Staying With Family, Or Staying In A Hotel?

My husband and I have been doing a lot of traveling around Canada for various reasons. Sometimes we go for a specific event, sometimes just to see a new place, and sometimes to visit family.
Even if we are going to see family, we prefer to stay in a hotel. We love seeing everyone, and spending lots of time together. However, we also like to have our own space at the end of the day. We stick to the same hotel chain in Cabada (won't mention here because I don't want to be caught advertising) and we've been fortunate enough to find locations in every city we've wanted to visit. For our loyalty, we've gotten a ton of points and benefits! ;)
So, do you stay with family, or visit family, but stay in a hotel?

If there is hotel readily available nearby, I would rather put up in the hotel if I am with my family . It will more convenient and we could have our liberty in doing whatever we like without any restriction !

We stay at a Days Inn every time we travel. Two years ago though, I did stay with my brother and had a wonderful time with him and his girlfriend.

I love to stay with a friend or stay in a cheap guest house. A triple room on the ground floor is best for us. We found it almost impossible to find anywhere to stay in Victoria on Vancouver Island. In the end we were taken to a motel on the outskirts. They gave us a room on the ground floor so that was fantastic. We stayed a few nights with relatives on an island. It was wonderful and they kept us busy socially in the evening.

While my father was still alive, my boyfriend and I did go visit my parents once for a few days. Since the budget was tight and pet-friendly hotels really aren't available out in that area, we stayed over at their place.
During that stay, my parents allowed my late dog to get skunked--and left me to deal with it. My mother also objected to my boyfriend and I sharing a room--despite the fact that I'm well into adulthood and we were living together; I, of course, basically told her to stuff it.
Personally, my preference would be a hotel. It would always be a hotel. Not having to hear someone's loud, obnoxious radio blasting early in the morning... not having someone trying to feed us heavily processed rubbish... not having someone making snide comments about my clothing, hair, makeup, etc... Oh, yeah... definitely a hotel.

I would rather visit the family but stay in hotel. I mean family is family but I wouldn't want to keep crashing with them. I would only be a burden to them. They would always have to entertain me because I'm supposed to be the guest. Also, it's much more convenient for me to stay in a hotel since I can manage my time the way I want. I get to do more of the things I want. :)

It depends. While I meet my parents, we won't stay in a hotel. If we visit other relatives, we will stay in the hotel.

No, we stay with family. Part of the point is to be able to do stuff at all hours of the day and night. It is good that you can get loyalty rewards where you stay, and being with your family may be different than being with my family.

I think its easier to stay at a hotel, as you do get your space at the end of the day. Its not always easy to find a place to stay, so there are times we end up staying with relatives. This can be good in a larger house, but anytime your visiting relatives that have never had children it can be very tiring. I know one of my relatives would walk behind my daughter wiping down anything she touched. It really bothered me and I didn't want to visit the relative.
Children should be allowed to be able to have fun and get dirty. Its not easy seeing our daughter sit there in a pretty dress being bored and wanting to go home. I know that some girls don't mind sitting looking pretty all day, but that wasn't my daughter.

It would really depend on the family member if we'd stay with them or get a hotel. For an example, we may stay with one of my brothers but not the other only because of feelings of 'not fitting in' and the same goes with my husband. His two brothers and one sister there's no way I'd stay overnight with any of them but his one other sister, yes I would stay with her and be comfortable. Now these family members may be offended but that's how it is. I've been cut to ribbons a number of times during our almost 22 years of marriage and I'm just not going to put myself out there anymore. I'll be civil but that's about it.

hi danishcanadian.
i have always preferred to stay at a hotel myself but sometimes the offer to stay at a relative's house is too much enticing to say 'no' to. i also consider the money that i'll be able to save when i do decide to stay at a relative's place instead of getting a hotel. for sure each has its own advantage and disadvantages so i guess it would really depend on what one's itinerary is during the vacation trip.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

If its just me traveling alone I stay with family. If I'm traveling with my husband or with other family members we stay at a hotel. My husband and I are like you guys we like to unwind in peace and not be in the way of family members. There is nothing better then going to a hotel after a long day and just relaxing wearing whatever is comfortable for us. When you are at someones house you have to make sure you are dresses proper which can be uncomfortable.

Yeah I agree, when I go anywhere I would want to stay in a hotel. I would want our own space and not have to be on anyone's schedule.

Usually we stay with family. It's not my preference of course, but I can't afford a hotel. And honestly, a lot of the family we would visit would be insulted if we chose to stay in a hotel rather than at their home. I'm the opposite. If family (besides my parents) wants to stay with me I'd much prefer them to go to a hotel than stay with me.

I have always preferred staying in a hotel. The reason i prefer hotel , is , one privacy, two, feeling in control, three, not giving my family a hard time and fourth, just being able to do what you want. People have different opinions about this, but at the end of the day, it all comes to how you are with your family.
