I went to the land register office to rectify my tittle deed.I had only simple rectification to make.I went to the register office and submitted my application with all the necessary details. My application didn't move because I refused to give bribe but still I waited patiently and explained all details again and again.Even though it took me more time without paying bribe to get the title deed,I think that is what we all should do to defeat bribery and corruption.Do you think so?Be persistent with correct details and patiently wait, thus we can fight corruption.

I'm surprised they were so open about it, here people wait for bribes too but they don't ask, it is just understood that without one things will not go well or quickly.
We do not pay bribes and we probably suffer for it, but there is no proof that would stand up in court. Unfortunately it is people in power who bully others whot are to blame. You are right in saying we should fight it, but it seems to be almost a national indulgence in some countries.

A good point Hopefull90. i have never thought about a tip in this way. But after reading your comment, when I travel in my memory lanes, I actually feel that giving a tip does effect the behavior of the server. There is a restaurant that i vists very often and i always give a generous tip there. I always thought that I am giving the tip because there service quality is very good when it concerns me but now i feel that it is the other way around. The service quality is good because i give them the tip.

Would you call tips we leave as a sort of bribe. The server won't give us very good service if we don't tip and I have heard of them doing other despicable things.

i used to work as a medical sales representative, in charfe of not only promoting but also selling the products. it wasn't easy getting purchase orders from the government. i needed to give money to almost everyone who signed the papers (purchase orders and payment vouchers). this is very rampant in my country.
i remember one time i parked my car in a "no parking zone" accross a mall because i was waiting for a friend. a few seconds later a policeman approached me and asked for my license. he said he was going to give me a ticket, smiled and said maybe we could just talk about it. i said ok, give me the ticket. the next day i went to the city hall and paid it.
unfortunately corruption is everywhere. even the government employee who brings home a few sheets of paper and pens is guilty of this.

I think the main reason for corruption is that giving the bribe makes life easier for a person.
1 It saves a person's time as the person does not have to go through the hassles of the bureaucracy
2 Sometimes it saves money also. For eg. In case of a ticket, a person will probable give a bribe lesser in amount than the amount he would have to pay in case he would have got a ticket
If there are two paths in front of you, it is the human nature to choose the easier of the two and that is why it is very difficult to curb corruption because paying bribe is always going to be an easier way to solve a problem

You are right that when people lose their patience and want to get any work done in a hurry, they tend to shed money and do not mind giving bribe. Showing patience and resilience and not scumming to pressure could defeat corruption. It was good on your part that you got your job done without paying any bribe. Kudos to you on your achievement.

I think the extent of this problem varies from nation to nation. there are some nations where corruption has become a part of the system and howsoever hard you may try, your file won't move unless you bribe the person. And in such cases even lodging a complaint against such person can't work because the whole system is corrupt. I think the most important thing required to defeat corruption is a strong and corruption free judicial system so that the culprits can be punished for there crimes. Punishment is the only way to solve bribery. It is very difficult to stop bribery by individual efforts because if you don't give the bribe, there are hundreds of others who are ready to give the bribe and get there work done. I know that everybody will say that those hundreds should also stop giving the bribes, but in my opinion, such a feat is next to impossible because, practically speaking, you can change the mind of 10 people, maybe 100 people but you can't change the whole society. The only solution that i think can work is to generate fear in the hearts of corrupt people so that they think twice before asking for bribe
