Finally!

After months of trying and applying to a lot of jobs at Odesk, I finally landed my first contract. It was just accidental. I decided to check Odesk after weeks of not opening it to withdraw some of my more than a month pending applications. I'm not really interested in applying anymore because of the competition against experienced contractors until I saw a writing job advertisement posted and for reasons I don't know, I decided to apply for a job. Then that's it! I got hired :)
I just realized that when you decided to stop trying, there will always be a way to remind you not to quit :)

All of us have experiences and skills so personally, I think getting hired also comes with luck :) If you're into design, then I think it's easier as compared to other jobs. Try uploading some of your sample works in your Odesk profile so that the employers can easily see it and shortlist you for the job :)

I signed up with Odesk last month and I applied 2 jobs but I was not hired. It is so hard to get a job in Odesk if you are just new. It is so hard to compete with these five star contractors. I think it is easier to get a job in Freelancer than Odesk but I know someone who gets a lot of jobs in Odesk. He's member since 2010 and now he is a 5 star contractor. Try your luck in Freelancer but actually I don't have any jobs yet on Freelancer but they allow 10 bids for newbies. I discovered a site similar with odesk and freelancer but it's only meant for Filipino contractors. That's where I got my first online job as a virtual assistant. I also got several offers about writing jobs but writing is my second priority. I prefer data entry jobs more.

Thank you jadoixa!
It's difficult indeed that's why it's important to be patient when looking for a job in Odesk or in any other sites that offer freelancing jobs. And of course, never stop trying because there are still employers who are willing to employ your skills.

Hi ! Grab that chance now , who knows that would be the start for big offer to come. Personally , i really don't have patience in applying in Odesk . I can't understand their mechanics , seems many processes you have to undergo. I admire those people who works in this site , they got tons of patience and hardworking. Goodluck , more jobs for you.

Not only is it complicated, there's too much competition going on too! And yes, applying in Odesk really takes a lo t of patience and hardwork because you have to make sure that you're able to sell your skills in a manner where employers will hire you.

congratulations!
Your last sentence resonates with me. Two month ago I decided to quit because I felt I couldn't achieve my goal here, but my boss urged me to stay, and said something which gave me hope. So I decide to insist at least for a few months more. Now I'm working harder, hoping my effort will be rewarded in the near future.

Good for you that you have been hired. I had tried for years but could not land anything worthwhile. But if you are a freelancer writing articles than craiglist is the best. If you want I can send some articles because sometimes I cannot complete them due to lack of time. Do get back to me.

Congratulations!
Most often, people would give up when they are just a step away on being successful, so there is no way that they know about it. Giving up should be the last thing that we should consider if we want to gain success on anything that we started with.
Keep going and real success will be just right ahead of you.

Hi Aries1973!
Thanks so much for that kind words :) And yes, I have to agree with you. No matter what they say, I'm still happy to land my first contract when I thought I'm hopeless when it comes to online job hunting. Definitely giving up is NOT part of my vocabulary :)
Take care!

Congratulations on the first contract work! I hope it turns out well for you and may you have more contracts in the future. While there's life, there will always be hope. It may not turn out like how we want it to be, but something better will definitely be in store for us.
