Annoying telemarketer calls

We just recently signed up with cable because it was the only way to get internet access at our new address. To get the best deal we went ahead and bundled television, internet and home phone service. We didn't really need the phone service because we all have cell phones that we use on a daily basis. We hadn't had our phone hooked up for a whole day before we started getting those annoying telemarketer calls. We hadn't given this number out to anyone but the people who called said they got the number from an online request from us for information. None of us had made any such request. Of course they were all asking for my son in law who was the one who had signed up for the service. He took the first call. The phone is hooked up by my bed but I thought it was the cable company calling to verify the service was working. After all they were the only ones who had the number. My son in law had the worst time getting off the phone. After that I started taking the calls myself. I told them in no uncertain terms that we did not ask for nor want their information. I called them on the lie they was telling about getting our number from a request from us. After a few days these calls finally quit coming in. I know these companies buy mailing lists from other companies we do business with but I never thought they could get the information so quickly.

Know how I stopped those? First I have an answering machine that I let pick up calls and I can screen them. If the call is an automated solicitor call, meaning, the call is randomly called by a machine, and if a real person answers on your end, a real person will pick it up on their end to talk to you. If the answer machine picks it up...the solicitor automated call hangs up. And if I do pick it up for a call...they ask for someone, person of the house etc...and I say "okay, let me get them"...and then lay the phone down on the table and then just go back to what I was doing. They hang up after awhile and seldom do they call back!

If you were calling someone who never answered their phone would you keep calling them forever? Even telemarketers get tired of calling numbers that are never answered.

I really hate those machine dialed calls. There is always a delay from when I say hello to when the actual person comes on the line. Then of course they didn't actually hear my hello so they want to start the greet portion all over again. I've got to the point that if you don't immediately start talking to me as soon as I pick up the phone I hang it right back up. I like your last suggestion. I am going to try that on the next telemarketer call I get. That will be a hoot.

very good idea there. But if you do not talk to them. Dont they keep calling you up?

I have a feeling that they just dial numbers willy nilly, or go through a phone book and do all the numbers in the area. But if it is long distance, I do not know how they do it. Anyway it would be best, if you have not done already, to get caller id. Ours is included in our bundled Shaw program, but some may not have it and it might cost a little bit more. Also subscribe to the do not call list. I have been getting these long distance telemarketing calls and just let the phone ring.

The trouble is that lots of these telemarketing calls come from another country or they hire those new Canadians or new Americans who are not good at English and they do not understand when we say no, they mean no. That is why unless I know the number or it is local I will not answer it. And they should really know if the company they work for that you requested the call or not.

After a few days of fielding these calls and telling them to take us off their list and pointing out to them that they are lying when they said we requested the information the calls have stopped. I have nothing against someone trying to make a living but I do take offense when they say it was because I had asked for them to call when I had not.

SOme companies use computers to dial for them. So they can dial more and more numbers.

I have heard that the government even sold the "Do Not Call" lists. You know that what happened with you had to be because the cable company sold their list. They may even have a standing agreement with the company that was calling you.

Secret software maybe? Savak I do not remember if you mentioned, but this is a new number for you, correct? Who ever had the number before you guys may have signed up for a bunch of stuff, or may still be giving out the number to keep from giving out their own.

I don't doubt that at all. But if you think about it they had to make the do not call list available, otherwise how would the companies know not to call those numbers. I think that some of those companies just use that list to make calls anyway in hopes that someone at the end of that line will be interested in what they are selling. I know that the cable company would sell the list but the technician had only been gone from our house for a few minutes before the calls started coming in. How in the world did they get our number so quickly?

I used to get those kind of calls ALL THE TIME Savak until I put both, my home and cell numbers on the DO NOT CALL list (donotcall.gov) and it cut down the amount of calls tremendously! It works great for companies that use their list but unfortunately not every company uses it. You will just have to ask them not to contact you anymore and they are supposed to comply by law. Also, companies that you currently do business with you can still call you unless they are also told not to contact you. Cheers, Stan

When I get these calls on my cell phone I just add them to my contact list under telemarketer. Then the next time they call I just ignore them. You can get these companies to take your name off their calling list without being on the do not call list. All you have to do is insist that they not contact you ever again. Since you have to do the same thing even if you are on the do not call list I see no reason to be on another list.

I block them on my cell to savak03. but what I have found..if they really want to find that person, they either, change THEIR calling number (TONS of different numbers since there is no "long distance" calling charges anymore) and the calls will stop for awhile and then they all pick up again. I currenly have calls for the people that had my phone number before me...April had my cell number and Alexandria had my home phone. I tell them to stop calling, I hang up and I block them. All is quiet for a about 2-3 months, they they start up again! I look and that new number calling is not on my cell block list. So I am sure they just either get a new calling number or give the list to some other company. I think these are creditors calling for April and ALexandria, but I will get the same seanerio for an Oscar something...he is the kid as they are trying to contact the parent..something about his school or not being in school that day...I have even gotten texts about Oscar missing school that day! Those I will talk to as I figure it is about a kid..could be important...but I tell them wrong number and they say ok they will change it, and for a few months, no calls. Then suddenly they start again. This one I can't figure out..but the others.. I am sure they are just changing numbers or selling the list. Only sure way to stop at least the annoyance...I just let the answer machine pick them up or block on the cell..but still.. I get them for these people as a few other ones that are constant...Cable TV, home improvements, etc. I even had one that was a recording and it started out saying "Please don't hang up! This is an important call"...I guess expecting someone to not hang up fast and listen so they can maybe catch you....and I have listened, and it is always something stupid for sale or lower my mortgage interest or something like that!

We have had cable for years now. But when we first got our package we started getting called for this woman(can't remember her name)but she had creditors calling her day and night. And they wouldn't believe that I wasn't her. It was terrible. I had given our new number to doctors and dentists and so forth so I really didn't want to change the number due to this but I finally had to. You were probably having the same thing happen to you. Who ever had had the number before you had filled out something online at some point and got this going then disconnected the phone. Remember, your number could have belonged to someone else previously. And the cable company may sell their numbers to companies too. As soon as your phone is activated it must send some info to these companies. What I do is utilize the caller ID. If it isn't someone I know I don't answer it. I figure they can leave a message if it is that important. And I have the phone up in my room with the ringer off. The one downstairs is on. So that is how I stay sane.

That's too bad. Could solve your problems to have the caller ID.

I have had that happen to me too. But this time these people were asking specifically for my son in law by name so I know they weren't calling a previous owner of that telephone number. I haven't bothered to get a handset that has caller id on it because we rarely use the phone anyway. We all have cell phones that we use.

I do get these type of calls as well, but mostly on my mobile and it always has something to do with taking up their insurance policy and things like that. I very seldom get them on my landlines. Maybe they did call, but who knows, I'm always out during day time. I'm sure you will be able to think up of an excuse to reject them. They will give up calling you eventually.

They have stopped calling on the landline. I guess I got through to all of them. On my cell phone whenever I get a telemarketer call I just add them to my my contact list. That way I can ignore them the next time they call.

My experience on getting rid of them: if they tell me that they are from so and so insurance company and they have a promotion going on, I always tell them that I am also an insurance agent. Always work for me.

I know how you feel but on the other side, I have had telemarketer jobs. Usually for fundraising or home improvement appointment setting. First get on the National Do Not Call registry.... then if they do call what you need to say to them is this line, "Please take this phone number off of your calling list" Don't hang up yet, ask "are you taking it off right now with your computer?" then after they say yes, then hang up. If they call you again after that, tell them that you were lied to before and basically, they are now breaking the law because you requested to be removed, just make a stink about it to them. Most companies and places find loopholes with the National Do Not Call registry, so that's why you need to still do all of that :(

I commend you for your courage. That is one job I would never be able to do. I realize that telemarketers get a lot of abuse from the people they call. I would be in tears all the time if I tried to do that job. You can get these companies to take your name off their calling list without being on the do not call list. All you have to do is insist that they not contact you ever again. Since you have to do the same thing even if you are on the do not call list I see no reason to be on another list.

If you're going to be using that telephone, you need to get a caller ID. If you're not going to be using that telephone, why don't you just unplug it.

When I receive these telemarketer calls what I do is simply say "Thank you for calling but I'm not interested" and then I hang up. I don't wait for them to say another word because thats when they will keep going on and on with their pitch. Now with call waiting if I don't recogize the number or if its a 800 or 866 number I just don't bother picking up.

That is what I do on my cell phone but this house phone is just a cheap model that doesn't have caller id. I was just blown away at how quickly the calls started and how many lies they were telling. I used the experience to vent a lot of my frustrations.

Most companies will sell a list of their customers to generate extra income. Even your bank sells a list of their depositors. There is big money to be made in compiling these lists for sale.

Yes these calls have been very annoying in my life of recent, they have even got me out of bed in the middle of the night, getting up because I thought it may be a important call,I tried to be polite for a long time but have now took to being rude and it now seems to be stopping a little.

I don't know what you call the middle of the night but there is a law that they are not allowed to call after a certain hour. I'm not sure but I think the line is drawn at ten PM. I, too, hate to be rude but it seems like rudeness is the only thing they understand.
14 Apr 13
that's not impossible now a days, all information today can easily be accessible to anybody and almost no secrecy to any information you'd like to know. Fast spreading of communication is in our era that's why for mostly like what you experience is no way we get out from these telemarketer calls except to show them and send them the message that we are annoyed from what they're doing

You are so right. It's just sad that we have to resort to behavior that is in poor taste and that we would ordinarily not use to get our message accepted by these people. We are taught as children to be nice to others and never to be rude but rudeness is the only language telemarketers understand.
