Do you drive with your pet on your lap?

Well it could get you ticketed! This Boston man was pulled over and ticketed for driving with his dog on his lap! See the video here from NBC news: http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nbc-news/51505743/#51505743 What do you think? Was it fair that he got ticketed? I think having an animal in your lap can cause safety concerns. It could be distracting, get in your way, obstruct your view or your ability to steer the wheel. Not to mention the animal would be severely injured in an accident. The safest place for a traveling pet would definitely be the back seat as there is less chance of it being injured in a crash. Where does your pet ride in the car?

$35 fine?! That's all?! Ignorance of the law is no excuse, but obviously, this guy has no common sense either.

True.. And it says he's going to fight the ticket.

You're so funny! But you're so right too. Sure, maybe he didn't know there was a law.. I honestly didn't. But common sense says that's not a safe place for a pet... but nobody seems to have common sense anymore these days!

I know. That just proves what a dumber a$$ he is. I would be embarrassed if I appeared on the TV news spouting about "I didn't know there was a law. Everyone does it". That's like saying, "Everyone jumps off the bridge, so I do too." What a be-bop!

No, because it is against the law. When we did have a dog she was satisfied sitting in the passenger seat or back seat. Now we have cats and they don't go outdoors. When we need to take them out to the vet they travel in a pet carrier.

I don't currently have any pets but when I did I never let them on my lap while I was driving. I had a chihuahua briefly and one car trip I tried letting her on my lap but it was really hard to drive with her there so I had to put her back on the passenger seat. I think it was fair that he was ticketed. It is dangerous because it is a distraction and the pet could hit your arm and make you swerve or if the pet starts to fall you might swerve trying to catch it instead of watching the road.

Yes, exactly, it is a major safety hazard.

If I was the Dog being used as his airbag,I'd want him ticketed too...

When I remember back to driver's training classes (WAY back when! LOL) we were told that anything that distracts you from your ability to keep your eyes on the road, is a possible ticket such as: adjusting your radio, something hanging from your rear-view mirror, leaning down to pick something up off the floor, music that is too loud, etc. I think that a dog on your lap can be quite a distraction, not to mention the fact that it (the dog) would be crushed between YOU and the steering wheel in a head on collision. Might save you, but "so long, puppy"...... I've always wondered why more people are not ticketed for this....

Yes, might save you.. but personally I wouldn't be able to live with myself if my dog were killed literally right in front of my eyes. They should be ticketed.. not just for their safety and the safety of others on the road, but for the poor animals too!

I agree! I also see so many of those little dogs hanging out the driver's side window. One sharp corner and...... eek!

I don't have dogs right now.. but when I had one I was always worried about it seeing a cat or squirrel or something and just jumping out the open window! Even on really hot days I'd only have the window down far enough for the dog to stick it's face out, but not enough for him to get his body out. Driving with the dog was nerve racking for me! Now all I have are cats and they're only ever in the car when we go to the vet, and they're in a carrier. I think if we ever get another dog I might get a crate for it for riding in the car, just for safety and to keep me focused on the road not the dog!

Hi Katsmeow1213! I don't have a pet but I have a friend who always travel with their dog. The dog even ride the motorcycle! They carry the dog on the lap when they ride the car and put the dog in between the driver's legs when they ride the motorcycle. I do agree with ticketing it and as well the safety reasons for the ticket. There are other ways and right places for pet to travel. Some pets even have protective gears when they riding bikes or motorbikes. The first thing we need to secure is the pet's and our's safety. We must learn to treat them as their are and give them proper care and treatment, not treating them as humans. As Cesar Milan's philosophy, dogs don't understand kissing and hugging but they know if you have a calm state of mind. Have a great day! :)

OMG! I'm sorry, but I think your friend is an idiot!! What happens if the dog jumps off the bike when it's going fast and there's other traffic? Regardless of reflexes, nobody can stop something heavy that's moving at 50 MPH that fast.. Why would he do such a thing and put the dog's life in jeopardy?

Yeah! I witnessed one time they tried to take the dog for ride. When the dog was properly positioned, my friend started to move the motorcycle. Suddenly the dog jumped out of the bike! I screamed because I thought the dog might get killed! Luckily my friend has quick reflexes and was able to stop before the dog get dragged or be hit. (phew!)

I have got safety harnesses for my two miniature poodles. I keep them collar on and just connect them with the safety harness. This is a very short lead put to the seat belt in the middle of the back seat of my car. If they were left loose in an accident they could go through the front window in a crash or cause an accident by jumping in my view. For a safety reasons dogs should be secure in a car like on a seat belt or in a cage.

He used to ride in the back seat with his head sticking out the drivers window when the weather was nice....I have a friend who puts her dog in the car and in a seat belt!!! Says it's the safest place for him and he just sits there like that is what he is supposed to do!

My cats ride in carriers, so not an issue. The dog rode in the back, and was way too big to sit on my lap. I did once, silly me, drive to the vet while carrying a kitten. The kitten was freaked out, and I ended up with a sweater with claw marks.

Of course he should have been ticketed. What an idiot! It would only take the dog to take an interest in something outside the car and move and the guy could lose attention or even control. My dogs are pretty unsafe in the car because they have no respect for the driver if they see another dog and will climb on the driver's head, quite literally, to bark out the window more effectively. Needless to say, they rarely go in the car and if they do only if there's a passenger to control them. I would never drive with them all in the car.

Yes they can be distracting. This one looked like a small dog.. but still it's a distraction and it's not safe! If we ever get another dog I will buy a crate to put in the car when the dog needs to ride anywhere with us.

When we had dogs then I would sometimes have a dog on my lap when we were on a trip to the vet. But this was in the days out here when there was no seat belt law and not much traffic. I did do it but I would be in the passenger seat and my husband would be driving. This would not be allowed out here now as it is a safety concern

I have had cats on my lap in the passenger seat.. but only a couple times. Generally they are in a carrier in the back seat.

Well, i have neither a pet nor a car at the moment.. Although i do think what the police did was air.. since however small the pet may be, it is unpredictable.. It could definitely be a distraction if it moves fast or something...

I thin what the police did is definitely right.. since why would anyone place their per on their lap? it is definitely dangerous! The pet should be placed somewhere it could not bother the driver.. since driving requires full attention.

We have 2 chihuahuas. They go with us sometimes and they generally ride on our laps. If we dont have our kids with us they like to ride in their car seats. Kinda funny the seats have dual purposes lol. I have actually been pulled over because our one chihuahua used to like to lay in the back windshield. I didnt get a ticket but he did warn me that it was very dangerous. I dont think they should get a ticket for it. It is their dog and they are responsible for it.

I used to but don't any more. Haven't done it in years and years because it IS dangerous. Animals don't know danger and the like so we humans have to make ourselves and our pets safe as we can and that means the back seat while I'm driving! Sorry doggies! It's the way it's gonna be from now on! But hey, they have windows in the back to look out of all they want to.
