USB device removal notification not appearing on taskbar

Since last few days, I noticed that USB device notification icon is not appear on taskbar. So I can't utilize "Safely Remove your Device" option. Doing so, I fear loss of data......specially for my External HD. I don't understand why suddenly the icon is not appearing. Plz help me to get the problem solved
