Adoption Is The Best

I recently went to the humane society, It was just to look and I had no intentions of adopting that day. But I walked into the cat room and in the very back staring out at me was a golden purebred Persian. he's 7 years old and has cataracts in one eye. We bonded instantly! I of course brought him home and he has been my shadow ever since. My boyfriends calls him my mini me. So many animals are put into a shelter hoping to find a loving home. And when they do they are so grateful and loving. I've had cats all my life but Shaggy is unique, he has a personality all his own. Have alot of you gotten your cats through adoption? I'd love to hear your stories.

Hi kittenclaus, What a wonderful, heartwarming experience. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am so sure that Shaggy adores you, and you him. What's special about this is that the kitty was already a few years old. There are so many times where people go to the shelter to adopt a kitten or a puppy. They don't seem to consider the older critters that also need a good home. Good for you. You're very sweet. As far as my experience goes with pets, my husband and I have 12 cats. He adopted one from the shelter but the other 11 were all strays from the apartment where I used to live. I would have had more but some of the kitties were so free spirited that I could not contain them when it was time to move last summer. I bought a utility shed that my husband and I, with the help of a few contractors converted into a really nice cabin. It's in out back yard a few feet away from the house. I also bought an enclosure with a tarp roof. The enclosure butts up to the cabin. 7 of my kitties live in this cabin/enclosure. They absolutely love it. 4 other kitties live inside our home. The other one loves it outside, so she is outside during the day but comes into the screen room at night. Everyone has been spayed or neutered, so that we have some control of the population. They are such a delight. I love all my babies so much. My husband loves them too. So, in answer to your question - Did I get my cats through adoption? I'd have to say yes, in a sense. My cats adopted me, and with my soft heart, there was no way of saying no.

Yes, I love having a multi-cat home. It's so cute the way they interact - never the same show twice. Sometimes one pet can equal more than one. It's a good thing for Shaggs you came along. Our local Humane Society is a no kill shelter. They have a beautiful facility. I don't feel as bad for coming out of there without taking home a new pet because I know that none of them will be put to sleep. But all the same, I would love to take every one of them.

What a wonderful story, I wish I could have more babies but Steve keeps saying Shaggs makes up for 10. You're right about adopting older cats, they need love too and if I'd not adopted Shaggy when I did they were set to put him down in 2 days.

I've never purchased an animal at a pet store and always go to shelters because there are so many needy animals that need wonderful, forever homes. The two cats I have now I got from a lady who was going to have them put down because her husband was having allergic problems all of a sudden. Your new mini you sounds adorable and I'm happy you have given her a home. Good luck with her.

Our last 2 cats came from our local animal shelter. Before that, our cats came from friends or neighbors. One was thrust upon us at a very inconvenient time. For some reason, a co-worker asked us to take care of his female cat. Within a very short time, our home was flooded and we had to quickly find temporary quarters until a new home could be set up. The most convenient place we could find was a one bedroom apartment. My husband's adult daughter was living with us at the time. That made 3 adults, a 12 year old boy, a 9 year old girl, a dog and 6 cats in a one bedroom apartment for 6 weeks. You see, our friend's cat had given birth to 5 kittens. A few weeks after we got into a new, dry house, our friend took back the mama cat, and we gave away all the kittens but one, which our children named "Square Face".

Every pet that my husband and I have gotten have been rescued in one way or the other. Our first Pit Bull we adopted from an animal shelter. The second one we got was rescued from a family that wasn't taking care of her properly. If we hadn't adopted her, she would have been one mean dog. Our cat came from an animal shelter, and both the dogs we have now were adopted from different shelters. You are right about how many animals are in shelters that are waiting for good homes. Good for you that you took one.

that is great! i am so glad you helped brin one animal off the streets. there is a nice humane socity in our local pet store and every weekend i try and take a peek ... just to see. Last week I saw a really pretty collie and a beautiful kitten. Too bad i already have enough pets at home. I am glad the animals go quickly and that people are adopting more at rescue centers.

Mine are all rescues, but mostly I've done the rescuing. Oliver was a week old kitten when we got him. Rygel was one of 4 kittens and the mother that the people were "tired of." The "3 E's" are actually 3 feral kittens I trapped beside my house with their mother. Mom was placed at a horse barn, but the "3 E's" are still here and all grown up, fixed and safe, not friendly, but safe.

I wish more people would adopt a cat or even a dog from the humane society! So many animals are looking for and need a home! If I could have a pet were I live I would go and adopt a cat or maybe a dog! I would rather do that then buy a purebreed! I love hearing stories like yours! Adoption is best!

Here they make it very difficult to get a pet from a shelter. They have you fill out an application, they have to do a home visit and they charge $150 for each pet! It is a long and tedious process. That is why I don't adopt from the shelters here, there are a lot of pets online that need adopting as well.
