Bicycle Workers...

I never realized what a tough and rough job it is to deliver food on a bike and mail/packages like messengers do especially in a big city. I have to give "Bike - Messengers" and "Bike - Food Delivery People" a big thumbs up for the hard work they do. I do not think these hard working men and women get the recognition they deserve.

In some countries, that's the only way to make deliveries. Hong Kong, Singapore, Viet Nam.... I seen pictures where the people are just loaded down with stuff on their bikes. Looks like it would be hard to even peddle!

Very true, I also have seen pictures where their bikes are so loaded that I don't know how they can even move.

@ACETY5 the delivery people here could never use a bike like that, they need a basket to hold the food they are delivering. Ha ha

It's not something I could do, or would even attempt to do. Not only due to the fact that I would be all wobbly during the ride, but would have to deal with the weather conditions too. Those that do it, kudos to them.

Yep, it takes a special kind of person to do that kind of work.

Agree with you that not everyone can do the job well.

I have never lived any place where a delivery was made by bike but I can see what you are saying. It is not only dangerous but would be hard contending with the traffic. They certainly do not get enough recognition.

Here in NYC there are so many bikers working I don't know how they make it through all the dangerous traffic. I am sure in a rural setting they make their deliveries by car. It's a very hard job.

Their work can also be dangerous. I know a local lawyer from my area was just biking in NY while visiting out there, when he was hit and badly injured. A lot of people forget to give credit to the people that are in the great jobs but do work that a lot of people wouldn't or couldn't.

Yes, so true. I couldn't or wouldn't do that type of work. Did the attorney you know fully recover from that accident?

@howard96h For the most part. He still uses a cane from time to time but over all he is better.

So true! I imagine it is a lot of hard work - it could be physically demanding and a balancing act for sure. Out here, I rarely see anyone riding their bikes on business - it would be quite hazardous as our traffic conditions are pretty bad. However they are putting up special bike lanes everywhere, so perhaps that will change! It would save gas and money spent on maintaining a vehicle.

@much2say The traffic here doesn't care about bike lanes, besides taxi's and peoples cars the buses and trucks are way too big to get hit by.

Most of the jobs don't get the recognition they deserve. People take them for granted until they get in their shoes. Then, they start appreciating them, but if they get out from there, will forget what they experienced.

This is probably very common in New York! And I agree, props to them as it wouldn't be easy balancing food while making delivery, etc. I don't see any delivers here in California made by bike.

Oh no, out in California I am sure everything is done by car - most States I am sure is like that. NYC is crazy to have a car, way too much congestion and too expensive to park. Public transportation is the way to go and a bike for deliveries.

They do have it hard. They have to travel through all the New York traffic and get to their destination unharmed. I know from experience, here in Brooklyn, certain parts anyway, people just don't care when they are driving. They would sooner hit you than stop. So, I will give these bike workers a big thumbs up as well.

I feel sorry for people who do this kind of work especially in a big city where there is crazy traffic. Mexico City must have a lot of busy traffic also, it is a big city correct?

@howard96h yes, it is. There are accidents all the time. I read that there are over a thousand car accidents everyday here, which accounts for nearly 17% of all the car accidents in the whole country

It takes a lot of balance. I don't live in a city so don't see bike messengers up close and personal. But from what I've seen in movies and on TV, they also have pretty strict schedules. And you have to not hit anyone where there are big crowds. I would think it's fairly stressful no matter what impression of freedom it may give.

Your right, they do have a schedule and are always rushing to get where they have to go which just adds to the stress like you said.

Consider all the hard work that they go through plus the dangers involved in their work, they deserve the credit and pat in the back that goes their way.
