Here I am, after the squilllion years of work, I'm 57, returning to school! Not as a teacher but as a student. I'm doing a postgraduate qualification that will take two years part time. At a time in my life when most people are looking forward to retirement, I am about to embark on 24 months of study and frankly I'm anticipating it with a mix of pleasure and dread. Will I be up to study, let alone writing essays etc. It's all quite scary. One thing I'm sure of, I bet there's someone even older than me on the course!

I had just the same feelings when I started a Computer Studies course when I was 48. Two (or was it three?) years later I graduated with an HND. I can't say that I was a brilliant student and academic work certainly didn't come easily after a break of 30 years but I did graduate and I thoroughly enjoyed it (mostly). I also found it a lot easier than I thought it would be to mix with people so much younger than me.

I wouldn't dare do that here. It would probably put me $60,000 in debt...

HA HA HA!
Not in my town you're not Pikey :D Come over at University Campus Suffolk where you would be just a late bloomer, but not an old one ! One of my student work collegues, a fellow library assistant is a 3rd year part time English Student, but we have seen students with white hair and many rinkles which we safely assumed are over 65 !. I have seen plenty pensioneers as well among fellow students, so I don't think you are old at all by these standards. The average student here is about 28, with the under 21 being under 50% of the total student body.
Hope this has cheered you up !

I feel old at almost 30 wanting to go for my BA. But when I was going for my AA, I saw plenty of older people in my classes, so it's not taboo.
