My views on ADHD totally changed when my daighter was diagnosed at the age of 8. She had no real attention span and was very flighty. She seem to slip under the radar at school because she was bright. The teachers didn't want to bring too much to our attention because she was doing well at school, but I knew she wasn't 'right' and she could do so much better. I know this sounds a bit round about but it was a rough few years of going to doctors, counselors, psychologists etc before we knew that it wasn't our fault and bad parenting etc. My daughter is now on medication (which was trial and error for a few years) and is now excelling at school to the point where she has done some testing for gifted children! We have some days 'off medication' but she really needs them to concentrate at school and we will review it all down the track. It is a difficult thing for every one to live with...

thank you so much for sharing. i know they really do slip under the radar because they are actually smart kids. it also as rracers states hard not to blame oursleves. but it really is a condition and it is not bad parenting. all we need to do is take care of our kids and help them as much as we can.

I do believe there is a condition called adhd but I also believe there are a lot of parents that through not disciplining their children, their children have become very naughty.
I hate being at the shops and a child is throwing a tantrum the mother just ignores the child hoping they will stop.

yes that is true, i believe that one hundred percent. i also dont think its right for moms or even dads to just igonre them when they are doing that. i take the kids if mine did that and just leave the store. and take care of it outside. you know what i mean, sometimes they need to be taken out of the situation because they just want to get a rise out of the parents.

my childs issues were not that she wasn't discplined or that she was naughty her issues were that she couldnt pay attention in school long enough and was very impulsive about how she handled things.

My son has autism and ADHD, I believe it is part of the autistic spectrum and is a nasty problem in it's own right.
People like his old teacher who insisted it was just a parental control issue should try being their parent.
My son has a few seconds attention span and has to be constantly be reminded to keep on task, of course he has other problems caused by the autism but he's in "ordinary" school and recieves little help.
Some people have little idea how difficult controlling our little ones can be and deny their needs because they do not understand, even children without special needs canbe a handful.
I was once told that as his mother you know if something is wrong and don't need other people who don't know your little one making any judgements.

it really is hard. i wish more people understood how hard it is. i think that we all do as much as we can to make them understand. because they are smart kids and no one should make judgments like you said.

It's absolutely a real condition, the problem is that so many parents and doctors alike diagnose this too quickly. I have a cousin who has lived with my family since he was four (he's 11 now) and he has ADHD. Some people who have ADHD can deal with it just fine with no medication or very little medication. My cousin needs medication. I know that this is a legitimate health concern because the difference in him is very blatant when he is on the medication and when it wears off around 7pm every night. It's a delicate matter that shouldnt be taken lightly and medication should never be used as a quick fix.

I have two boys with ADHD and on medication. One of my other boys could also be diagnosed as ADHD, but does not take madication.
I think doctors and teachers are too quick to get the child diagnosed ADHD. If a child is too loud or wiggle too much, hey..they must be ADHD, right?
I think a parent knows their child best. And if you feel your child may have this problem, read up on it and educate yourself. Only then with you know and can seek help.
ADHD is a real condition...but too many are too quick to diagnose.

true alot are too quick to diagnose. i dont think that is right, because that only gives it a bad rap, when it really is a condition that needs to be treated correctly for children and adults that have it.

My son has adhd and i have to say that he was diagnosed about 5 years ago. he is a very hyper little boy with very little concration span, he will get really angry and he has so much strengh, he will sometimes sits on the stairs and bang his head on the wall over and over again, there is nothing that i can do to stop him but apart from trying to protect his head and wait for him to stop.
He is on medication and this does help. He has to take his medication daily and if he forgets his tablet oh boy do i know about it,
I also have to add that i also had adhd when i was a child and i am now in my 30's. I dont think that you complety grow out of it but you do learn to know where your problem areas are and you just do your best to avoid them, The good thing is that when you get older it does get easier to manage and you than dont need to take the medication as you can control it yourself.

ADHD is a disorder that has been documented and is treatable.
Here is some information on the causes of ADHD as per the Mayo Clinic.
Parents often blame themselves when a child has been diagnosed with ADHD, but scientists increasingly believe that structural changes in the brain, not parenting, may be a leading cause of the disorder.
Scientists once thought that a chemical imbalance was involved in many cases of ADHD because adults and children diagnosed with ADHD appear to have low levels of dopamine (dopa decarboxylase), a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain involved in attention, movement and motivation.
But brain scans of children with ADHD also show changes in the neural pathways along which these messages move. It's possible that this may interfere with communication between the parts of the brain that regulate attention, planning, impulsive behavior and motor control — all areas of difficulty for people with ADHD.
Just because it is not fully understood doesn't mean it isn't real.
Although I do believe the diagnoses is over used by physicians at the urging of teachers and schools.

I have a 13 year old daughter that has ADHD it is a real condition and it upsets me that alot of people misunderstand what is all about and think that all the kids need is a good spanking or time out and it would all go away which is not true by any means. It takes alot of patience, resources and education and yes sometimes meds to get,it under control.

I have twins with ADHD. The oldest was put in special classes. The youngest had accomodations. What a fun time I had. The older one felt like he was stupid. Both were the opposite of stupid. The teachers didn't know how to deal with ADHD. Both dropped out of school at the end of 10th grade.

It is worst disorder to get, i personally feel. If an adult gets ADD, that is even worse. You will have difficulty concentrating at work and finishing the tasks on time, etc. I guess I am also suffering from ADD, will need to check out with my doc soon, else it would overwhelm oneself.

Good i am glad he is doing well my daughter is on Ritalyn. Now if we could just get society to realize that this is a true medical condition and not bad parenting we may have won the battle.
