirt for a home-ec project. That was when I was in high school many, many moons ago. That skirt was soooo ugly. I wasn't really enamoured of sewing and it was visible in the finished product. To this day, I don't sew.
I also learned to crochet. Now that was just up my alley. I've kept with it over the years and have many projects stuffed into bags in my closet. I need to find some way to get them sold or into the hands of people who will use them.

That sounds like me. In the art and crafts lessons I learned how to sew, but I was never good at it. I don't remember which things we had to make. I think that one of them was a bag, but I am not sure. The things that I made weren't exactly pretty I remember that I found sewing difficult and I often had to ask the teacher for help. Today I don't sew. I have thought about learning it because I think that it would be nice to be able to make my own clothes. I know that I would have to start from the beginning again, because I don't remember the things that I learned in those lessons many years ago.
I have never learned to crochet. We didn't do that in the art and crafts lessons. I am not sure why. We spent quite a lot of time on knitting. I found that difficult in the beginning, but today I love to knit and I have knitted many different things.

Like you I wish that I was good at sewing and I think that it could be great to be able to sew my own clothes or things for our home. One of my friends recently got new curtains and she made them herself. If I had to do the same thing I wouldn't know where to start or how to make the curtains I would like to learn to sew, but so far it is only an idea and I didn't make an effort to learn it yet.
In the art and crafts lessons we also learned cross stitching, but I haven't used the things that I learned since I left the school, and unfortuantely I don't remember how to do it. It is one of my projects for the future

We did the usual, the sock puppets, the clay ornaments and paper chains at christmas time. also, the dreaded macaroni art. We had to make macaroni necklaces, usually just small ones for our little necks, 12 inches or so, and macaroni portraits of our family members. Basically that was about it. I think every school had the same craft list, when I think of it. have a great day!

I looked up macaroni art when I had read your response and I found some pictures of portraits and other things. I have never tried that, we didn't do that at my school. I remember the sock puppets Some time ago my parents moved and I went through some old boxes. In one of those boxes I found a sock puppet that I made many years ago. We made many other things. Our teacher loved clay and we often had to make things out of clay for instance different kinds of sculptures. When I think about those lessons I usually think about all those clay things.

I did not learn any of these things in elementary school. Now I am an adult and I am learning how to make jewelry (earrings and bracelets) and sewing. I also want to learn how to quilt. I am not sure of you have JoAnns or Michael's out by you (two craft stores near me in Nevada) but they offer classes. I enjoy making jewelry and am hoping that sewing will be fun as well. Now that I am done with school I am hoping to have more time to make jewelry in hopes so start selling online at the end of March. I am hoping I can make some simple things to sew so I can sell those as well. I would love to learn how to knit and weave and woodworking.

I think that is a great idea to sell your jewelry online. Good luck with that. Some time ago I was a member of a craft group and some of the other members also made jewelry. They made some beautiful things, but I have never really tried to make jewelry myself. Most of the time I knit, I learned that in elementary school and I today I still like to knit. In the past I learned to weave, but I not sure that I still remember how to do it. I like you I would like to learn how to quilt. I have seen some of the things that my friends from the craft group made, but I haven't learned how to do it. I have learned to sew many years ago, but I haven't used it since that time and I still consider myself a beginner.

I did have art and crafts lessons when I was in elementary. I think up until high school. They were so fun. I'm actually glad to have done those because they are very useful for me now. I've done a few sewing materials and am planning to do some knitting as well as soon as I give birth and settle to a better place.
I'm sure relearning them again wouldn't be so difficult for you, so give it a try! =)

At my school we had art and crafts lessons in the 4th grade. The only thing that I learned and still use today is knitting. I learned the basic things about knitting in those lessons and after that time I experimented on my own and learned how to make more complicated things. I have never learned to crochet, but I would like to learn that in the future. I think that I would be able to learn that on my own. There are books that I could use and today we are also to find all sort of information on the internet and that is a big help if we want to learn something on our own. Some of my friends use YouTube videos to learn new things, and I think that sounds like a good option.

We have home economics starting 4th grade to 6th grade. And we did projects for sewing, cross stitching, embroidering, and cooking. I barely pass and all my projects are just okay, nothing that really makes it very good. Now that I am an adult, I am still engrossed with cross stitching. I have finished some projects and have even framed those that are really pretty and sent them as gifts.
