Have you ever started to make something, only to realize you don't have an ingredient that you'll need? I was chopping chicken to make dinner.. and thought some chicken salad sounded good. But before I chopped all the chicken, I went to look and see if I had mayo to make chicken salad. I don't.. the kids ate it all. My 6 year old loves mayo sandwiches.. I think he eats just the bread and mayo.. gross! Either way.. I have no mayo, and couldn't make chicken salad. I'm disappointed, but at least not as disappointed as I'd be if I'd started assembling the salad only to realize then that I don't have the mayo. So I saved a few pieces of chicken for when I do get some mayo.. then I can enjoy my chicken salad!

I don't get started on things and then realize I don't have something I need very often, but do get it in my head that I want to make something only to realize that I am missing an important ingredient. Most of the time I opt for something else, but sometimes I want it bad enough to run and get the missing ingredient or ingredients.

Laziness usually wins for me as well. I think I will just get it the next day and then the next day I forget.

I spent all night trying to decide which was more important.. my laziness or my desire for a chicken salad sandwich. The laziness won out.

I'd hate that too! When you start to get cooking thinking you have all the ingredients, only to find that you're missing one or two in the middle of the process. I try to look before I start, but I've often made that mistake. Thankfully, a Walmart supercenter, plus another grocery store is literally just 2 blocks away from home.

I have a grocery store nearby too.. but I didn't feel like going out. Sometimes I'll send my son if I have cash.. but when it comes to mayo, it's too easy to mess up, so I didn't want to trust him with that. He might have brought home salad dressing instead, or light mayo, or something else equally as gross.

I aminly do that when I am making desert type stuff like my cornflake cakes and realise I have forgotten the honey or soethign to top the cakes with! :( I usualyy then have to run out and get the ingredient as otherwise I cannot stop thinking about making it! Haha!

You could just make homemade mayonnaise. It doesn't take much time, and you only need a few ingredients. If using raw eggs makes you nervous, there are recipes that offer alternative ways of preparing the condiment.

I'd rather just go buy it.

Aww, but I also like eating bread with just a mayo! I know, I'm weird lol! Anyway, I always start out to cook something but ended up with another thing entirely because the ingredient that I just bought happened to be already consumed either by my husband or my kid siblings. And unlike you, I never checked.

I don't always look first.. things like mayo I expect to be there because we never used to go through it so fast.. until my son started loving these mayo sandwiches.

I did the same a few weeks ago. Took out this box of hamberger helper. I was in a rush and wanted to make something fat for my son. Did the meat and noodles, and realized it called for a cup of milk. I didnt have milk. had to send son to store for it.

This hasn't been something that has ever happened to me. The reason that it hasn't happened for me is because when I am getting ready to make something I will always pull out all of the ingredients that I am going to need to make that dish before I will ever start preparing it. Of course, I am a hard-headed person and therefore when it is a situation where I am missing an ingredient, I will run straight to the store to pick up the ingredient that I find that I'm missing.

I used to do that before I do the chopping first before checking if I have all engredients and now that I am cooking a lot compare to before I always have to check first if I have all the engredients;-)

It is bizarre and first you must relish the chicken salad to go with and also the ingredients would be nice to have a look atleast and understand the varieties of salad in it

It is a nuisance when that happens, but I think the advice given by someone else that you make your own mayo might work well for you with your mayo loving family. I usually check for ingredients first because I do not live near a shop where I can quickly get hold of things and I would never borrow from a neighbour. Since chicken will not keep for long either I imagine that your cupboard is now full with one extra jar of mayo hidden out of sight of the children...

Yup, sometimes I did just that. Trying to cook something when I don’t have one or two ingredients in the fridge. Last time, I tried to make onion soup, I think I still have milk left over, but I don’t so I need to go to the convenience store to buy it.

I have done that and I have learn my lesson to check if all my ingredients are present before cooking. The mayo part, well, if you can make a homemade mayo then you can save a lot. When I was making chicken sandwich and I ran out of mayo I just make one. My family didn't even know it was homemade until I told them.

I don`t usually have those problems as I make almost everything from scratch. I check on the main ingredient (in this case the chicken) and the rest is imagination. I make my own mayo if I don`t have bought mayo (which I almost never do). It is easy: an egg (whole), oil, salt, pepper and helf a lemon. Blend it and it is ready. The only time of the year when I don`t make mayo is in the middle of Summer because it is way too hot and I`m afraid of the salmonella. I don`t think that anything will happen in the fridge for a couple of days, but I prefer to be on the safe side.
