Giving up cable TV

I think we will be giving up cable TV here. It's an added expense when about all they watch is news. They can get news on the Internet. We discussed putting up an areal antenna. It will connect to our digital thingies that we have in the living room and our bedrooms. We couldn't afford to have cable in my room so my TV is hooked up to the Net via a ROKU divice for Netflix. I'll be able to watch my soaps in my room on my TV instead of online with local broadcasting and also have great movies on Netflix. I do like the OWN Channel but I can see that online with my laptop. Are there full episodes of other channels on the Net? Like HBO or Cinamax or something without having to buy a subscription?

I haven't paid for cable in more than twenty years. Too expensive. And I don't watch much tv other than news and documentaries. I do like PBS and their programming and I get that via air antenna. I read more than I watch television anyway. There is a free tv online via TelevisionFanatic but I've not downloaded their program. I'm leery of spies and malware which I am sure their program is loaded with.

Hely, CatLady! Thanks for the link. I'll give it a look-see. You don't worry about spyware/malware with it?

Try this link for free TV. There is nothing to download, but you do need to register. I watch all my favorite shows, like 2 broke girls, COPS, CSI, Family Guy etc. http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/ This in NOT a referral link. I have no interest in the company other than that of an end user.

I wouldn't want to download anything I wasn't sure was safe, for sure. I have Netflix but that doesn't carry current TV shows like my favorite soap.

The reason why I decided to a certain cable company in our place is that when Manny Pacquaio ( The Filipino Boxing Champion) has a fight, my husband would have to go a gymnasium to be able to watch the fight. The monthly subscription in our place is only $6.25 so this is affordable. Have a great day!

I think my family is happy with it because my husband wants to watch boxing, news and other sports channel and my two children want to watch anime, k-pop shows/concerts, MTV and some movies. So fr I can't hear complaint from them. I personally, don't watch TV often. Only if I have the time. Have great day!

Amazon has a lot of recent TV shows that you can stream through a Roku but the newer shows may cost $1.99 per episode. They do offer some shows for free and they also have a free month trial that you can use to see what additional shows the give for free on Amazon prime. I think it costs around $67 for a full years subscription. To use an antenna make sure all your TV's are relatively new (made in 2006 or later) otherwise they may not get digital TV signals without a converter box.

yes everything costs something at Amazon...but right now they are offering a 30 day fre trial of Prime. We are using it to catch up on a few Television shows that we missed ...such as Falling Skies, Pawn Stars and Antique Roadshow.

I don't want to do any free trials and then have another monthly subscription to pay for. I have thought about getting HuluPlus but I don't know if it is better than Netflix. Ive used that search function on ROKU.

I cancelled my tv ages ago, I watch all mine online whether it be on that channel site, or a few other sites. I don't watch enough tv to really spend the money on it. I know some who pay up to $300 a month on TV alone.

I was paying $150 for the basic satellite packages. I am not much of a tv person, I would normally have it on iin the background while online. So now I have the radio on.

I have never had cable or paid for TV before, we only have free to air here at my house. The internet gives so many possibilities now that I don't atch much TV anymore and watch episodes without commercials online. I'm not sure about full eps on the sites you mention which would be the official sites. I go to sites called Curcica and Couch Tuner that have TV shows to stream. Hope that helps some

I just use rabbit ears. They bring in the regular T.V shows. My husband does have Direct T.V on the bedroom T.V. because he spends most of his time there. He can get Discovery on that while I can't.

Do the rabbit ears work well? Do you connect them to a converter box or to the TV itself. I'm wondering since all TV signals are digital now and not air waves.

That's great. I just saw where I can get a USB device for my computer to get the major stations. SIL's uncle got it at Walmart. I have the major stations online where I can watch TV the day after they air.

We have to have a converter box for the old T.Vs but the new one doesn't need it. We have 3 different kinds of rabbit ears. Some work better than others. One we have to turn a knob to get different stations while the other we may just have to turn the rabbit ears to get a better reception. Where you have the T.V seems to make a difference. The one in the basement doesn't get much.

We have thought about it for the last few months. I am tired of paying over $100 a month so my husband can watch storage wars and shows similar and reruns of old tv shows. I am not tech savvy and have no idea how we can get hulu, and Netflix to show on the tv's in the house. If I did, I am sure it would be gone.

Ours isn't that high but it's more than SIL can manage right now. I can't take that payment on myself. I buy the food and pay $200 as my part of the rent and $100 as my part of the power, water or whatever. I can't do anymore. I rarely have the extra money to take care of my own needs like clothing, shoes, socks, underwear or whatever. My online money helps me afford those.

I don't have cable tv anymore because living alone I found I never watched it anyway it was more for my daughters. I watch regular tv or online. I also use redbox a lot when I want to see a movie. I really don't miss it at all. Thank goodness I can watch shows I missed online or I might think differently of it. I think if more people stopped using cable the price for it would go down but I understand those with children need to have it or the children would go crazy!!

I agree! The price might come down if the demand for it went down from people finding their shows online. What is redbox? Is that like ROKU? I have a ROKU device on my TV.

I watch CBC, CTV, Global and HGTV online, without a subscription. (Just put .ca after each.) I'm not sure if you can get them in the states, though. I know I can't get NBC and CBS online here in Canada.

I can live without cable as long as i can at least watch the local channels. I don't watch the cable channel. They are not necessary or important. I just watch mostly news

I don't think that there is a way that you can watch the current season's episodes from any of the more premium channels online, but I know that there are ways that you can watch some of the older seasons online for free. For me, I really don't see us giving up cable television at any time in the near future because my husband is addicted to several of the different channels. However, I will not invest the extra money into having multiple boxes in our house so the children do all of their viewing via the internet or through the ROKU that we got for our living room. The cable box is in our bedroom.

I guess not. I can see a lot of HBO movies on Netflix and Hulu Plus but they are older movies. I haven't seen them so it's all good when I do watch one.

I think that's a practical idea. I never had cable in my whole life. I was planning to subscribe to one if I can afford it, but thanks there's already internet, I can watch those movies and tv shows so I think I don't really need a cable anymore.

Without paying? I don't think so. I don't have cable service. I bought the box at Walmart for over the air channels only and it is perfect for what I like to watch on TV. You say yours is the ROKU. I have Boxee TV. I do wish I had access to the USA channel though. I'm missing out on the new season of Psyche. Hopefully, Netflix will get it soon though.

Someone said there will be other networks that will be like Netflix for a nominal fee. That would be good if that's so. In very satisfied with Netflix and Hulu plus.

When I hear someone has cable subscription that means they have excess money. With a lot things we need to allot for our money, your really rich if you can afford cable TV. Cable TVs are usually enjoyed when you are in a hotel or even in a private hospitals.

Here even people I abject poverty have cable and satellite TV. They even have Internet with a bundle contract with cable. If I lived by myself I couldn't afford it. I did live in one apartment where cable was included in my rent.

That has always amazed me how people could be living deprived of food but yet there in the picture is a T.V. or I see dishes out on their roof. I think I would rather do without T.V if I were having to get food from the food bank. Maybe people way out from civilization might need something to keep them getting lonely.

Cable TV is definitely a luxury. It's particularly difficult to justify keeping it the way providers repeatedly raise their prices. I know it's not entirely the cable companies' fault because the cable networks keep asking for more money all the time, but eventually someone needs to step up and just say, "NO! We're not raising rates any further." I actually really enjoy having cable, but I'd drop it pretty quickly if I was having serious money problems...it's not a necessity and it's darned expensive! Sometimes you just have to make tough choices to save money. To watch HBO and Cinemax online, I think you have to already have a cable subscription. There's been some talk about making HBO online it's own service like Hulu, but their business model is still centered around cable so they're reluctant to do so. My guess is we'll only see more and more content online as time goes on, though. My hope is that cable will still be able to save itself by cutting prices, but that's not the way the trend is going at the moment. I noticed you mentioned watching soaps...are you planning to watch the revived online versions of AMC and OLTL? I think they're going to be on Hulu. If they're hits, I guess that's another example of how TV is moving online.

I just watch Y & R and B & B. I don't have Hulu. I haven't seen Hulu on ROKU ...I see Hulu plus but not the free version. That would be great if HBO came online.

hi PointlessQuestions there is cable already in my room so I have cable internet but Time Warner costs too much for me to afford cable TV and if I can find some of the things I like on TV on the net that will be fine. As it is I pay 44 dollars every month for the cable internet so that is all I can afford.
